Eileen Gu has the same syndrome as many of my friends who went to ivies where everything that they've tried has generally worked out and nothing that bad has ever happened to them (due to talent mostly but also luck). When these people do something that attracts negative attention they genuinely don't understand why people have problems with it and can't accept the criticism.

What Eileen Gu meant when she said "you can control your thoughts" isn't that you can control them, but you can choose which thoughts influence who you become. In the West, people identify their thoughts with who they are. You are your thoughts. In Eastern contemplative practices (Buddhism, Taoism, etc.), thoughts are not taken on as a part of who you are, but something you observe in yourself. You can control or choose which thoughts take on a life within you. For example, you can choose to let your negative thoughts run your life, or you can observe them as they pass by. This is the whole premise of meditation. You sit and observe your thoughts, you don't follow them, you allow them to pass. When you do that, it allows you to have less attachment to those thoughts. If you take what she said in that context, she means once you realize you can control which thoughts influence your life and which ones don't, you can achieve anything. She is less inhibited by negative thought influence. It's just her lack of articulation.
