🕑 Added 2025-07-17 16:52:16 +0000 UTCChapter 106: Drunken Itachi and Orochimaru’s Frustration
After leaving a crow with Tenzō, Itachi began his journey back.
Why leave a crow? Well, that stemmed from Sarutobi Hiruzen’s previous actions.
Itachi expected to have some free time for a while, leaving the tug-of-war between Kirigakure and Konoha to play out.
Of course, the people in Konoha weren’t likely to remain calm.
Though Gai and Kurenai didn’t have much status or strong backing, Sarutobi Asuma’s deep affection for Kurenai meant things could escalate if Hiruzen made any reckless moves.
---
A few days later, Itachi returned to Orochimaru’s base.
Orochimaru had been locked in his laboratory the entire time, showing no sign of emerging anytime soon.
Resigned, Itachi pulled out the scroll Tenzō had given him and began studying it.
Since it was a gift, Itachi activated his Sharingan to copy the techniques inscribed on the scroll. Then, he set it ablaze, destroying the original.
Two weeks of intense ninjutsu research later, Orochimaru finally emerged.
“How are things progressing?”
Looking at the slightly haggard but visibly exhilarated Orochimaru, Itachi asked softly.
“Kakashi still hasn’t shown any reaction. I’ve successfully extracted the Kaguya clan’s Shikotsumyaku serum. As for the Ryūmyaku, the team hasn’t returned yet.”
Noticing that Itachi, who usually ate with gusto, had barely touched his food and was already asking questions, Orochimaru put down his chopsticks and gave a straightforward response.
“I see... Forget waiting for Kakashi. Let’s proceed with implanting Hashirama’s cells directly.”
Hearing Orochimaru’s update, Itachi, who had nearly been overwhelmed on his last mission, spoke decisively.
---
“Huh? Aren’t you going to wait? If Kakashi successfully integrates Hashirama’s cells first, your success rate will increase significantly.”
Orochimaru was puzzled by Itachi’s decision.
With Kakashi’s progress looking promising, waiting for his success would eliminate several uncertainties, significantly lowering the risks.
Orochimaru couldn’t understand why Itachi was in such a rush.
“No need to wait. I trust your skills.”
Meeting Orochimaru’s gaze, Itachi shook his head and replied earnestly.
In truth, Itachi could have undergone the procedure as soon as he unlocked the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan.
However, back then, the situation was unclear, and Itachi didn’t fully trust Orochimaru to handle such a delicate procedure without ulterior motives.
Now, having gained faith in Orochimaru, Itachi saw no reason to delay further.
His recent encounter with Gai had shown him that he still fell short of the strongest combatants.
There was no room for complacency; the sooner the implantation was done, the better the results.
If he could enhance his other chakra natures in the process, it would be an added bonus.
Moreover, Itachi needed time to study and prepare. Crafting Truth-Seeking Orbs in the future would require a solid foundation, something far from simple.
---
“Very well.”
Seeing the determination in Itachi’s eyes, Orochimaru couldn’t bring himself to refuse.
He didn’t fully understand what was driving Itachi.
But for a request from Itachi, Orochimaru was willing to comply without hesitation.
“Thank you. Let’s have a drink.”
Hearing Orochimaru’s agreement, Itachi smiled slightly before suggesting they share a drink.
He wasn’t sure what the future held after the Hashirama cell transplant.
After all, it had taken Madara considerable time to awaken the Rinnegan following his own fusion with Hashirama’s cells.
For Itachi, even with the procedure, the prerequisites for awakening the Rinnegan might not align.
Reflecting on the long road ahead, Itachi felt his decision was sound.
---
“Heh, sounds good. I haven’t had a drink in ages. A little relaxation is just what I need.”
Orochimaru readily agreed to Itachi’s suggestion.
With a subtle signal to a servant, the attendant promptly left and returned carrying a large sake jar.
Since they had an entire jar, the two opted to forgo cups and instead drank from bowls.
“Does this sake have a story behind it?”
The two drank together, and after finishing the wine in his cup, Itachi muttered softly.
“This wine has no story.”
In response to Itachi’s question, Orochimaru wiped the wine stain from the corner of his mouth with his sleeve and spoke gently.
“Then why have we been drinking this same wine every time, without ever changing it?”
Hearing Orochimaru’s words, Itachi was puzzled.
It was always this wine.
…
“Itachi, have you forgotten? This is the wine we drank the first time we met in Amegakure. I thought it was good, so I saved some.”
Hearing this, Orochimaru gave an awkward smile. Watching the servant refill Itachi’s cup, he raised his own and gestured for Itachi to do the same.
Itachi was momentarily stunned by Orochimaru’s words.
Then, he raised his cup, clinked it against Orochimaru’s, and downed it in one gulp.
