Feel your feelings. Don't feel like you need to put on a show of emotions, but feel what you feel and don't feel like you have to apologize for it. I am a combat vet and end up in tears with this every time I watch at several points during a re-watch... but this year I get to watching with you, so know you aren't alone in having an emotional response. War is a terrible waste, and unless we allow it to be real for us, it starts sounding like a good idea to some folks, who need to be shouted down.

A luger is a German automatic pistol. It is an over-engineered iconic German weapon and was a frequent thing that Americans would often end up dying to take as a trophy. Trophy taking is frowned upon but also expected enough that troops would often booby trap bodies so that people coming by to steal from the dead would end up killed for their trouble. They intentionally blew up the German guns with TNT to keep them from being used against the Americans landing on the beach. Remember the shells falling on the beach at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan? These were some of the guns that were hitting the beach, and Easy company was helping to silence them. The trenches with waddle sides were made by the soldiers staffing the weapons, was functional both as busy work, and as a way of providing safety for the guys running the guns.
