Side Story 18: Get Ready!
🕑 Added 2024-07-11 16:55:00 +0000 UTCKlaus Weber
The Federal Office for Protecting the Constitution, also known as Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV), was in a nondescript building in the heart of Berlin, blending in with other office blocks. On one side was a big accounting firm; on the other was an office building with various attorneys. Surrounded by this hustle and bustle, Klaus Weber, a veteran agent, was about to be handed a document that would push his skepticism and cynicism to the limit.
Throughout his twenty-year tenure at the BfV, Klaus came across many bizarre claims and outlandish conspiracy theories. No matter what he heard, be it alien abductions, classified government mind control initiatives, satanist cults, chemtrails, or the Illuminati, he reached a point where he remained unaffected. He had heard it all and was tired of hearing more drivel. He took pride in sorting through the chaos and identifying the dangers to the country’s security.
The document arrived on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. While Klaus sat at his desk, drinking his fourth cup of coffee for the day and examining the latest intelligence briefings, a knock interrupted his concentration.
“Enter.”
Lisa, a junior analyst, entered his office. “Another one for you, Herr Weber,” she said, placing a bulky package on his desk.
With a glance, Klaus noticed the envelope’s missing return address and worn edges, which showed that multiple people had handled it before it reached him. He raised an eyebrow but said nothing as Lisa left the room. With a sigh, he put down his coffee and picked up the envelope, tearing it open.
He found a lengthy manuscript titled “The Integration of Earth into the Mana System: A First-Hand Account.” Klaus’s eyes narrowed. He had heard of “mana” in connection to video games and fantasy novels, but seeing it in an official report was unusual.
The manuscript described the adventures of a self-proclaimed “Gate Traveler” who had come across portals to alternate dimensions. The author claimed firsthand knowledge of Earth’s soon-to-be integration into a wide-ranging network of worlds imbued with mana. Klaus read about the diverse stages of this integration process, the surge in many levels, and the inescapable collapse of advanced technology. The manuscript also suggested that, over time, individuals would receive classes resembling those found in LITRPG stories, influencing their careers and life trajectories.
As he continued reading, Klaus couldn’t help but shake his head. The descriptions contained detailed information, but they seemed more like a fantasy novel than a legitimate intelligence report. He skimmed sections about trading and healing, sailing in an enchanted boat, and a dog that loved television. The author claimed he had sent this document to government agencies worldwide to warn about the imminent disaster.
Klaus leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his thinning hair. After three days, he had read enough. People have attempted to present fictional tales as valid before. He picked up the phone and dialed Lisa’s extension.
“Lisa, can you come here for a moment?” he asked.
A few moments later, Lisa entered the room. “Yes, Herr Weber?”
Klaus held up the manuscript. “Did you read any of this?”
She nodded. “A bit, yes. It’s... interesting.”
“Interesting is one way to put it,” Klaus said cynically. “It’s a load of nonsense. Mana systems, portals to other worlds, integration processes—it’s pure fantasy. We have more important things to attend to than entertaining someone’s wild imagination.”
Lisa looked somewhat hesitant. “But what if—”
Klaus cut her off. “What if it’s true? Lisa, do you remember the ‘Lizard People’ incident? Or the ‘Atlantis Reborn’ report? We’ve been down this road before. We must safeguard the nation from dangers, not pursue nonexistent ones.”
Lisa nodded reluctantly. “You’re right, of course. I just thought—”
“I know,” Klaus said, softening his tone. “But we have our priorities. There is no proof to back up any of these claims. It’s just another distraction.”
He reached over to his shredder and fed the manuscript into the shredder. The machine turned the pages into confetti, filling the room with a whirring noise. Klaus felt a sense of satisfaction as the last piece of the document disappeared.
“Let’s get back to work,” he said, dismissing Lisa.
After she left, Klaus redirected his attention to his computer and swiftly dismissed the manuscript. Genuine dangers, including terrorist groups, cyber threats, and political spying, needed to be addressed, not some wild story about magic. In his world, there was no room for thoughts about magic and portals.
However, as he returned to his usual activities, a lingering doubt persisted in his thoughts. What if, on this one occasion, the impossible happened? Klaus shook his head, rejecting the idea. He was a logical and evidence-based individual, and there was no place for imagination or whimsical ideas in his profession. The threats to his country were real, and he needed to address them.
Several weeks passed, and Klaus continued his work, gradually forgetting about the manuscript. He couldn’t help but notice a string of peculiar incidents being reported throughout Europe. Technological issues, unexplained natural phenomena, and strange events appeared more and more often. Individually, it was easy to explain each incident, but they formed an alarming picture when taken as a whole.
One evening, as Klaus prepared to leave the office, Lisa knocked on his door again.
“Herr Weber, I think you should see this,” she said, handing him a tablet.
Klaus took the tablet and scanned the report. It was an analysis of the recent incidents compiled by various intelligence agencies across Europe. The results were uncertain, but the irregularities were unquestionable. Recalling the manuscript he had shredded weeks ago sent an icy shiver down his spine.
“Do you think...?” Lisa began, but Klaus shook his head.
“We don’t have enough evidence,” he said, though his voice lacked its usual conviction. “Keep an eye on it. If anything more concrete comes up, we’ll reassess.”
Lisa nodded and left the room. Leaning back in his chair, Klaus stared at the tablet. The doubts lingering in his mind came back in full force. Was he too hasty to dismiss the manuscript? Did he underestimate the story?
He searched for information about the author, John Rue, to reassure himself that it was nothing. But what he discovered only heightened his concern: John Rue had disappeared in Frankfurt on the exact day mentioned in the manuscript. He shook his head, trying to be reasonable. Undoubtedly, some unscrupulous writer had exploited a tragedy to give his nonsense an air of legitimacy. With a sigh, he headed home. He needed rest—tomorrow would bring actual threats, not imagined ones filled with magic and absurdity.