“Seems I have a bad memory. This wine really is good…”
After finishing the second cup, a rosy blush appeared on Itachi’s face. He apologized somewhat sheepishly.
…
“You’re a busy man. Forgetting is normal.”
Orochimaru chuckled lightly, waved his sleeve to dismiss the servant, and personally picked up the wine jar. Standing up, he bent over and poured wine into Itachi’s cup.
Seeing Itachi’s cup now filled to the brim, Orochimaru smiled contentedly.
“Well then…”
Itachi was at a loss for words in response to Orochimaru.
“Come on, let’s continue…”
Hearing Itachi’s slightly awkward words, Orochimaru raised his cup again, arching a brow as he gestured for Itachi to pick up his.
“Uh… this…”
Hesitant, Itachi slowly picked up his cup. He started to say something but stopped midway.
Realizing it was his idea to drink, he steeled himself.
Bracing himself, he clinked cups with Orochimaru and drained it in one go.
…
After three large cups, Itachi’s eyes began to glaze over. Drinking like this, without even time to eat, was starting to get to him.
He began to regret suggesting they drink in the first place.
Orochimaru, noticing Itachi’s state, wiped the corner of his mouth as if nothing had happened.
The difference in their tolerance was clear.
Watching Itachi pick at his food, Orochimaru showed no mercy, getting up to pour more wine.
“How about we switch to smaller cups?”
After downing yet another cup, Itachi’s tone betrayed a hint of defeat.
Not much of a drinker to begin with, and drinking so rarely, he was already starting to feel out of it.
At Itachi’s admission of surrender, Orochimaru stood up to pour more wine, a smile playing on his lips as he gently shook his head.
It was as if he were saying, “I’ve only just begun; how could you quit now?”
…
After a few more rounds, Itachi, chopsticks in hand, struggled to pick up any food.
Orochimaru shook his head as if to say, “You’re bad at this, yet you still wanted to drink.”
Taking the chopsticks on the table, Orochimaru lightly picked up a piece of meat and placed it in Itachi’s bowl.
Without even having touched his own food, Orochimaru had nearly rendered Itachi incapable.
“Why are you in such a hurry to transplant Hashirama’s cells? Did you run into trouble on your last mission?”
Watching Itachi, now somewhat dazed, chew the meat Orochimaru had placed in his bowl, Orochimaru asked softly, his voice slightly hypnotic.
It turned out Orochimaru had intentionally gotten Itachi drunk to get information.
He didn’t understand why Itachi, who had more secure opportunities ahead if he waited, had made such a seemingly rash decision.
Orochimaru knew that if he asked directly, Itachi wouldn’t answer. So when Itachi suggested drinking, Orochimaru seized the chance, using only a fraction of his full drinking capacity to get Itachi drunk.
…
Hearing Orochimaru’s question, a flicker of clarity appeared in Itachi’s hazy gaze.
“No particular reason. I just feel confident now and don’t want to wait any longer.”
Itachi’s muddled response was typical of someone drunk.
“Hmm? Why the sudden confidence? Wouldn’t it be better to wait until Kakashi finishes?”
Orochimaru frowned slightly, failing to notice the ripple in Itachi’s eyes.
Itachi’s gaze grew clear as he watched Orochimaru idly manipulate a piece of meat with his chopsticks.
“I trust you.”
Itachi stood up, fixing his eyes on Orochimaru, who had turned to meet his gaze. He spoke softly before turning to leave.
…
“Heh, interesting… I’ll be ready. You should get some rest.”
Orochimaru, momentarily puzzled by Itachi’s clear eyes, smiled faintly as he watched Itachi’s retreating figure.
Itachi didn’t look back but raised his right hand, waving it casually as he left.
Only after Itachi’s silhouette disappeared did Orochimaru withdraw his gaze with a touch of melancholy.
He couldn’t outwit Itachi and couldn’t figure out what he was thinking.
For someone who prided himself on his intellect, this was hard to accept.
Yet, hearing Itachi’s words of trust and seeing the sincerity in his eyes, Orochimaru’s heart felt warm, even touched.
…
Chapter 107: The Battle of the Cells
The next day.
When Itachi woke up, he saw Orochimaru busy at work.
"Awake?"
Noticing Itachi, Orochimaru paused for a moment before speaking softly.
"Yes, I'm awake," Itachi replied with a slight nod.
---
"The Hashirama cells you requested are ready. When should we begin?"
Orochimaru spoke bluntly.
"Let’s start now."
Hearing this, Itachi smiled.
His eyes narrowed slightly, and the corners of his mouth curled upward.
Itachi appreciated Orochimaru's straightforward attitude.
"Have some breakfast first; there's no need to rush," Orochimaru said with a faint smile.
Seeing Itachi's relaxed demeanor relieved some of Orochimaru's worry. If Itachi had shown any sign of facing this as though it were a death sentence, Orochimaru wouldn't have proceeded.
