🕑 Added 2025-07-13 16:23:35 +0000 UTCChapter 86: A Conversation with Orochimaru
Seeing Kakashi as if he had found his faith again, Itachi felt a strange emotion welling up in his heart—something inexplicable and unclear.
The night passed without much conversation.
---
By the next day, after constant nurturing of his chakra, Kakashi's physical condition had improved significantly. He no longer needed Itachi to create a shadow clone to carry him.
However, his pace was still slightly slower than usual.
"Kakashi, my Sharingan seems to have evolved into a Mangekyō. Do you know why this happened?"
As they walked along the road, the air was heavy with silence.
Kakashi broke the quiet by asking.
"Hmm. In truth, it had evolved quite some time ago. You just hadn’t acknowledged it or fully awakened its power."
…
Itachi kept walking without stopping or looking back as he replied.
Kakashi fell silent at Itachi's words.
In the past, he had always been cautious when using the Sharingan left to him by Obito.
On one hand, he was afraid of damaging it.
On the other hand, he didn’t want to disgrace Obito’s legacy.
Not being an Uchiha himself, Kakashi naturally hadn’t received any guidance on how to use this power.
What outsiders knew about the Sharingan was scarce at best.
---
Due to their slow pace, it took them two days to reach Orochimaru’s hideout.
Unlike Kakashi, who was looking around with curiosity, Itachi relied on his memory to guide Kakashi deeper into the base.
"Itachi, you’ve returned..."
As the two entered the main hall, the large doors automatically opened, and Orochimaru’s voice echoed through the room.
Orochimaru’s tone was lazy and fatigued, yet carried an inexplicable excitement.
Hearing Orochimaru’s voice, Kakashi was slightly stunned and glanced at Itachi.
Noticing no reaction from Itachi, Kakashi’s surprise gradually subsided.
"Hmm, you’re done with your work?"
Upon hearing Orochimaru’s distinctive voice, Itachi quickened his pace, stepping into the hall and fixing his gaze in the direction of the voice.
Orochimaru was eating.
His snake-like pupils were bloodshot, and his hair was disheveled, giving him a haggard appearance.
---
"Oh? Kakashi... Have you turned rogue?"
Orochimaru, about to answer Itachi’s question, suddenly seemed intrigued, as though he had discovered something new.
"Yes, Lord Orochimaru."
Under Orochimaru’s gaze, Kakashi was reminded of his current allegiance alongside Itachi. Without hesitation, he reverted to addressing Orochimaru as “Lord.”
Orochimaru took a long, thoughtful look at Kakashi before smiling faintly.
This brat seems to have changed quite a bit.
But even so, his incomplete Sharingan still fails to catch my eye...
Kakashi, who no longer covered his Sharingan with a headband, now displayed it openly.
Although he couldn’t deactivate it, which made him look a bit odd, it wasn’t entirely out of place.
---
Itachi, noticing the subtle exchange of glances between Orochimaru and Kakashi, walked over to Orochimaru and sat down. Without hesitation, he began eating from Orochimaru’s plate.
"Itachi, are you that hungry? My servants are preparing food; there’s no need to rush."
Orochimaru smiled faintly, seemingly indulgent toward Itachi’s actions.
"Do you have any subordinates skilled in medical ninjutsu? Have someone tend to Kakashi’s injuries."
Mouth full of food, Itachi spoke indistinctly.
"Oh? Kakashi is injured?"
Orochimaru raised an eyebrow, surprised by Itachi’s words. Without further questions, he rose to make the arrangements.
---
"Get treated first. I’ll handle everything else."
Seeing Kakashi, who seemed a bit tense and curious about his surroundings, Itachi spoke softly.
"Alright. Thank you..."
At Itachi’s words, Kakashi nodded slightly in acknowledgment.
It wasn’t long before Orochimaru arranged for someone to take Kakashi away.
“Itachi, can you tell me about anything interesting that happened? Kakashi joining you as a rogue ninja is quite unbelievable.”
The hall was soon left with just the two of them. Orochimaru asked with interest.
“Nothing much. But I’ll need to trouble you to enhance his abilities. My idea is to first create a serum that gives Kakashi the Uchiha Clan’s bloodline, and then inject him with Hashirama’s cells.”
