Admiral McCain took over TF 38 after Leyte Gulf and it pretty much killed him, too. Spruance should have been teaching classes in how to survive the stress of command.

I think LeMay would’ve pushed for his B-29s to be sent against a beached Yamato anyway so he could cosplay as Mitchell Grim Reaper… And why do I get the sneaking feeling that if one of the British destroyers (if detached from the British Pacific Fleet and attached to the American task forces for whatever reason) got the word to steer clear while the battleships did their thing against Yamato, that British skipper would pull a Nelson-at-Copenhagen, say it was a pity they couldn’t read the transmissions, then ordered a charging attack anyway?

In our dark humor to deal with no end of danger on a US Navy steam powered ship, we described (euphemistically) the potential casualty of a turbine hitting itself (clearances went to less than zero) or something left in it as "high airborne particulate commensurate with low turbine density".

On the question of 3d printing a new ship, I would think CV 6 Enterprise would be a good entry for this.