Confidence has a way of spreading to those around you—it’s a simple truth.
---
Hearing Orochimaru's suggestion, Itachi had no objections and nodded lightly in agreement.
After all, if the procedure turned out to incapacitate him like Kakashi’s ordeal, who knew when he’d get another decent meal?
Pleased with Itachi's understanding, Orochimaru said no more. He removed the lab coat-like garment he was wearing and joined Itachi in the dining hall for breakfast.
The two shared a harmonious atmosphere.
---
Itachi enjoyed his breakfast thoroughly, savoring every bite, while Orochimaru ate slowly and methodically, allowing Itachi plenty of time.
Orochimaru’s thoughts mirrored Itachi's. Neither of them knew how long the upcoming procedure would take.
---
After breakfast.
Itachi lay down in the room he often stayed in.
The once-simple space was now filled with various medical instruments.
Compared to Kakashi's makeshift setup with casually hung IV bags, Itachi’s room resembled a luxury hospital suite.
The contrast was stark.
As Itachi lay down, Orochimaru picked up a massive syringe filled with a green liquid.
"Don’t worry, I won’t inject this all at once. We’ll do it in stages. I’ll ensure you gain this power as safely and comfortably as possible," Orochimaru explained with a sly smile, noticing Itachi's fixed gaze on the needle.
"O-okay…" Itachi stammered, swallowing nervously as he eyed the intimidating syringe.
---
Time passed.
Itachi was soon covered in a network of strange medical devices.
Numerous syringes had been inserted into his body.
Gradually, he felt his eyelids growing heavier. Before long, he fell into a deep sleep.
Orochimaru continued working tirelessly around him.
Once Itachi was sound asleep, Orochimaru picked up the large syringe set aside earlier.
He carefully injected a small amount of the green liquid into Itachi’s nutrient IV.
Then, taking a smaller syringe from his toolbox, he mixed two separate substances together.
His expression grew serious as he monitored Itachi's physical condition, glancing frequently at the equipment tracking his vital signs.
This approach was worlds apart from how he had treated Kakashi, where one large injection had sufficed.
The difference was glaring.
---
Several days passed, and Itachi remained unconscious.
Orochimaru, on the other hand, hadn’t closed his eyes for days. His bloodshot gaze was unnerving.
“Ding!”
The sound of the equipment snapped Orochimaru out of his daze.
He grabbed the large syringe nearby, but this time, instead of injecting it into the nutrient IV, he moved toward the machine connected to Itachi.
Slowly and carefully, he began injecting the Hashirama cells.
His expression was somber as he meticulously controlled the dosage.
---
A piercing alarm from the machines monitoring Itachi’s heart rate suddenly blared.
Orochimaru ignored the noise, keeping his eyes fixed on Itachi’s face.
This was the most critical moment. From here on out, Itachi was on his own.
There was nothing more Orochimaru could do to help.
The preparatory work he had done earlier was already everything he could manage.
Of course, if Itachi were truly in danger, he still had a method to immediately render the Hashirama cells invading Itachi's body useless.
However, if it came to that, it would signify a failed transplantation.
To attempt another Hashirama cell transplantation, he would have to wait several more years—time needed to address and eliminate the virus strain he developed to destroy the Hashirama cells.
...
Compared to the tormented Orochimaru, things were much easier for Itachi.
At the very beginning of the process, he had already fallen asleep.
Later, Orochimaru injected a small, controlled amount of Hashirama cells into Itachi’s wrists and ankles.
The Hashirama cells did not spread aggressively or consume Itachi’s cells.
Instead, they were extraordinarily docile and began to merge with Itachi's cells.
This was the result of Orochimaru’s extensive research.
By doing this, Itachi’s body cells could recognize and adapt to the Hashirama cells.
...
However, the Hashirama cells fused this way lacked the full potential of their original power, so they couldn’t be used continuously. This method was only effective at the initial stage.
After several days of preparation, Orochimaru moved on to the main procedure.
It was as if a battle had broken out inside Itachi’s body.
The wild and aggressive Hashirama cells began acting within him.
“It’s up to you now.”
Watching Itachi’s heart rate gradually stabilize on the monitor, Orochimaru directly injected the remaining Hashirama cells into Itachi’s body without further filtering or processing.
...
“You are not allowed to close your eyes. Take turns watching over him. If anything unusual happens, notify me immediately.”
Orochimaru summoned a few subordinates and instructed them sternly.
The subordinates were alarmed, seeing the erratic fluctuations in Itachi's heart rate on the monitors. It was as if the numbers were dancing wildly, and they were utterly panicked.
Unlike his nervous subordinates, Orochimaru was well aware that this was just the beginning.
To gain extraordinary power, one must pay an equivalent price.
For now, he needed to rest to ensure that he would be in peak condition to address any complications during the next critical stage.
