Subway Rat (Short Story)
🕑 Added 2023-10-27 18:07:31 +0000 UTCUnder the fluorescent lights of the subway station, the night seemed to stretch on indefinitely, a silent echo resonating through the tiled corridors. Tessa stood alone, the cold permeating through her thin jacket as she shifted from foot to foot. The digital clock on the wall flickered sporadically, teasing her with its inconsistent time jumps. She pulled her jacket tighter around her, cursing herself for working so late.
As another train roared by on the opposite track, she caught a slight movement out of the corner of her eye. Startled, she turned to see a small, shadowy figure skittering along the edge of the platform. Her heart softened when she realized it was a tiny creature, presumably lost and frightened by the rumbling of the trains.
Curiosity piqued, Tessa approached slowly, ensuring her steps were soft, almost like a whisper against the tiled floor. As she drew closer, she noticed the creature wasn't a mouse as she initially thought, but a rat. It was unusually cute, its fur surprisingly clean and eyes bright and curious. A pang of sympathy hit her; even city rats deserved some kindness.
Ignoring the initial hesitation that screamed in the back of her mind, she crouched down, extending her hand with the utmost caution, inviting the little creature to inspect her, to understand she meant no harm. The rat observed her, its small body frozen in what Tessa interpreted as contemplation. It then edged forward, whiskers twitching, the tiny, rapid breaths visible against the sterile light of the subway.
For a moment, everything was peaceful, and Tessa almost smiled. But then, the unexpected happened. With a speed she couldn't anticipate, the rat lunged forward and sank its teeth into her outstretched hand. Tessa cried out, jerking her hand back with a force that sent the rat scurrying into the darkness.
Blood beaded from the small wound, the pain sharp and immediate. Heart racing, Tessa scrambled to her feet, searching her bag for a tissue or anything she could use to press against the bite. Confusion and fear clouded her mind, questions piling upon each other. Why did it bite her? Should she go to the hospital? Wasn’t there something about rats carrying diseases?
As she stood there, alone, the bleeding slowing but the shock of the encounter still racing through her veins, Tessa felt the first lurch of nausea and dizziness. She leaned against the cold, impersonal wall of the subway, the rumbling of an approaching train only adding to the surreal fear spiraling within her.
The lights seemed to flicker, and the sounds around her became muffled, as though she were hearing them through a long tunnel. Her heart pounded in her ears, drowning out her frantic thoughts. The bite on her hand throbbed, a stark, pulsing reminder of the bizarre turn her night had taken. And amidst the fear and the confusion, she couldn’t shake off the feeling that something within her had just been irrevocably shifted.
The train’s arrival barely registered in Tessa's mind, her thoughts consumed by the bite and the sudden, overwhelming sense that the world around her was starting to spin out of control.
Tessa staggered onto the subway, her senses reeling as the doors closed with a hiss behind her. She clutched a pole for support, her other hand nursing the small bite wound. Her heart was a drum against her ribcage, the rhythm erratic and wild. Trying to calm her breathing, she closed her eyes, but a wave of vertigo made the darkness behind her lids seem as if it were spinning.
It started with a warmth that flushed through her body, uncomfortably feverish, followed by a tingling that sprang up in her extremities and coursed inward. Tessa’s eyes shot open in alarm as she felt her ears elongate, stretching upwards to points. A hand flew up to touch them, and she almost sobbed at the feel of thin, velvety fur.
“What’s happening to me?” she whispered in horror, the words barely escaping her throat.
She felt her nose twitch and reshape, pushing out into a snout, her teeth elongating in her mouth, sharp and foreign. A panic unlike anything she’d ever known filled her chest, making it hard to breathe. Tessa’s clothes felt suddenly restrictive, her body squirming against the unnatural changes overtaking her. Her chest tightened, and she gasped as it began to expand, the buttons of her shirt straining against the sudden increase in her bust. She felt them swell, a heavy fullness that was entirely new, the fabric of her shirt pulling at the seams.
Her pants, too, grew tight, and she felt a terrifying, impossible motion at the base of her spine. With a rip that echoed through the subway car, a thick tail burst through her pants, long and covered in sleek fur. She could feel it, could feel the way it moved with a life of its own, and a scream tore from her throat.
“Help me, please!” Tessa begged, her voice a strange, squeaky thing she barely recognized. She looked around frantically, only to realize that the other passengers were backing away from her, eyes wide with undisguised terror.