Hearing Orochimaru’s words, Itachi didn’t feel like offering any explanations. Instead, he softly shared his plan to modify Kakashi.
“Giving him the Uchiha Clan’s bloodline isn’t difficult, but Hashirama’s cells…”
Orochimaru appeared slightly puzzled upon hearing Itachi.
He couldn’t help but feel that Itachi’s interest in Hashirama’s cells was unusually intense.
…
“Hashirama’s cells are indeed powerful. Most people naturally cannot withstand them, nor can they fully unlock their potential,” Itachi explained calmly in response to Orochimaru’s surprised reaction.
“Is that so? But the power of Hashirama’s cells is too wild. If someone injects them carelessly, they could turn into wood. And the process is irreversible—I can’t think of a way to stop it.”
As Orochimaru spoke, experimental data flashed through his mind.
“How are your experiments with the Shikotsumyaku and Byakugan combined with Hashirama’s cells coming along?”
Itachi suspected Orochimaru’s progress was lacking; otherwise, he wouldn’t seem so concerned.
“The cloned test subjects all suffered from explosive failures… So I decided to take a break and regroup.”
Orochimaru waved his hand casually in response to Itachi’s inquiry.
“You really…”
Itachi let out a sigh of exasperation at Orochimaru’s words.
…
“Itachi, do you have any better ideas?”
Orochimaru smiled faintly despite Itachi’s mild irritation.
“Orochimaru, many times, cloned bodies aren’t the solution, you know~”
Itachi didn’t hesitate to share his thoughts in response to Orochimaru’s question.
“You’re suggesting human experimentation? But cloned bodies are almost identical to humans, right? If the transplants fail, doesn’t that just mean there’s a problem with the technique, not something else?”
Orochimaru seemed unbothered as he discussed his technical shortcomings after hearing Itachi’s reply.
…
“Orochimaru, have you ever considered that the reason why Hashirama Senju, the God of Shinobi, was so powerful wasn’t just his physical body? More importantly, his unwavering conviction and mental fortitude matched his immense strength. Spiritual power is also an incredibly formidable force.”
Itachi’s explanation introduced a new perspective on the human body.
“You’re saying the failures in transplanting Hashirama’s cells aren’t due to technique but rather the will within those cells? That only someone with a will as strong as or stronger than Hashirama’s can subdue the cells and make them their own?”
Orochimaru’s eyes lit up after hearing Itachi’s explanation.
He recalled past failures in Wood Release experiments and realized that the issue might not lie in density, compatibility, or ratios.
“But Hashirama fought his way out of the Warring States period. Who else could have such an indomitable spirit?”
Orochimaru’s excitement dimmed after considering the challenge.
…
…
Chapter 87: Six Months Later, Itachi is Fifteen
"Heroes arise from every corner of the world. Don’t underestimate anyone," Itachi said calmly in response to Orochimaru’s comment.
"The strength of the spirit is not something superficial. It’s tied to willpower. If you experiment on ordinary people or low-level ninjas, the success rate will naturally be negligible," he added, his tone steady.
Itachi’s words, though softly spoken, carried an earth-shattering weight, opening the door to an entirely new realm of possibilities. This field, however, seemed to vary greatly from person to person.
"Itachi, you seem to hold Kakashi in high regard. If what you say is true, then even if you can implant Hashirama’s cells, I wouldn’t be surprised. After all, your abilities are already beyond my comprehension. But Kakashi… While talented, his potential seems..." Orochimaru trailed off, shifting the conversation toward Kakashi.
"First, give him the Uchiha clan’s bloodline, then infuse him with Hashirama’s cells. The success rate will be at least 80%. Don’t hesitate," Orochimaru suggested.
Itachi didn’t respond directly but instead spoke with quiet confidence.
"Kakashi may often lose his way in life and indulge in frivolous, trivial books, but when it comes to willpower, his resolve is unparalleled. After all, he’s Kakashi of the 'fifty-fifty split.' Especially now, having rediscovered his faith, his willpower is even stronger—unyielding and determined."
"Alright, but if things go wrong, don’t blame me," Orochimaru replied with a faint smile, seemingly swayed by Itachi’s unwavering confidence.
If Kakashi’s experiment succeeded, Orochimaru’s own techniques would advance significantly, eliminating many longstanding obstacles in his research.