...
Inside Itachi’s body, a conflict similar to last time erupted again.
Compared to before, this time the situation was far worse.
The Hashirama cells were overwhelmingly powerful, infused with Asura’s chakra, Sage energy, and Hashirama’s will.
Although leaderless, their quality far surpassed Itachi’s own cells.
However, Itachi had the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and with his strong will, he was barely able to resist the invasion.
Since Itachi’s strength exceeded Kakashi’s, the dosage of Hashirama cells given to him was several times greater than Kakashi’s.
This was determined based on the data Orochimaru had gathered during his previous examination of Itachi.
...
Itachi’s cells struggled to engulf the invading Hashirama cells.
As a foreign force, the Hashirama cells showed no regard for the fact that they were inside Itachi’s body. They erupted with unrestrained power, showing no hesitation to damage his body.
However, as time passed, Itachi’s cells began to incorporate the traits of the Hashirama cells through the process of engulfing them.
What was once a losing battle now began to shift slightly in Itachi's favor.
Similarly, the Hashirama cells absorbed characteristics of Itachi’s cells as they consumed them, allowing them to draw energy from his body for sustenance. This only made them more ferocious, locking the situation in a deadlock.
Chapter 108: Symbiosis Mode and Complete Devouring Mode
Time passed quickly, and before anyone realized it, Itachi had been asleep for six months.
Lying on the bed, Itachi’s fingers twitched slightly.
“Orochimaru-sama, the guest is awake!”
Compared to the sleeping Itachi, the people taking shifts watching him had endured great mental exhaustion.
Hearing his subordinate’s call, Orochimaru froze mid-action as he was about to pick up some food.
In the next moment, the half-eaten meal was abandoned on the table, and his figure vanished.
“Ugh, this sour feeling...”
Itachi’s eyes slowly opened, staring blankly at the ceiling for a moment.
“You’re awake.”
Hearing Itachi’s groggy complaint, Orochimaru didn’t answer directly but chuckled lightly.
“Yeah, I’m awake. How long was I out?”
Hearing Orochimaru’s voice, Itachi’s hazy gaze gradually became clearer.
“Six months. Not too fast, not too slow. You woke up earlier than Kakashi did.”
Orochimaru walked to Itachi’s bedside, sitting down as he gently removed the tubes and monitoring equipment from Itachi’s body.
“How am I doing now?”
With Orochimaru’s support, Itachi sat up.
After a moment of silence, he asked softly.
“Your situation is a bit complicated...”
Orochimaru’s tone turned somber as he responded to Itachi’s question.
“I can feel it...”
Itachi replied softly, sensing that his ocular powers and chakra were constantly suppressing a force within him.
The relationship between the two wasn’t one of fusion or symbiosis.
“Something seems to have gone wrong. Right now, your own cells have gained the upper hand, which is why you’ve been able to wake up. I spent six months investigating, but I still can’t pinpoint the issue. Do you know what’s causing this?”
Hearing Itachi fall silent, Orochimaru’s gaze became somewhat apologetic as he spoke.
“It’s not your fault; this is something I did to myself...”
Itachi smiled faintly at Orochimaru’s words.
In truth, he had discovered a method to obtain Wood Release abilities.
By relying on the strength of his body and willpower, Itachi could resist the oppressive will of Hashirama’s cells, allowing his own cells to battle and devour them. Through this process, both sets of cells would eventually exist as "same origin, different roots." Itachi referred to this as Symbiosis Mode.
Examples included Madara’s chest-bound Hashirama face and Obito’s half-body transformation.
But Itachi wasn’t content with sharing his body.
If it were only Hashirama’s cells, that might be tolerable—but if Ashura’s will was mixed in, the thought unsettled him deeply.
Thus, there was no chance of reconciliation between his cells and Hashirama’s. Itachi resolved to completely devour Hashirama’s cells, absorbing all their properties, including Wood Release and the Ōtsutsuki chakra associated with Ashura.
“How did this happen? Kakashi’s case turned out fine. Why is yours so different?”
Orochimaru asked, puzzled by Itachi’s methods.
Leaning back against the headboard, Itachi explained his hypothesis to Orochimaru.
“Symbiosis Mode... Complete Devouring Mode?”
After hearing Itachi’s explanation, Orochimaru fell silent, momentarily stunned.
It was his first time hearing such a perspective from a subject.
“Heh, Itachi, as expected of you. Your willpower is truly extraordinary.”
After a pause, Orochimaru nodded in understanding and admiration.
Wood Release was right within reach, yet Itachi chose the hardest path forward.
It should be noted that the amount of Hashirama’s cells injected into Itachi was enough to saturate his entire body.
In other words, Itachi was currently fighting a cellular-level battle against an entity as powerful as Hashirama himself.