That night, Klaus couldn’t sleep. The details from the manuscript kept circling in his mind—the rising mana levels, the technological collapse, the sudden appearance of mana beasts and monsters. He needed to investigate further and put the matter to rest once and for all.
The next day, Klaus arrived at the office early. Delving into the archives, he searched for any information that could support the claims made in the manuscript. He contacted individuals from different agencies, seeking their perspectives on the recent anomalies. He assigned Lisa to monitor online forums and fringe websites covertly for any references to mana or people developing unusual abilities.
As the weeks went by, Klaus’s investigation yielded minor results. Accounts of peculiar incidents corresponded to the projections in the manuscript, but there was no tangible evidence. Klaus struggled to connect the dots, sometimes feeling like a conspiracy theorist, meticulously seeking minuscule details to validate his imagination.
One evening, while going through more reports, he received a call from a former colleague in the French intelligence agency.
“Klaus, I’ve been hearing some strange things,” his friend said. “Unexplainable phenomena, technology breaking down—just weird stuff. Do you know what’s going on?”
Klaus hesitated. “I’m not sure, Jean. But I have a feeling we might be dealing with something unprecedented.”
“What do you mean?”
“Have you heard about a manuscript sent to government agencies? Something about integrating with mana?”
“Yeah, I heard about that. I thought it was just some author trying to promote his book.”
“I’m not so sure anymore. There might be some truth to it.”
“Hmm, I’ll try to track it down and see what it’s about,” Jean said, then bid him goodbye.
A few days later, Jean called again, skipping the usual pleasantries. “You think it’s real?”
“I’m not sure, but the coincidences keep piling up.”
Jean was quiet for a moment. “Do you need help?”
Klaus sighed. “I need information. Anything you can find on this... mana integration theory.”
“I’ll try my best,” Jean said. “But Klaus, be certain. If this is as big as you think, we’re in uncharted territory. But if it’s not ...”
Klaus didn’t need to hear the rest. If it was not, it meant the end of his career.
After the call, Klaus sat in silence, staring at the piles of documents on his desk. He felt the heavy burden of his responsibilities pressing him down. Initially, he had disregarded the manuscript as mere fantasy, but now he couldn’t help but feel that he had made a severe error.
Klaus doubled his efforts with a firm resolve to compensate for lost time. With an unwavering determination, he worked late every night, following every lead, no matter how small. In his search for answers, he reached out to experts from various fields, seeking their insights on the anomalies. He returned to the torn pieces of the manuscript, trying to reconstruct as much as possible, using his memory and the fragments.
As the puzzle pieces gradually fit together, a troubling image surfaced. The anomalies were not random; they were part of a pattern that pointed to a gradual but undeniable shift in the very fabric of reality. The manuscript’s warning proved true as technology had more and more glitches, unexplained natural disasters occurred, materials deteriorated, sea and ocean currents changed, and strange phenomena were happening all around the globe.
Klaus knew he had to act quickly. He convened an urgent meeting with his superiors, where he presented his findings and strongly advised them to acknowledge the threat. Afterward, he contacted his network of connections throughout Europe, sharing his knowledge and urging a synchronized reaction.
The response was mixed. Some dismissed his warnings as paranoia, while others were more willing to consider the possibility. However, with the increasing number of unusual incidents reported, skepticism transformed into cautious concern. What finally tipped the boat were reports that arrived about people exhibiting supernatural abilities. Initially, people could dismiss the reports as someone’s overactive imagination, but as more and more of them came, even the skeptics began to believe.
In the following months, Klaus and his colleagues worked tirelessly to prepare for the worst-case scenario. They established protocols for dealing with mana-related phenomena, trained special units to handle potential threats, and contacted other nations for cooperation.
When the mana waves hit, the world changed in ways few could have imagined. Urban areas changed, and people had to learn how to harness mana to safeguard against its potential threats. Faced with a common threat, nations formed new alliances and set aside old rivalries.
Years later, as the integration process neared its completion and the mana levels stabilized, Klaus looked back on those tumultuous times with pride and regret. He witnessed unimaginable changes in the world, yet he also understood the significance of remaining open-minded and receptive to even the most improbable warning.
Commissioner Maria Sanchez
In Mexico City, Commissioner Maria Sanchez of the Federal Police gained a reputation for her no-nonsense approach and dedication to public safety. When the hefty manual arrived on her desk, she approached it pragmatically.
Sanchez found satisfaction in her talent for staying level-headed. In her career, Sanchez faced many challenges, including drug cartels and natural disasters, while navigating a profession still considered male-dominated in her country. She prided herself on her ability to remain grounded and focused. Still, this record stood out from the rest she had seen.
As she read the manuscript, Sanchez couldn’t overlook the remarkable parallels between the described phenomena and recent events worldwide. Her practical nature made her consider contingencies, even for seemingly impossible scenarios.
Determined to investigate further, Sanchez began discreetly monitoring the city for signs of the impending change. She noticed subtle shifts: street dogs forming unusually organized packs, unexplained temperature fluctuations in specific neighborhoods, and a strange humming sound accompanied by eerie lights emanating from ancient Aztec ruins.
Concerned by these observations, Sanchez took the manuscript to her superior, Secretary of Public Security Alejandro Martinez.
“Alejandro, I need you to look at this,” Sanchez said, placing the document on his desk.
Martinez briefly skimmed the title and asked. “Mana systems? Other worlds? Maria, this sounds like fiction.”
“I know it seems unbelievable,” Sanchez replied, “But hear me out. These unusual occurrences align with what’s described here. The changes in animal behavior and environmental anomalies are all here.”