“Stay back!” someone yelled, a woman who had backed up against the doors.
“Somebody call 911!” another passenger shouted, his hands shaking so much he dropped his phone, the device clattering on the floor.
Tessa felt more changes, her skin itching as fur sprouted in patches, her hands and feet tingling as her nails thickened and darkened into claws. The pleasure from the transformation was undeniable, an undercurrent to her terror, making her shudder and gasp, even as tears streamed down her face.
The train started to slow, the lights of a station approaching, and Tessa, caught in the throes of her unimaginable transformation, made a decision. She couldn’t stay here, couldn’t become...whatever she was becoming in front of these people.
As the train came to a stop and the doors opened, she took her chance. Stumbling and unsteady on feet that felt too small and nimble, Tessa fled from the subway car, her tail whipping behind her.
Tessa's heart pounded like a frantic drum, echoing in her hollow chest as the transformation mercilessly progressed. With every second, her connection to her humanity unraveled a little more, her reflection in the polished subway ads becoming increasingly foreign.
"Oh no, no, no..." she whimpered, the sound more of a squeak than words. Her hands, once dexterous, had shrunk into tiny, furred paws, fingers merging as nails thickened into hard, dark claws. Tessa tried to call out for help, but her voice was a mere series of high-pitched cries, unintelligible and shrill.
The ground seemed to rush towards her as she shrank, the world around growing vast and imposing. People around her screamed, scrambling away as they realized the woman who had boarded the train was condensing into something small, something they recognized from nightmares and dark alleyways.
"Monster!" someone yelled from a distance, their voice tinged with raw fear.
The fabric of her clothes became a landscape of hills and valleys, her body diminishing. Tessa’s entire being was dominated by the sensation of 'less'—less weight, less presence, less humanity. The terror was all-consuming, a tidal wave, and in its grip, she could hardly think, could hardly process the reality that she was shrinking away from existence as she knew it.
"It's turning into a rat!" Another passenger shrieked, their feet pounding on the platform as they bolted, their abandoned belongings forgotten in the panic.
Tessa was losing herself, her thoughts growing fuzzy and disoriented, instincts she didn’t recognize nibbling at the edges of her consciousness. Her perspective of the world altered, fear magnifying everything around her into grotesque proportions. The echoing stomps of fleeing feet were like thunderclaps, the distant conversations a cacophony she couldn’t understand.
And then, she was freefalling, slipping through her oversized clothing and onto the cold, hard ground. For a terrifying moment, she was ensnared, the world darkened by the heap of fabric that was once her outfit. Confusion and panic were her world as she struggled, the scent of her old life strong and somehow foreign.
Her little claws caught on the fabric, and with immense effort, she wriggled and pushed. There was a moment of utter panic, the fear of being trapped overwhelming her. Then, suddenly, she was tumbling out into the harsh fluorescent light of the subway station, naked and exposed in a body that was no longer hers.
Her senses were assaulted by the strength of smells and sounds. The metallic tang of the subway rails, the sweat and fear of the humans, the distant rumble of trains, and the scurrying of distant, unseen creatures. Everything was sharper, more profound, yet the world was larger and more terrifying than she'd ever imagined.
Tessa's new body moved with a will of its own, instincts propelling her into a frantic dash for safety. The huge, monstrous forms of humans towered above, their faces distorted by her new vision into leering giants. She squeaked in terror, darting this way and that to avoid being crushed underfoot.
As she scampered, her mind was a whirl of fragmented thoughts. What was happening back at her apartment? Would anyone even know what became of her? What about her family, her job, her... her entire life?
But those thoughts were quickly being eroded by more immediate concerns: the need for shelter, for safety from the stomping feet and the terrifying noises all around. She needed to hide, to escape the bright lights and the screaming, to find darkness and quiet.
Her heart, tiny and rapid in her chest, guided her in blind panic towards a narrow, shadowed space between a trash can and the wall. She squeezed in, the coolness of the concrete a small comfort against her hot, quivering fur.
There, in the shadows, Tessa tried to understand, to think through the animalistic fear that consumed her. She was alone, utterly and entirely, in a form she never could have imagined. The world was a vast, hostile place, and she was small, so very small within it.
Her thoughts, fractured and slipping further away with each passing moment, clung desperately to a single, anchoring fact: she was Tessa. She had a life, a past, dreams, fears... She was human.
Wasn’t she?