“Heh, it might seem impressive, but the reality is far from it. My chakra is constantly suppressing Hashirama’s cells, slowly devouring them. However, the process is excruciatingly slow.”
Itachi spoke bitterly in response to Orochimaru’s words.
Though the situation was taxing, he did not regret his decision.
After hearing Itachi’s response, Orochimaru remained silent for a moment.
“You should eat something. You haven’t had a proper meal in six months; all your sustenance has been from nutrient fluids.”
Looking at Itachi’s slightly dispirited expression, Orochimaru spoke gently.
To be honest, if not for Itachi’s current mood, Orochimaru might have been delighted.
After all, Itachi’s insights had pulled back the veil of mystery surrounding Hashirama’s cells.
“So, how much of your strength can you use right now? And how long will it take to completely devour the Hashirama cells?”
The two sat at a table after Itachi had indulged in a hearty meal.
Orochimaru softly asked, "How much chakra can you still use now?"
"For now, I can barely use about three layers of chakra. But if my body loses this balance, Hashirama's cells will resurge," Itachi replied softly, putting down the chopsticks in his hand.
In truth, he could use less than one layer of his strength now, but he said that to avoid worrying Orochimaru.
However, once Hashirama’s cells were completely devoured, his strength would grow rapidly.
The chakra that had been suppressing Hashirama's cells would be released, and his power would increase exponentially.
But the process of fully devouring Hashirama's cells was unpredictable.
He knew it would take some time, but once it was done, he would become many times stronger than before.
Even now, his body had grown significantly stronger compared to before, and his chakra was increasing rapidly through the absorption of Hashirama's cells.
...
"Why don’t you rest for a few more years? Your cells have already gained the upper hand. It probably won’t take much longer before you can fully devour Hashirama’s cells. By then, your strength will grow geometrically," Orochimaru advised, seeing Itachi fall silent again.
Understanding Itachi’s current physical condition, Orochimaru could now tailor solutions to speed up the process significantly.
"Forget it. I’ve been lying down for six months, and it’s been unbearable. I’m done with resting," Itachi replied, shaking his head after hearing Orochimaru's suggestion.
"Then take some time to rest properly here. If there’s anything you need done, I’ll have someone handle it for you," Orochimaru offered, unfazed by Itachi’s refusal.
In his heart, he knew Itachi was inherently restless. Asking him to lie still was practically impossible.
...
"Oh, by the way, send someone to the Land of Whirlpools to find a shrine," Itachi suddenly said, ignoring Orochimaru's earlier remark and instead requesting him to send someone to retrieve the Shinigami mask.
The idea of staying idle here for years was ridiculous.
He needed something to do. Besides, in a little over a year, Sasuke would turn twelve.
It was time to bring Sasuke out.
Currently, Itachi had to spend several hours every day refining chakra just to replenish what he lost.
If he could get half of Kurama as a "battery," he wouldn’t have to worry about chakra logistics anymore.
"A shrine? The Land of Whirlpools has long been destroyed. How could there still be a shrine there?" Orochimaru asked in confusion after hearing Itachi's request.
Before its fall, the Land of Whirlpools had been a coveted treasure.
After its destruction, scavengers likely turned it upside down. It seemed unlikely that any intact shrine could still exist.
...
Itachi merely shook his head at Orochimaru’s skepticism, signaling for him to proceed without concern.
The actual process was more complicated, and this was just preparatory work.
He wasn’t sure if Orochimaru could handle it yet.
The last time, Itachi had already recreated the Reaper Death Seal technique. Now, all he needed was the mask, a complete Edo Tensei, and White Zetsu.
Seeing Itachi’s determined attitude, Orochimaru could only nod in agreement.
...
Chapter 109: A New Idea, Heading to Konoha
"By the way, your mention of the symbiosis and devouring modes reminded me of something."
After wrapping things up and instructing his subordinates to head to the Land of Whirlpools, Orochimaru seemed to recall something and spoke to Itachi.
"What is it?"
Hearing Orochimaru's words, Itachi, who was about to step outside to enjoy the sunshine, stopped in his tracks and turned to ask.
"I once conducted experiments with Hashirama cells, and one of the children survived. Based on what you said, it's quite possible that this child developed their own Wood Release. However, due to their poor innate talent..."
Seeing Itachi's curiosity, Orochimaru spoke softly.
Back then, funded by Danzo, he had many children participate in the experiment. The Hashirama cells injected during the experiment were minimal and highly diluted.
Listening to Itachi, Orochimaru realized that the survivor may have transitioned from symbiosis to the stage of devouring.
But because the child was so young and the Hashirama cells were so sparse, the acquired power was limited, good only for some basic greening abilities.
Looking at it now, after so many years, it was entirely possible that the child had completely absorbed the diluted Hashirama cells, granting their own cells the Wood Release Kekkei Genkai.