Martinez laughed, shaking his head. “Maria, focus on actual issues. We don’t have time for ghost stories. We have dangerous criminals to catch and real problems to solve.”
Frustrated but resolute, Sanchez took matters into her own hands. She diverted funds from the “community outreach” budget to establish a secret task force. They trained in alternative combat techniques, studied ancient Mexican folklore for clues, and mapped out potential “mana vents” locations based on the manuscript and the temperature fluctuations.
Months passed, and Sanchez continued her work; the manuscript was always in her thoughts. Reports of strange happenings grew, but there was still no solid proof to persuade her superiors. The Federal Police had more pressing matters, and Martinez had dismissed her concerns.
One evening, as Sanchez was reviewing reports, she received an urgent call from an officer stationed near Teotihuacan.
“Commissioner, something strange is happening at the pyramids,” the officer said, his voice shaking. “They’re... glowing. And people are claiming to have suddenly developed strange abilities.”
Sanchez’s heart raced. “Stay calm. I’m on my way. Don’t approach anyone exhibiting unusual abilities, and keep civilians away from the site.”
As Sanchez rushed to Teotihuacan, she realized the phenomena aligned with the manuscript’s predictions. The integration had begun, and Mexico City was at the epicenter. By the time she arrived, the phenomena had already subsided, but she knew it was only a matter of time before it returned in full force.
A few days later, when the first mana wave hit, it caused a resurgence of ancient Aztec magic. Teotihuacan pyramid pulsed with ethereal light, and people throughout the city spontaneously gained magical abilities linked to their ancestral bloodlines.
As chaos erupted, Sanchez’s prepared team maintained some order. They quickly established safe zones and helped evacuate people from dangerous areas. Martinez found Sanchez at the base of the Pyramid of the Sun, negotiating a truce between fighting factions that now added magic to the mix.
“I never believed it possible,” he admitted, watching in awe as a man conjured fire in his hands. “How do we proceed?”
Sanchez smiled grimly. “We adapt. Our city is awakening to its ancient power. We must guide it into the future.”
Reaching the gathered crowd, a mix of frightened civilians and newly awakened individuals, Sanchez felt the weight of her responsibility as a newly awakened Arcane Guardian.
“Citizens of Mexico City,” she began, her voice filled with the authority of her new class. “We stand at the threshold of a new era. Our world is changing, awakening to powers long forgotten, and we are at the forefront of this transformation. We must navigate this change together, use these gifts responsibly, and protect those who are vulnerable.”
With renewed determination, Sanchez turned back to Martinez. “We have work to do. Let’s show the world how Mexico City rises to meet this challenge.”
As they organized their response to the unfolding crisis, Sanchez felt trepidation and excitement. The world as they knew it was changing, but they were ready to face it head-on, armed with preparation, determination, and the awakening magic of their ancestors.
Inspector Hiroshi Tanaka
In Tokyo, Inspector Hiroshi Tanaka of the Metropolitan Police Department was a respected figure known for his meticulous nature and dedication to his duty. When he received the manuscript, he approached it with the precision of a scientist.
Tanaka had built his career on careful analysis and logical thinking. He had solved many complex cases and had a reputation for his ability to connect seemingly unrelated pieces of information. This document, however, challenged everything he thought he knew about the world.
As he read the manuscript, Tanaka couldn’t ignore the striking similarities between the described phenomena and recent reports of unexplained events worldwide. With characteristic thoroughness, he created detailed lists of the reported phenomena and methodically tracked their locations.
Tanaka observed increased technological glitches near ancient shrines, the unusually rapid growth of sacred trees, and reports of yokai sightings in rural areas. According to the manuscript, there appeared to be a connection between the increase in mana levels and these occurrences.
Determined to investigate further, Tanaka brought the manuscript to his commanding officer, Chief Superintendent Yuki Nakamura.
“Nakamura-san, please read this,” Tanaka said and placed the document and his meticulous notes on the desk.
Nakamura glanced at the title and shook his head. “Mana systems? Other worlds? Tanaka-san, this is beneath you. You’re one of our best inspectors; you shouldn’t waste time on fairy tales.”
“I understand your skepticism, sir,” Tanaka replied calmly, “but please consider the evidence I’ve gathered. These phenomena we’ve been observing align perfectly with what’s described here. The technological anomalies, environmental changes, and the increase in folklore-related sightings are documented.”
Nakamura sighed, flipping through Tanaka’s notes. “You’ve always been thorough, Hiroshi, but this... this is too fantastic to be real. Concentrate on your responsibilities. We have a lot of open cases and don’t have time for fantasy.”
Undeterred by Nakamura’s dismissal, Tanaka continued his investigation discreetly. He formed a secret study group with academics, blending modern science with ancient Japanese mysticism to prepare for the integration. They analyzed the correlation between technological failures and proximity to spiritual sites, studied the sudden acceleration of plant growth in sacred groves, and documented the increasing reports of yokai sightings.
Months passed, and Tanaka continued his work, the manuscript lingering at the forefront of his mind. Reports of strange occurrences increased, yet there was still no concrete proof to persuade his superiors. Most of the sightings were in rural areas, and the police dismissed them as the overactive imagination of superstitious locals. The Metropolitan Police Department had more urgent issues to address, and Nakamura had largely dismissed Tanaka’s concerns.
When the first mana wave hit Tokyo, it manifested as a great awakening of kami spirits across Japan. Technology failed as ancient magic surged, and long-dormant yokai emerged from hiding. The neon lights of Shibuya flickered and died, replaced by ethereal glows emanating from awakened objects and beings.
