Quaaludes were drugs that were a brand name for Methaqualone, which is classified as a "hypnotic sedative" that, if used as prescribed, would function as a muscle relaxant and to treat insomnia. It was more often used as a club drug, referred to as "Ludes" or more irregularly, as "Disco Biscuits" etc. They stopped making them commercially in the 80's due to prevalent abuse and addictiveness. Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski were big fans however. It also shows up in the lyrics of several songs, including "That Smell" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