Of course, this was all just speculation.
Orochimaru had no interest in that child and had never bothered to investigate their condition in detail.
In his eyes, the child was merely a failed experiment.
For the Wood Release to manifest in such a feeble form was, in some ways, an insult to their predecessors...
---
After hearing Orochimaru’s words, Itachi understood what Orochimaru was getting at. He shook his head gently and said, "That experimental subject was a failure. There's no need to waste time on them. What I’ve gained is entirely different from what they received."
A figure of Yamato appeared in Itachi’s mind...
"Fine."
Hearing Itachi’s response, the light in Orochimaru’s eyes dimmed.
He had been considering finding that child to see if he could develop some sort of drug to help Itachi accelerate the absorption of Hashirama cells.
From Itachi’s words, it seemed Hashirama cells weren’t so simple.
They weren’t just an overbearing and powerful Kekkei Genkai.
---
Watching Orochimaru lower his head in thought once again, Itachi didn’t disturb him. Instead, he appeared lost in thought himself.
As he stepped out of the hideout, the sunlight bathing his body lifted his spirits, and he greedily soaked in the sun’s warmth.
"Naruto..."
Gazing at the bright sunlight that he could barely look at directly, Itachi murmured Naruto’s name as if recalling something.
Mentioning Naruto wasn’t a simple matter.
On one hand, Naruto was the current reincarnation of Asura.
On the other hand, Naruto possessed the Uzumaki physique.
The Uzumaki and Senju clans were distant relatives, and the Uzumaki were renowned for their extraordinary chakra reserves, vitality, and sensory abilities.
Of course, not every Uzumaki body exhibited all three traits.
---
With this in mind, Itachi couldn’t sit still. Whether it was Naruto, Yamato with his questionable utility, or his foolish little brother, Sasuke, Itachi decided he needed to make a trip to Konoha.
His steps headed straight toward Konoha, but after a few strides, he stopped. His current strength was significantly diminished...
A tinge of melancholy and hesitation flashed in Itachi’s eyes.
But gradually, they filled with determination.
He wasn’t going to cause trouble this time; it was merely a covert mission.
It was his acting skills being tested, not his strength.
Besides, this was the sort of thing best done sooner rather than later. Delaying it would only complicate matters.
Itachi understood all too well the principle that "delays breed danger."
---
Summoning a snake, Itachi sent it back to the hideout to inform Orochimaru before using Orochimaru's Facial Transformation Jutsu. His handsome face morphed into a plain, ordinary appearance.
The jutsu, which involved using another person's facial skin, was an extremely powerful disguise technique. Under normal circumstances, no one could see through it—flawless in every way.
As for the skin, Itachi wasn’t the type to do such cruel things himself. He had obtained it from Orochimaru six months ago, who kept it as a reserve supply.
When Itachi’s power wasn’t diminished, he would never have resorted to using such measures.
His distinctively handsome face and formidable strength left no need for such disguises.
---
"Itachi is heading to Konoha? What’s he going there for now?"
Hearing the small snake’s report, Orochimaru muttered to himself.
The snake could deliver messages but lacked the ability for dialogue.
Thinking about Itachi’s current weakened state, combined with the fact that he had stolen Danzo’s eyes and taken a copy of the Scroll of Seals during his last visit, Orochimaru furrowed his brow.
From Itachi’s words, it seemed he planned to stay in Konoha for a while.
This made Orochimaru quietly anxious.
---
However, when the image of Itachi and his always composed, calm demeanor came to mind, a sense of tranquility washed over me.
Itachi had always been so unflappable, as if nothing in the world could ever faze him.
This was undoubtedly an extraordinary kind of confidence.
“Sigh, I guess I’ve been worrying too much. I should focus on my own matters. After all, this body’s time is almost up. Should I try reincarnating as a woman this time? Maybe experience what it feels like to be a woman? Life is full of variety, after all.”
Pushing thoughts of Itachi aside, Orochimaru’s lips curled into a smile as he muttered to himself.
Clearly, he had thought of something amusing.
Of course, it was nothing more than a passing thought.
...
“Oh, right. I seem to have something good with me.”
Naturally, Itachi was unaware of Orochimaru’s musings.
After traveling for three hours straight, he found a sturdy tree trunk and sat down to rest.
The sun was blazing hot. Walking under the relentless sunlight for so long had become tiresome.
At first, he found it rather refreshing—after all, it had been half a year since he’d last walked in the sun.
Before long, Itachi pulled out a vest and mask, putting them on to alter his appearance completely.
He carried a standard-issue longsword on his back.
This was the uniform of Root.
He planned to find Danzo first. That old man was clever in certain areas, and Itachi intended to meet with him.
...
Before long, Itachi came across an adorable little creature.
By the riverbank, after some skillful movements,
Itachi wrapped the small animal in a large tree leaf and wet mud.