Tanaka arrived at Senso-ji to find a scene of beautiful chaos. The temple’s statues had come to life, their stone forms now fluid and animate. Kitsune darted between bewildered crowds, their multiple tails glowing with foxfire.
Despite the uproar, Tanaka’s prepared team sprang into action. They used modern police tactics and traditional onmyoji techniques to maintain order and protect civilians. Tanaka found he could now sense the flow of mana, and used this newfound ability to identify areas of danger and stability.
As he coordinated the response efforts, Tanaka spotted Chief Superintendent Nakamura stumbling through the crowd, his eyes wide with disbelief.
“Tanaka-san,” Nakamura called out, his voice trembling, “what’s happening? How is this possible?”
Tanaka approached his superior calmly. “The integration has begun, Nakamura-san. As the manuscript predicted, our world is merging with the realm of mana and spirits.”
Nakamura watched in awe as a Kitsuné assisted Tanaka’s team with crowd control, gently herding people toward safe zones with its illusions. “What do you suggest we do first?” He asked.
Tanaka pulled out a detailed plan from his jacket—a testament to his thorough preparation. “First, we must set up safe zones in areas with low mana levels. Then, we must establish communication channels that don’t rely on failing technology. We’ll use modern methods and traditional techniques like spirit messengers.”
As they began implementing Tanaka’s plan, the inspector couldn’t help but reflect on the magnitude of the change they were facing. Despite the transformation of the known world, Japan preserved a unique blend of old and new. Perhaps they had an exceptional preparation for this integration into magic, merging modern society and ancient spirits.
As Tanaka led his team through the awakening city, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of purpose and even excitement. The integration brought immense challenges but also incredible possibilities. Whatever the future held, he was ready to face it, armed with knowledge, preparation, and an open mind to the wonders and dangers of this new, mana-infused world.
Captain David “Dave” Ramsey
Captain David “Dave” Ramsey of the Los Angeles Fire Department sat in his small, cluttered office, staring at a thick manuscript that had just arrived. Dave was a seasoned firefighter with over 25 years of experience. He had witnessed various disasters, from enormous wildfires to destructive earthquakes, but this document was unlike anything he had ever encountered.
Dave carefully read through the neatly typed pages. At first, he didn’t take the document seriously, but his intuition was reacting, which worried him. Over the years, he had learned to trust his gut. His family had roots in Scotland, and their folklore claimed they had seers in the past. He wasn’t sure about the seer part, but his intuition was legendary among his men. The more he read, the more uneasy he felt. What if it was true? What if Earth faced an unexpected transformation?
He knew they would laugh him out of the room if he told his superiors or colleagues this. Firefighters trained to handle real-life emergencies like fires, earthquakes, and accidents, rather than fictional scenarios from science fiction books. Yet, Dave couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something real, something dangerous, in the author’s words.
For days, Dave mulled over the manuscript, weighing his options. While he was not one to indulge in flights of fancy, he had honed his ability to trust his instincts through experience. And his instincts were screaming at him to listen.
He searched for corroborating evidence online, and one story that caught his attention involved a group that had assisted after a level-five twister near Albuquerque. The story, pieced together from various sources, described a man who healed with a touch and a man, woman, and dog displaying supernatural strength and agility as they rescued survivors. Although the account was nearly six months old and there had been no further reports about the group since, it matched the description in the manuscript from the group’s perspective. To Dave, that was the clincher—the manuscript was actual. He took the warnings seriously and quietly began preparing his team, careful not to draw too much attention.
Dave started by ordering additional supplies and equipment. He reallocated the budget to buy items that could be useful in various scenarios: extra water and food rations, medical supplies, batons, and tranquilizers. He justified these purchases under the pretext of “emergency preparedness” for earthquakes and wildfires, pointing out the frequent issue of wildlife escaping from the fires—a common concern in California.
Afterward, he began incorporating new training drills into their daily regimen. Dave implemented drills involving various disaster scenarios, such as technological failures, encounters with unknown entities, and managing large-scale evacuations to improve their disaster response capabilities. His team grumbled initially, but Dave’s reputation and leadership kept them compliant.
“Why are we doing this, Cap?” one of his lieutenants, Jake Morales, asked after a tough drill. “Feels like we’re prepping for an alien invasion or something.”
Dave managed a wry smile. “You never know what might happen, Jake. Better to be over-prepared than surprised.”
As the months went by, Dave’s preparations intensified. He discreetly contacted several reliable friends within the emergency services network, subtly gauging their preparedness and expressing his concerns without disclosing where he got the information. While most people were doubtful, a small number, such as Tom Grayson, his old friend and fellow firefighter, were receptive to what he had to say.
“I don’t know, Dave,” Tom said during one of their late-night phone calls. “This sounds pretty out there, but you’re not the kind of guy to go off the deep end. What do you need from me?”
“Just keep an eye out for anything unusual,” Dave replied. “And maybe start stockpiling some supplies of your own. Can’t hurt to be prepared.”
A problematic aspect of Dave’s plan was figuring out how to handle the potential danger posed by mana beasts, monsters, and other supernatural phenomena. He started delving into historical records about mythical creatures and seeking advice from experts in folklore and biology. He even found a few people who said they had experienced unexplained events at their jobs.
In addition to conventional weapons, Dave quietly bought equipment that might deal with non-human threats—net launchers, heavy-duty ropes, reinforced cages, and handheld snares. He organized exclusive training sessions for a handpicked group of firefighters he had complete faith in, instructing them on using the new equipment while keeping his worries hidden.
“Just some precautionary measures,” he told them. “In case we ever run into something... unusual.”
Despite his best efforts to keep things secret, rumors circulated within the department. Some firefighters joked about Dave’s “paranoia,” while others were genuinely curious about the changes. Dave skillfully avoided answering their questions, consistently sticking to the story of improved readiness for disasters.