"Don’t worry about that. Just get it done. By the way, how’s the progress on acquiring the Shikotsumyaku bloodline limit that I requested?" Itachi asked, shifting the topic to something he wanted.
Whether it was the Shikotsumyaku or the Byakugan, Itachi intended to integrate them into himself in the future. However, that would have to wait until the Hashirama cell fusion was complete. Things needed to be done step by step.
"The Shikotsumyaku bloodline limit still needs time. I haven’t perfected the experiments yet," Orochimaru responded softly to Itachi’s inquiry.
"Alright," Itachi replied, slightly disappointed.
Though his current power was already formidable, he felt it lacked balance. His taijutsu was somewhat lagging behind. Incorporating the Shikotsumyaku would address this gap, refining and enhancing his physical abilities.
Despite his impressive strength, Itachi remained humble, driven by a thirst for knowledge, as evident from his relentless study of the Scroll of Seals.
"Itachi, how long do you plan to stay here this time? Should I keep you company?" Orochimaru asked, smiling at Itachi’s momentary disappointment.
"No need. Go take care of Kakashi properly. We’re both grown men—there’s no need for company," Itachi retorted, half-jokingly.
"Alright, I’ll get him settled, then I can finally catch up on some sleep," Orochimaru replied seriously.
After a meal together, Itachi returned to his former residence. He began reviewing the notes and details of the Flying Thunder God Technique, preparing for initial research into its application.
If all else failed, Itachi had a backup plan: he would visit the Land of Whirlpools, retrieve the mask, and perform some nerve-wracking maneuvers to reanimate Minato Namikaze using the Edo Tensei. He would hold Naruto hostage while seeking guidance from the legendary master of the Flying Thunder God Technique.
As a side bonus, he could also reunite the father and son.
Of course, this was just one of Itachi’s mischievous musings. Many individuals deserved respect; he couldn’t truly stoop to such measures.
Two days passed in the blink of an eye.
After another meal together, Orochimaru and Itachi arranged for Kakashi to undergo the procedure.
Seeing Itachi’s composed demeanor, Kakashi’s apprehension about the future lessened considerably.
“Lord Orochimaru, I leave everything in your hands…”
Seeing the strange glint in Orochimaru’s eyes, Kakashi couldn’t help but feel a chill run down his spine.
But when he thought of Obito waiting for him to rescue him and Rin waiting to be brought back to life, everything else seemed insignificant.
After all, there’s nothing in this world more terrifying than confronting the memories buried deep in one’s heart.
Right now, he could even face those memories head-on. What else could possibly scare him?
...
Watching Kakashi being taken away and seeing the light in Orochimaru’s eyes, Itachi returned to his room and began a deep analysis of the Flying Thunder God technique.
This time, he wasn’t fighting alone.
With his drastically transformed body, he used his cheat-like abilities.
Four shadow clones joined him in this sacred evolution.
...
As Itachi focused, time flew by quickly.
Compared to Minato’s isolated and painstaking three-year effort to develop the A-rank, no-seal ninjutsu Rasengan…
Itachi absorbed the wisdom of his predecessors, stood on the shoulders of giants, and added modern inspirations and insights from the 21st century to tackle the Flying Thunder God—a technique on a game-breaking level.
Before he realized it, Itachi had spent half a year secluded in his room.
By now, he was already 15 years old…
If not for the fact that someone delivered meals to him daily and confirmed he was still alive, even Orochimaru might have suspected that Itachi had died of overexertion.
But seeing that Itachi was preoccupied, Orochimaru remained absorbed in his own work.
Kakashi had already been injected with the serum and was currently undergoing a transformation to integrate the Uchiha clan’s bloodline, creating a bloodline that would perfectly suit him.
Meanwhile, Orochimaru was tinkering with Hashirama’s cells, preparing for the nerve-wracking procedure he planned to perform after Kakashi’s transformation was complete.
...
In his room, Itachi closed his eyes. His shadow clones continued, as always, to share their memories and insights with him at the end of each day.
With access to the Tsukuyomi realm, where space and time felt so close at hand, he wasn’t completely in the dark.
