USS R-14 didn't actually run out of fuel in 1921. She was sortied for an emergency search and rescue operation without her commanding officer aboard. The boat's diesel fuel was contaminated with salt water. The acting captain saved his batteries for the final run and with 3 jury-rigged sails, 64 hours later arrived off Hilo, Hawaii with the last short leg under electric power. Drach's South American adventure may refer to the Chaco War (1932-1935) between two land-locked countries: Paraguay and Bolivia. Fighting was with gunboats along the Paraguay River, an important supply route for the Paraguayan forces, but also interfered with civil activities by Brazil and Argentina.

Q&A - given how easily the Kreigsmarine surface fleet was neutralized, would the Kreigsmarine been better off not building anything heavier then the Hipper class Cruisers, and instead building more U-Boats with the resources?

Here's a weird variation on a ship that performed an unexpected role: While the Independence class CVLs were important for providing extra flight decks before most of the Essex carriers arrived, they also provided the fire control equipment (intended for Cleveland class CLs) for many of the Standard battleships. Which paid dividends at Surigao Strait.

The real advantage of the battle Cruiser version of Iowa would be that she should be cheaper to operate. And post WW2 the difference between 9 and 6 16" guns would not be significant.

Has anyone else noticed how hilarious the Closed Captioning is at times. So many words the CC has no idea about.

I think you overlooked the Dutch on that first question.