As the months passed, Dave continued to monitor the situation closely. He diligently combed through news reports, scientific journals, and online forums, searching for any sign that the specified integration process was beginning. Occasionally, he stumbled upon accounts of technological malfunctions or strange sightings, but none provided enough solid evidence to validate his concerns.
One evening, as Dave pored over the latest reports in his office, Jake knocked on the door and walked in.
“Cap, you got a minute?” he asked, looking more severe than usual.
“Sure, Jake. What’s up?” Dave replied, gesturing for him to sit down.
Jake handed over a folder, his expression serious. “We’ve been receiving some odd reports lately. People are talking about strange animal behavior, feeling an unusual energy in the air, and... other things.” He paused, his tone careful. “Normally, I’d dismiss it as paranoia or overactive imaginations, but there’s been too much of it to ignore.”
Dave narrowed his eyes, sensing something was being held back. “Other things?”
Jake shifted uncomfortably, his gaze darting away momentarily before he sighed and looked back at Dave. “There have been a few accounts... unconfirmed, but they’re troubling. People have claimed to witness things that can’t be explained—like a man vanishing into thin air, another person walking through a solid wall, and someone who seemed to heal a deep wound with just a touch. There’s even talk of objects moving independently, like something from those old stories.”
Dave’s heart sank as he listened, his mind immediately recalling descriptions from the manuscript. The puzzle was coming together, and he was starting to realize the truth. The mana waves hadn’t arrived yet, but it was beginning—at least the precursor signs were there.
“Thanks, Jake. I’ll look into this,” Dave said, trying to keep his voice steady.
Jake hesitated. “Cap, what’s going on? We’ve all noticed the changes, the extra drills, the new gear. Are we in some danger you’re not telling us about?”
Dave took a deep breath. For a long time, he had dreaded this moment. Despite his initial intention to keep his concerns to himself, the mounting evidence compelled him to reveal the truth to his team.
“Jake, I need you to trust me on this,” Dave began. “I came across some information a while back that suggested we might be facing a... unique kind of threat. I didn’t want to alarm anyone until I was sure, but now it looks like some threats might be real.”
Jake’s eyes widened. “What kind of threat are we talking about?”
Dave handed him the manuscript. “Read this. Enough is there that aligns with what we’ve been seeing lately. I need you and the others to be ready for anything.”
Jake took the manuscript, looking both skeptical and concerned. “Alright, Cap. I’ll read it. But if this is for real, what do we do next?”
“Keep doing what we’ve been doing,” Dave said. “Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and stay vigilant. We’ve faced tough situations before and face this together.”
As Jake left the office, Dave felt a weight lift off his shoulders. He had involved his team, but there was still a lot of work ahead. He consistently improved their training, updated protocols, and ensured they were equipped and knowledgeable enough to handle any situation.
Over the following weeks, Dave’s preparations paid off. His team acted quickly and efficiently in handling reports of unusual events, addressing threats, and helping the public discreetly. The rumors in the department quieted down as firefighters recognized the worth of their improved training and equipment.
As Dave was wrapping up his shift one night, the station suddenly went dark. Every light, every hum of machinery, vanished in an instant. Dave’s stomach dropped—it was just as he’d feared. The mana wave had hit.
As the silence settled over the station, his phone went dead in his hand, cutting off his last connection to the outside world. There was no way to call for backup or warn others. He quickly gathered his team and briefed them on what they had trained for.
“We’re on our own now,” Dave said, his voice steady despite the rising tension. “Technology’s gone, and we’re about to see things no one’s prepared for. Stay sharp, stay together, and remember what we’ve learned.”
The team moved out into the city, now eerily silent except for the distant sounds of confusion and panic. Cars blocked the streets, and people wandered in a daze. Some, especially the younger generation, displayed glee at their newfound powers, excitedly experimenting with them. At the same time, most were more frightened by the powers than by the small but deadly creatures that had appeared. Others fled in terror, overwhelmed by the sudden and terrifying changes around them.
Dave and his firefighters worked tirelessly through the night, containing threats, rescuing civilians from the emerging monsters, and helping those who suddenly developed strange abilities. The chaos was unlike anything they had faced before, but their training kicked in, and they adapted, using their knowledge to bring some semblance of order to the unfolding disaster.
As dawn broke, the city showed scars but remained standing. Dave looked around at his exhausted team, knowing they had made a difference. The mana wave had come, and a new world had begun to take shape with it. But they had survived the first night, meaning there was hope.
In the days that followed, the integration process sped up. Mana levels continued to rise, and the world adapted to its new reality. Dave’s team emerged as frontrunners in overseeing the transition, and their training and ability to expect the future resulted in the preservation of many lives.
Though the journey was far from over, Dave felt proud of his team’s resilience and determination. They had faced the unknown and emerged stronger for it, ready to tackle whatever challenges lay ahead.
Agent Sarah Collins
Agent Sarah Collins of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) sat in her office in Canberra, reading the document. It had arrived through an international intelligence-sharing network, which flagged it as potentially critical information.
Sarah had been with ASIO for over a decade, specializing in threat assessment and analysis of unconventional risks. She took great pride in her talent for distinguishing credible threats from baseless conspiracies. This document, however, left her both intrigued and deeply concerned.
As she delved deeper into the manuscript, Sarah couldn’t help but notice the resemblances between the described phenomena and recent unexplained events across Australia. The detailed accounts of rising mana levels and impending global changes seemed far-fetched, but it paused her.
Sarah meticulously documented occurrences that aligned with the predictions. She noticed subtle changes: unusual animal behavior in the Outback, unexplained luminescent phenomena in the Great Barrier Reef, and reports of Aboriginal elders experiencing heightened spiritual connections to the land.