He dug a large pit, gathered some branches, and lit a fire. Once the flames reached the desired intensity,
he tossed the mud-wrapped animal into the fire.
He was preparing to make a beggar’s roast animal.
...
He covered the fire completely with dirt, stomping on it a few times to seal the heat.
After some time had passed, Itachi enjoyed his meal, wiping the oil from his lips.
He drank a few sips of the refreshing river water,
then put his mask back on, tidied his clothing, and left the area.
Only a messy scene was left behind on the riverbank.
The small fish in the river, sensing the absence of danger, swarmed toward the entrails Itachi had discarded downstream.
High above, a bird swooped down, skimming the river’s surface before soaring back into the sky with a fish clutched in its beak. Swallowing it whole, it let out a cheerful cry.
...
...
Chapter 110: Coexistence of Black and White
“Sir, you’re here!”
Itachi used the shortcut Orochimaru had shown him last time to directly enter the heart of Konoha.
Seeing Itachi remove his mask and disguise, Danzo stood up in shock and greeted him.
“What has happened in Konoha since I left?”
Looking at Danzo kneeling obediently before him, Itachi switched back to his disguised appearance.
...
Seeing that Itachi in front of him carried no killing intent, Danzo breathed a sigh of relief. If Itachi had intended to kill him, he’d have no choice but to bid farewell to this beautiful world.
“Nothing significant has happened since you left. Everything is as usual,” Danzo replied after a brief moment of thought.
In between, someone had caused trouble in Hiruzen Sarutobi’s office, attempting to pin the blame on him. Danzo, however, immediately joined forces with his old comrades like Koharu Utatane to pressure Hiruzen.
After all, since his Root division had been absorbed, targeting him would naturally provoke the others. They all understood the principle that "if one lip is gone, the teeth grow cold."
Once Danzo was dealt with, their turn would come.
In the end, Hiruzen had to let it go, assigning the blame to a death row inmate to conclude the matter hastily, avoiding deeper implications.
Such internal conflicts were common, so Danzo dared not mention them to Itachi.
...
“Oh, can you get me a position at the Ninja Academy? I plan to become a teacher and play around for a while.”
Looking at Danzo kneeling at his feet, Itachi asked with a hint of disdain.
His intent in joining the Ninja Academy was, of course, to get closer to Naruto. This method was straightforward and convenient.
Using other methods would be tricky due to the ANBU Hiruzen constantly assigned to monitor Naruto.
Given his current position inside the "lion’s den," Itachi preferred not to act recklessly.
“Uh... getting you into the Ninja Academy shouldn’t be an issue,” Danzo replied, relieved that Itachi’s request was relatively easy to fulfill.
If Itachi still needed his help, it meant he still held some value, which in turn extended his life a little longer.
...
“Oh? Getting into the Ninja Academy is that simple? Then I want to join Iruka’s class,” Itachi said, his interest piqued by Danzo’s response.
Danzo broke into a cold sweat.
“Ah... that... Sir, joining other classes wouldn’t be an issue. However, Iruka’s class is a different story. It’s Hiruzen Sarutobi’s pride and joy. He’d never allow me to place anyone there. Even if you manage to get in, Hiruzen wouldn’t trust anyone I send. You’d face constant surveillance and restrictions,” Danzo explained nervously.
If such a thing were possible, he’d have done it long ago.
Hiruzen tolerated him for two reasons: Danzo often handled the dirty work and bore the blame when needed, and Danzo knew Hiruzen’s boundaries and never crossed them to avoid enraging him.
...
“Oh, then arrange for me to join the class next door,” Itachi said after a moment of thought.
He figured being close by would suffice for now. After all, he was currently idle, and this could provide some amusement.
Besides, this wasn’t merely for fun. He was laying the groundwork for a larger plan and striving to grow stronger.
“Are you in a hurry, sir? It’s almost New Year’s. Entering suddenly might draw attention. It would be better to blend in when the new term starts after New Year’s. By then, joining the Ninja Academy would be less conspicuous and more likely to succeed. Hiruzen’s control over the village isn’t what it used to be,” Danzo suggested, trying to prove his usefulness.
...
“Fine, we’ll do it your way. Arrange a place for me to stay,” Itachi nodded, accepting Danzo’s suggestion without pressing further.
Haste often leads to mistakes, and patience was crucial.
After all, even Black Zetsu had endured thousands of years for a dream.
“Understood. What name should I use for your identification card? It’ll make things easier,” Danzo asked cautiously, relieved that Itachi was being cooperative.
If Itachi had insisted and his cover was blown, Danzo feared he’d be killed in retaliation.
...
“A name? Just call me...”
Itachi hesitated, his mind momentarily blank. Naming wasn’t his strong suit. The name "Blood Moon" he used previously had already taken all his creative energy.
