Weekly Update - It's Time for Early labor

as promised this week I focused on working on the early labor part of the child birth mod. So far I was able to add an early labor stage successfully so that sims will go into early labor once they arrive at the hospital and wont give birth until they are fully dilated.
I also added Obstetrician to the hospital and they will be taking care of your sim during the birthing process.
After changing into the hospital gown, your sim will autonomously go to the hospital bed and lie down, that's where they will spend most of their time during early labor. you can still direct them to do things like using the toilet or eating, but they will always be drawn to going back and laying down.
nurses and obstetrician will come and talk to your sim occasionally during early labor
Obstetrician will sometimes perform checkups on your sim
During early labor you will still need to take care of your sims needs, I added the option to sleep on the hospital bed so that your sim will have a place to rest.
I also started working on the epidural animation and im about half way done, this is what it looks like right now
getting epidural is option, it will only be administered if you ask for it from the obstetrician.
Also, i was today years old when I learned epidural is actually inserting a tube into the epidural space around the spinal cord 😳 i thought its an anesthetic given solely by injecting with a syringe. This means I will need to make some adjustments on the animation, perhaps even adding an epidural tube and syringe that hangs around your sims shoulder so that you can administer it periodically during early labor.
I will also be making a yoga ball so that your sim can bring it with them and do exercises during early labor to help induce labor.
I am debating whether I should create a brand new hospital building similar to the one from private practice so that you can choose to use that hospital if you want to. The main reason I want to do this is because the layout for the currently hospital from get to work is not great for giving birth, your sim has to walk all the way across the building to use the washroom or get food, when ideally I want them to be able to do that in their own room with more privacy. I also want to make it so that taking hot bath will help ease the pain but there is no bathtub in the get to work hospital :/ I will have to look into what is needed to create a new hospital and see if its something I will be able to fit into the schedule I have right now.
next week I will focus on finishing the epidural animation, create the dilation system and the "check for dilation" animation, creating social interactions related to giving birth, and cleaning up any loose ends. hopefully I will come back with more good news next week!

Could you just loop the animation twice for twins and three times for triplets for now until you come up with a more detailed animation for multiples? One of my sims is currently pregnant with twins! Of all the times she and her husband would surprise me with a twin pregnancy! lol

So in love with this mod but just a quick question. While the sim is waiting to dilate will there be a place for their significant other or whoever they might have chosen to come with them to sit and hangout as well? Will there be an interaction for them to check on the sim in labor or something along those lines?

I reread; obviously the catheter is inserted even if given only one shot in case you need more. You can have a mobile one for early childbirth. So the doctor could give a shot several times. My sister gave birth in one, and it has less stress and the midwifes are not under a strict timing like in the hospitals. That helps everybody. And because they only take women with non-risk pregnancies and single babes the risk is low and you have the clinic nearby. It is a good compromise between clinic and housebirth. Have a nice week!

right now there is only one animation :( but in a later update I would like to update it so that the animation will actually change if you give birth to twins or triplets

for initial release it wont have any effect on the doctor career, because the doctor career is its own thing. I can indeed make it compatible with the doctor career in a later update.

interesting, if that's true then im actually leaning more towards not using a catheter, and make it so that you have to ask the obstetrician every time you need more epidural. just so that it will give both the doctor and the player more things to do. I actually really like the idea of a birthing house, it has a complete different vibe to it than the hospital. I will have to look into this for sure!

I know KawaiiStacie once had a mod that allows you to visit the hospital but I believe she took it down a while ago. Private Practice allows sims to visit clinics when they are sick, but it doesn't allow them to stay for too long. I think quite a few modder would be able to make a mod like that, basically anyone that has made mods related to active career or events should be able to do it.

You are absolutely fantastic, PandaSama! I am in absolute awe! Concerning the epidural - there is not necessarily a katheter inserted, many women are only given it once. It depends of course of the wanted length of the anasthesia. And the new building might be a good idea - why not ask KatieSimspire who did the buidings for Private Practice? She has experience with it. There are a lot of talented builders that could help you. An inspiration might be the Geburtshaus - Birthing House in Germany, which is run by midwifes. Women with uncomplicated pregnancies can go there to give birth in a relaxed atmosphere. In emergencies the clinic is nearby. They offer the exercise courses before and after birth too so you´ll have exercise rooms. Women leave after giving birth the next day. They work closely with the clinic and they will not take women with risky pregnancies and multiple birth. I was hoping private practice might make their mod compatible with yours at some point. Like they could add the objects/rooms you need to their hospital builds. That would be awesome! Idk how that would work though or if they’d be interested. And I feel like it would be acceptable for the sim version of an epidural to just be a shot in the back but more detail is never a bad thing!

I can't wait! You're AMAZING! Do you think there could be a mod that allows for sims to be so sick that they actually get admitted to a hospital and can have visitation? Like when a sim is admitted they temporarily live at the hospital and don't go to work. Their primary task would be to remain in bed. The more the sim stays in bed the better their chances of recovering and going home. Sims could also, maybe, randomly die from their illness even if the player keeps them in bed most of the time. Maybe have sims stay in a hospital no more than 2 sim weeks. If they stick to their assigned tasks/treatments and exercise they may possibly go home after just 2 sim days. Or do you know of any moders that may be able to make something like this? :)