Determined to investigate further, Sarah took her findings to her superior, Director James Hartley.
“Sir, please look at what I found,” she said, placing the document and her notes on his desk.
Hartley glanced at the title and frowned. “Mana systems? Integration? Collins, this sounds like something out of a fantasy novel.”
“I know it sounds incredible,” Sarah replied, “but please hear me out. These phenomena we’ve seen across the country match what’s described here. The ecological anomalies, the reports from Indigenous communities, it’s all lining up.”
Hartley shook his head, sighing. “Sarah, you’re among our best analysts, but this is a stretch. We have actual threats to national security to deal with. I can’t allocate resources based on... this.”
“Sir, if this is real, it’s the biggest threat to national security we’ve ever faced,” Sarah insisted.
Hartley’s expression hardened. “Enough, Collins. I want you to focus on your regular duties. That’s an order.”
Frustrated but undeterred, Sarah continued her investigation of the book. She reached out to contacts in various fields—ecologists, geologists, anthropologists, and even a few experts in Australian folklore. Together, they formed a covert network to monitor and document the increasing anomalies across the continent.
As months passed, reports of unusual occurrences increased dramatically. The Great Barrier Reef began emitting pulses of bioluminescence visible from space. Uluru glowed with an inner light, drawing Aboriginal people from across the country who claimed to hear the voices of their ancestors. In the Outback, people reported seeing mythical creatures like bunyips and drop bears.
Sarah diligently compiled all this information, preparing for the day when she would finally prove her point. She also began discreet preparations, stockpiling supplies and developing contingency plans for various scenarios outlined in the manuscript.
The first mana wave hit, plunging the room into darkness as a blackout swept through the city. Panic rippled through those present, but Sarah quickly intervened, her calm demeanor helping to steady the room. They waited in tense silence, hoping for news. After less than an hour, the electricity flickered back on, and reports began pouring in, confirming the unimaginable.
Sarah stood up, her detailed reports in hand. “Ladies and gentlemen,” she began, her voice firm and composed, “I can explain what’s happening and what we can expect next. We must act fast to minimize the chaos and protect as many people as possible. Australia’s unique ecosystem and indigenous spiritual connections might make our integration process different from other parts of the world.”
As she outlined the stages of integration and their challenges, Sarah couldn’t help but feel a mix of retribution and dread. The continent was changing rapidly, with ancient Dreamtime creatures materializing in cities and the Outback alike.
“First,” she said, addressing the stunned officials, “we need to establish communication protocols that don’t rely on our failing technology. Then, we must work closely with Aboriginal elders – their traditional knowledge might be crucial in navigating this new reality. We also need to prepare for the emergence of mana beasts and monsters and the formation of dungeons, particularly in areas of spiritual significance.”
As the room erupted into action, Sarah allowed herself a moment of reflection. The manuscript had been right about everything so far. She could only hope that Australia’s vast, ancient landscape and the resilience of its people would be advantages in the challenging times ahead.
As she began coordinating Australia’s response to the integration, Sarah couldn’t help but wonder how the rest of the world was faring. Little did she know, her counterparts in other countries faced similar challenges, each adapting to the integration uniquely.
Chief Inspector Thomas Hardy
Chief Inspector Thomas Hardy of Scotland Yard was no stranger to bizarre cases in London. But when he received and read the manuscript, he felt a chill run down his spine. Known for his uncanny intuition, that inner voice was now screaming danger.
Hardy had a reputation for being thorough and methodical. He had solved many high-profile cases and earned a reputation for his keen analytical mind. But this document left him both fascinated and deeply unsettled.
As he read the manuscript, Hardy couldn’t ignore the uncanny similarities between the described phenomena and recent reports of unexplained events across England. He noticed subtle changes in London and beyond: reports of stone circles glowing faintly and emanating a low hum, accelerated plant growth in places like Avebury and Glastonbury, and increasing technological glitches in advanced systems such as AI-driven devices and high-speed communication networks. The alignment between the manuscript’s descriptions and these events was too striking to dismiss.
Determined to investigate further, Hardy took the manuscript to his superior, Assistant Commissioner Margaret Thompson. As he placed the document on her desk, he couldn’t ignore the skeptical look as she glanced at the title. “Mana systems? Other worlds? This sounds like a fairy tale,” she said, but Hardy persisted.
He explained how the recent, subtle changes in the country—stone circles glowing faintly, accelerated growth in places like Glastonbury, and strange technological glitches—aligned perfectly with the events described in the manuscript. Despite his conviction and the eerie alignment of facts, Thompson remained unconvinced, dismissing his concerns as overwork and urging him to take a holiday. To her, these were coincidences, not a conspiracy, and she had more pressing, tangible issues to handle.
Undeterred by Thompson’s dismissal, Hardy recruited a small team of trusted officers to prepare quietly. They stockpiled supplies, studied basic survival skills, and even practiced meditation to “sense mana,” feeling slightly foolish but committed to being ready for anything.
Months passed, and Hardy continued his work, the manuscript always in his thoughts. Reports of unusual occurrences increased, but there was still no concrete evidence to convince his superiors. Scotland Yard had more pressing matters.
One evening, as Hardy was leaving the office, a colleague in the Metropolitan Police Service called him.
“Thomas, we’ve been getting reports of strange activity,” his colleague said. “People claim to have seen statues moving, and there are reports of ghostly figures in the Underground. It’s all very odd. Do you know anything about this?”
Hardy’s heart raced. “I might. Please send me the details. And... be prepared for anything.”
As he reviewed the information, Hardy realized the phenomena matched the predictions in the manuscript. He knew he had to act, even without official support.