He wasn’t particularly fond of adopting another clan’s surname either.
Still, considering his weakened strength and current plans, he consoled himself with the idea of enduring humiliation for the sake of greater goals.
“If you don’t want a name, a code name will work too,” Danzo suggested quickly, trying to be accommodating.
He figured it wouldn’t hurt to put in more effort to ensure everything went smoothly.
“Forget it. Call me Asura,” Itachi finally decided.
After pondering for a few minutes, Itachi remembered his objective for this mission. His furrowed brow relaxed, and he clapped his hands, speaking with a cheerful tone.
"Calling him Indra feels a bit off. Ashura is better."
Given how much time has passed, aside from Black Zetsu, probably no one in this world knows the meaning behind the name Ashura anymore.
Hearing Itachi's chosen name, Danzo was dumbfounded.
Such an old-fashioned and strange name! He took so long to think of it...
Even the random name Danzo had come up with, Shimura Goudan, sounded better.
If he weren’t afraid of provoking Itachi, he would have said it outright.
Itachi refused to use anyone else’s surname. Worst-case scenario, he could just use Danzo’s.
If it came to that, Shimura Danzo would gladly share the Shimura surname with Shimura Goudan.
Thankfully, Danzo didn’t act on that whim. If he had, Itachi might not have killed him, but Danzo certainly wouldn’t have gotten away unscathed.
Itachi’s patience for Danzo was zero.

When Itachi arrived at the residence with Danzo’s trusted subordinates, he was quietly astonished.
This old man was rich.
Not far from Konoha's central street stood a two-story house with a yard.
How much must this place be worth?
Lying on the soft bed, Itachi began refining his chakra.
---
The next day, wearing an unremarkable face, Itachi strolled around Konoha.
Although Konoha had its share of problems, it was far more prosperous compared to other places.
While Hiruzen Sarutobi had his faults, the villagers in Konoha were undeniably better off than those elsewhere.
At least here, the civilians' eyes sparkled with life and hope, their faces often adorned with smiles that could lift anyone’s spirits.
Elsewhere, civilians Itachi had seen were lifeless, their eyes dull, having long since lost hope in life.
Walking along a familiar yet strange street, Itachi followed the paths from his memory.
Familiar, because he still recognized some shop owners.
Strange, because the people who used to be here were gone—Shisui, his dear friend, and that little shadow who used to follow him everywhere.
One was his closest companion, the other secretly admired him. Compared to everyone else, these two had been the closest to Itachi.
---
“Auntie, I’ll take three skewers of dango.”
Stopping at a familiar stall, Itachi remembered how his past self had always walked by, weighed down by heavy thoughts.
Now, though, he too felt some bitterness in his heart.
So, he decided to have something sweet to ease the bitterness within.
“Coming right up, dear customer!”
The shopkeeper wrapped the skewers and handed them to him.
When she saw Itachi handing over the money with both hands, she was momentarily taken aback.
“Thank you.”
Itachi accepted the dango with both hands and softly expressed his gratitude.
---
“Wait…”
Watching his departing figure, the shopkeeper instinctively wanted to call out to him.
His actions and expression had triggered something in her memory.
Two young faces flashed through her mind.
“If they hadn’t died, they would’ve been about this age by now...”
“As members of the Uchiha clan, they were more polite than most ordinary people.”
She murmured to herself, her gaze lingering on Itachi’s back.
“Hey, old lady, what’re you spacing out for? You still running a business here or not? Gimme two skewers of dango!”
While she was lost in thought, a young man with a ninja headband approached her stall.
“That’ll be 500 ryō,” she said, handing him the skewers.
When the ninja picked up the skewers and was about to leave, she softly reminded him, her tone humble.
“Hetui... just 500 ryō, and you dare ask me to pay? See this? This is the symbol of a ninja. You want to keep your little stall running? Show some gratitude. If it weren’t for us protecting you people, you’d be cannon fodder on the battlefield by now.”
The young man spat on the ground beside the stall, sneering as he walked away with the dango.
---
“It’s okay. People like that are rare. The Hokage will surely punish wrongdoers like him... Besides, if it weren’t for them risking their lives to protect us, we wouldn’t have the good lives we have now... It’s only right...”
As the young man left, the shopkeeper mumbled to herself, her expression conflicted.
Some people stand tall with integrity, while others delight in bullying the weak.
The same holds true for civilians, ordinary ninjas, and clan ninjas alike.
In this world, light and darkness coexist.
The newly appointed guard units often turned a blind eye to such incidents.
The tragedy of the Uchiha clan was still fresh in everyone’s minds.
As long as no fights broke out, they wouldn’t intervene.
Besides, even they thought the young man had a point—500 ryō was nothing. Why should a noble ninja have to pay?
Paying would mean lowering themselves to the level of ordinary people.
