I once was in Hawaii, more precisely on the Oahu island. I spent some time in Waikiki, Honolulu and Makaha. During this time, I spent an evening attending a Luau. It's a traditional Hawaiian party, blessing or celebration, where there is usually Hawaiin music (mele), a feast and entertainment.
The Luau attended by tourists today is different than their origins. They used to be religious ceremonies.
The Feast
In the feast, you will find the most popular Hawaiian dishes. Such as Poi, which is a purred taro root. That is eaten with everything. Just use it as a sauce. For the meat, you have the Kalua Pig. It is cooked in an underground oven called the imu and afterward shredded like pulled pork. Or other types of meats wrapped in taro leaves and steamed are called LauLau. Finally, you can enjoy the Haupia, a coconut pudding for dessert.
Hula Dancers
Did you know that hula dancers are male and female? And they traditionally wear a grass skirt or a leaf skirt. They wear a flower necklace called Lei. So you can get Lei'd in Hawaii 😉 And of course, a flower in their hair.