The next day, he gathered his secret team. “It’s happening,” he told them. “We need to be ready.”
When the first mana wave hit London, it manifested as a rolling fog that turned the Thames into a swirling vortex of light. As panic engulfed the city, Hardy’s team was ready, their preparation paying off as they helped establish safe zones and manage the chaos.
Thompson found Hardy coordinating rescue efforts near the Tower of London, now glowing with an otherworldly light.
“I never imagined... How did you know?” she asked, her voice filled with awe and regret.
A massive, mana-mutated creature emerged from the Thames, cutting short Hardy’s reply. It looked like a cross between a sea serpent and a London bus, its scales gleaming with the reflected light of the transformed river.
“Later,” he said, drawing a sword he’d acquired ‘just in case.’ “First, we’ve got a city to save.”
Hardy couldn’t help but think of the manuscript as they faced the creature. Despite the clear warnings, they dismissed them as fantasy. Now, they were living the reality.
“Listen carefully,” Hardy shouted to his team over the creature’s roar. “Remember what we practiced. Focus on sensing the mana around you. It’s our best chance against these beings.”
As the creature lunged towards them, Hardy felt a surge of energy course through his body, and the sword in his hand glowed as he activated his new ability.
With a cry that echoed with determination and a hint of exhilaration, Hardy led the charge against the monster, stepping firmly into the new reality around them.
Daniel Reynolds
In the heart of Langley, Virginia, deep within the labyrinthine halls of CIA headquarters, Senior Analyst Daniel Reynolds’s job was sifting through a mountain of reports, intelligence briefings, and intercepted communications. Daniel was a seasoned veteran with over two decades of experience in intelligence analysis, specializing in unconventional threats. His reputation for connecting seemingly unrelated dots had earned him a seat at some of the most classified meetings in the agency.
One day, when he arrived at work, he found a thick envelope with a sticky note on his desk. The note read: “First read Side Story 12 - A Call for Help, then chapters 110-118. After you’re convinced, read the rest of the manuscript.” The note didn’t have a signature and didn’t recognize the handwriting, but he followed the instructions.
His mental alarm bells started ringing as he read the side story. A deep sense of dread seeped into his bones as he moved on to the chapters about the rescue. The account described what had happened at Area 51, told from the perspective of those who carried out the rescue. No one outside the base should have known that level of detail—it was unnerving. Many people knew that someone had disabled all the equipment, as if by an EMP, the sandstorm, and the stolen weapons. It was difficult to conceal due to the need to resupply the base with new gear and the difficulty of hiding a paper trail for that much equipment. But the army closely guarded the other details—the invisibility of the criminals, the tattoos on the Traveler’s body, the light show witnessed in the sky, and the singing reported by two soldiers. Anyone could have known these details only if they had been there that night and not at the base. All personnel at the base had signed strict NDAs, with the threat of court-martial if any of them leaked what had happened.
He became convinced that the criminal who rescued the Traveler had written the manuscript and grew curious to see what else they had to say. As he began reading from the prologue, he felt bewildered. Why did he need to read this? Was he supposed to pity the criminal who rescued the Traveler? While he sympathized with John’s grief over the death of his wife and the years he spent in the foster care system, he didn’t feel it was his concern or that it required any action on his part.
When he reached the part about the integration of Earth, everything clicked, and his concern deepened. As he read on and discovered that the mana levels were steadily rising, his alarm grew with every page. They needed to prepare—immediately, if not sooner.
Daniel knew he needed to talk to someone who would understand the gravity of what he had just read. He picked up the phone and called his superior, Deputy Director Emily Hargrove.
“Emily, it’s Daniel. I need to see you right away. It’s urgent.”
After fifteen minutes, Daniel sat in Emily’s office with the document on the table between them.
“This better be good, Daniel. What have you got?” Emily asked, leaning back in her chair.
Daniel took a deep breath. “It’s a report about the integration of Earth into a mana system. I know it sounds wild, but hear me out. Remember the incident at Area 51? The ones where all the base electronics died?”
Emily nodded, her expression serious. “Of course.”
“Well,” Daniel continued, “this document describes exactly what happened that night. Only somebody who was there could know about the prisoner and the unexplained unconsciousness of the soldiers. The sandstorm and the missing weapons. It also details rising energy levels, technological failures, even the appearance of entities from other dimensions.”
He handed her the chapter “Opportunities and Dangers in Worlds Undergoing Integration” and said, “Read this. This is the most important part of the manuscript.”
Emily leaned forward, scanning the document. “You’re saying this is real? That we’re about to experience something similar on a global scale?”
“Yes,” Daniel replied. “I believe this document is genuine. The level of detail, the consistency with what happened that night, and the knowledge we gathered from the first Traveler—it’s all too accurate to be dismissed as mere fiction.”
Emily sat back, considering his words. “If this is true, we need to act. But we can’t just go to the President with this. We must build a case, gather evidence, and subtly influence the right people to start preparations.”
Over the next few months, Daniel and Emily worked tirelessly, pulling in favors and leveraging their contacts across various government agencies. They discreetly shared the document with trusted allies in the Department of Defense, the National Security Agency, and the Department of Homeland Security. They also tapped into their network of scientific advisors, enlisting experts in physics, engineering, and biology to analyze the implications of the integration process described in the manuscript.
Their efforts paid off. A growing number of influential figures took the threat seriously. The scientific analysis confirmed that the phenomena described in the document explained the latest strange occurrences on Earth. Given the new information, prominent individuals treated the threat with gravity. They re-evaluated the anomalies observed in recent years, such as unexplained technological failures, unusual energy readings, material instability, and weather phenomena.
With a solid foundation of evidence and support, Emily arranged a meeting with the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), James Cartwright. The DNI was a crucial ally; his influence could pave the way for a coordinated response across all intelligence and security agencies.
