Overlay layer mode can be very confusing with the complex ways it mixes colors and values, so it might be useful to learn some basic principles behind it's logic and use them as pointers on the roadmap towards your goal. Hope this helps!

It is optimal for colorizing greyscale, as well as color-correction at any point of the painting process. But you can also adjust shading values by using only greys in the overlay layer, or add some tones to the lineart even, if you like the effect it gives)

SUPER useful! But, question - this is all advice strictly for the color step, right? Like, by this point, you've got a full grayscale going with shading finished?
