After becoming a sexologist, I realized one thing: everything I once thought about โmale sexualityโ is not an experience, but a set of other peopleโs expectations, media images, and myths.
Real understanding came later. Sometimes โ at appointments. Sometimes โ through a personal crisis. And sometimes โ thanks to books and films that gave me goosebumps.
Iโm sharing what changed my view and, perhaps, will help you too.
๐ 1. โThe Man Who Was Raised by His Motherโ โ Eli Lieberman
About the inner boy who was taught โto be strong,โ but forgot to explain how to be alive.
This book helped me rethink why many men find it difficult to talk about feelings, admit fears, ask for support.
Sexuality is not only about the body. Itโs about contact with yourself.
And when you are not in harmony with yourself, you cannot be truly close to anyone.
๐ฌ 2. The film "American Beauty" (1999)
Not about sex. About an attempt to regain a sense of life.
Kevin Spacey's character goes into crisis, loses everything - but gains the main thing: the desire to feel.
Male sexuality is shown here not as a conquest of someone, but as a return to oneself.
Very accurate, very real. And a little painful.
๐ 3. "Male Sexuality" - Brian Tracy (yes, that one)
Sounds like pop psychology, but it has something important:
a man is not a set of functions, but a whole system of emotions, fears, ambitions and wounds.
And until you understand yourself, "technique" will not help.
After this book, I began to conduct consultations differently. Not about erections. About the value of a man as a feeling person.
๐ฌ 4. "Inception" (2010)
What is Nolan doing here?
Shows: our mind is a labyrinth.
And sexuality often gets stuck somewhere in childhood grievances, guilt towards the ex, fear of being vulnerable.
This is not a film about sex, but it is very much about how we lose contact with ourselves, and how important it is to return to it.
๐ 5. "Wild Men" is a film that sexologists do not recommend, but I will still say
Male friendship, midlife crisis, confusion, rebellion against routine.
It looks like a comedy, but behind it there is enormous loneliness and a search for meaning.
Sexuality there is not about bed. About the feeling that you are still alive.
๐ค Why is this important?
Because male sexuality is not about porn and "should".
But about the freedom to be yourself.
And until we admit our vulnerability, desires, fear of being rejected โ no โlife hacksโ will help.
๐ฌ And now to you:
What book or film changed your view of relationships, intimacy or yourself as a man?
Write in the comments โ I also want to read and watch what is important to you.
If you are interested, I can put together a selection of books for men who are tired of being โstrongโ and want to be real.