James listened carefully as Daniel and Emily presented their findings. He didn’t dismiss their claims, but he remained cautious.
“This is unprecedented,” James said after a long pause. “If what you’re saying is true, we could face a threat unlike any we’ve encountered. But we need to proceed carefully. The President will require concrete evidence before taking any action.”
“We understand,” Emily replied. “That’s why we’re here. We need your help gathering that evidence and laying the groundwork for a coordinated response. We can’t afford to be surprised.”
James nodded. “I’ll see what I can do. But remember, we need to keep this under wraps. Panic is the last thing we need right now.”
Daniel and Emily’s work paid off, thanks to the DNI’s support. Government departments made minute operational modifications. The Department of Defense started conducting drills for major technical breakdowns and increased its emergency supplies. Seeking indications of increasing Mana levels, the NSA improved its surveillance of world energy data and anomalies.
The Department of Homeland Security started a series of campaigns emphasizing the importance of emergency preparedness while concealing the actual threat. They also subtly raised money for studies on alternate energy sources and technology capable of running apart from the existing grid.
As the evidence accumulated, the moment came to brief the President and discreetly begin preparations. Along with the DNI, Daniel and Emily showed their results in a secure briefing room at the White House.
“Mr. President,” Emily began, “what we’re about to share with you is highly classified and potentially world-changing. We have credible intelligence suggesting that Earth will be integrated into a network of mana-infused worlds.”
The President looked skeptical but gestured for them to continue. Over the next hour, Daniel and Emily laid out their case, presenting the document, the scientific analysis, and the corroborating evidence from various intelligence sources.
When they finished, the President sat in silence, processing the information. Finally, he spoke.
“This is... extraordinary. If what you’re saying is true, we need to be ready. But we also need to be careful not to cause a public panic. What do you propose?”
“We recommend a multi-tiered approach,” Daniel replied. “The initial step is to continue with the ongoing subtle preparations. We should allocate more resources to enhance emergency preparedness, research alternative energy sources, and closely monitor global anomalies. Second, we should form a task force of experts in various fields to develop strategies for dealing with the integration process. The third step is to have a plan to notify the public if the situation requires it.”
The President nodded slowly. “Make it happen. And keep me informed every step of the way.”
With the President’s support, the task force included top scientists, military strategists, intelligence analysts, and emergency response experts. Meeting regularly in secure locations, they collaboratively developed detailed plans to address each stage of the integration process mentioned in the manuscript.
They investigated methods to reduce the influence of increasing mana levels on technology, created procedures to handle mana beasts and monsters, and conducted studies on safeguards against supernatural beings. The task force also investigated the potential of utilizing mana, seeking ways to transform the potential danger into a chance for progress.
Aware of the integration process’s global impact, Daniel and Emily collaborated with their counterparts in allied nations to exchange information and coordinate their actions. They formed secure lines of communication with intelligence agencies, scientific organizations, and military commands worldwide.
The response was mixed. Several countries questioned the accuracy of the information, viewing it as uncertain at best. However, nations with a history of unexplained phenomena and confidential experiments responded with an increased willingness to cooperate. Gradually, a loose coalition of these nations formed, united by the shared goal of preparing for the unknown.
As the integration process loomed ever closer, the world quietly prepared. Governments prepared by stockpiling supplies, strengthening defenses, and providing basic survival skills training to their populations. Day and night, scientists and engineers tirelessly collaborated to create innovative technologies capable of operating in a world infused with mana.
The group, including Daniel, Emily, and the remaining members of the task force, scrutinized the situation, prepared to take immediate action. They understood that, no matter how hard they tried, the integration process would inevitably come with unforeseen challenges and uncertainties.
One fateful night, the first signs of the integration process became apparent. Unusual energy readings spiked around the globe, and reports of technological failures and strange phenomena poured in. Planes fell from the sky, cars stopped, and the electrical grid collapsed. The task force sprang into action, coordinating responses and making sure they put their preparations to good use.
After the mana waves passed and some technology came back online, the world watched in awe and trepidation as the integration process unfolded. Governments issued urgent advisories, urging people to stay indoors and follow emergency protocols calmly. The President addressed the nation, offering reassurance that they were ready and equipped to confront the upcoming challenges.
In the months and years that followed, the integration process transformed the world in both expected and unimaginable ways. The mana levels have become stable, and humanity has adapted to the new reality of a world infused with mana.
Daniel, Emily, and the rest of the task force persisted in their work, guiding the global community through the transition and making sure the preparations were successful. Faced with the unknown, they displayed courage and determination, effectively turning a potential disaster into a chance to grow and move forward.
As the world found its new balance, Daniel pondered on the journey that had led them to this point. The seemingly unbelievable document turned out to be an important warning that they acted upon just in the nick of time. With humanity fully embracing its new reality, Daniel felt confident that they were prepared for what lay ahead.

Outstanding. I really like the ancestral magic angle. There are alot of cultures around the world with a history of things like shamans and witch doctors and wizards to make those viable classes. The Mexico and Japan ancestral sites powering up with mana and awakening bloodline powers is pretty sweet too. I'd imagine American Indians would be part of that too since they have a rich shamanistic cultural background. Well done.

I hope the document becomes part of the history books in that John’s name becomes an influential figure. His story, the life he lived in what he done. It would be cool if that if at any point ever John ends up back at earth he’s like a celebrity to them.

Yeah, here I focused more on the preparations.

I’m a bit sad. We didn’t see the classes. These people gained since I liked seeing those new unique classes because we don’t see many that often. The only classes we’ve experienced with other ones Maya Al and John have with the occasional ones they would talk about.