“My sensory perception is lacking… Flying Thunder God doesn’t just require spatial talent—it also needs exceptional sensory abilities…”
Itachi opened his eyes, massaging his furrowed brow as he muttered to himself.
With Sage Mode, his sensory abilities were decent, but in his normal state, they were subpar…
“Well, no matter. Theoretical knowledge is complete. Tomorrow, it’s time to put it into practice.”
Lying on his comfortable bed, Itachi stared at the ceiling.
The preparation phase was done. It was time to take action…
Sensory perception is often a matter of innate talent—just like Tobirama and that monster-level Nine-Tails.
Of course, there were ways to compensate.
Whether it was the Senju or Uzumaki clan’s unique physiques, both had a high likelihood of possessing this passive talent.
Combined with certain sensory ninjutsu, it was possible to transform from an amateur into a true master.
...
Chapter 88: Returning to the Akatsuki, Itachi's Changing Mindset
"Damn, this is tough."
Just as Itachi was ready to start mastering his moves, he hit a roadblock.
As a beginner, he couldn’t inscribe the Flying Thunder God mark onto objects—it involved advanced techniques.
Even when he managed to carve it onto a weapon, it didn’t last long.
He suddenly remembered Minato’s custom kunai, which probably held a lot of secrets.
With no other choice, Itachi decided to seek external help.
A letter was sent back to Konoha.
For something like this, only an old hand like Danzo would do.
...
After some twists and turns, Itachi finally acquired one of Minato’s custom kunai and studied it carefully.
He soon realized that the kunai’s design didn’t suit his aesthetic taste.
Not to mention, the Flying Thunder God mark he managed to carve with the character "Itachi" was way too large.
It felt a bit impractical.
So, Itachi went back into seclusion for a few months...
Meanwhile, Kakashi had successfully transformed into "Uchiha Kakashi." The Mangekyō Sharingan in his eye sockets was now fully under his control.
Orochimaru even installed a cloned Mangekyō Sharingan in him.
Feeling satisfied with his newfound mastery over the Mangekyō, Kakashi took a few days to rest before embarking on the next phase of his modifications.
The process was nerve-wracking but exhilarating.
...
In his room, Itachi opened his eyes. In the next second, his figure dispersed and reappeared beside one of his shadow clones.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk... this feeling..."
Itachi savored the sensation for a moment. Everything felt perfect—except for the high chakra consumption.
Using this technique even for short-range teleportation was already draining. Employing it for travel? That seemed out of reach for now.
After all, his goal in learning the Flying Thunder God technique was to appear anywhere in the ninja world at will.
For now, his ambitions weren’t overly grand—he wasn’t ready to imagine performing a “Susano'o Flying Thunder God Slash.”
That level of mastery still felt way too advanced.
...
Seeing that Orochimaru and Kakashi’s experiments were at a critical stage, Itachi decided not to disturb them.
He donned his "Blood Moon" persona and prepared to visit the Akatsuki headquarters.
After all, he had promised Konan that he would return.
It had been almost a year since, which was dangerously close to breaking that promise.
Initially, he hadn’t planned to stay away this long. But Kakashi’s rapid progress had kept him occupied, as Itachi had intended to bring Kakashi along to the Akatsuki.
Now, it seemed that plan would have to wait.
Since he could finally use the Flying Thunder God technique, Itachi was confident he had reached the beginner stage. What remained was the need for inspiration to elevate his mastery—not just secluded research.
...
Once out of the base, Itachi began his journey.
He tossed a kunai forward with force, sensed its location, and then, with a swish, teleported high into the air.
He was getting used to the energy consumption and rhythm of this teleportation technique.
Though it wasn’t flexible yet, he figured he would improve with practice.
Traveling this way felt exhilarating, almost like flashing through space.
The downside was that it quickly drained his chakra.
As a result, for every ten minutes of travel, Itachi had to rest for an hour...
In ten minutes, he could manage about twenty-five teleports before his chakra reserves were significantly depleted.
He left just enough chakra for emergencies.
The hour-long breaks were necessary to recover both his chakra and mental strength.
Maintaining sensory perception consumed a significant amount of mental energy as well.
...
With this intense, inhuman travel method, Itachi’s proficiency with the Flying Thunder God technique rapidly improved. Each use drained less chakra, and his sensory skills and stamina grew noticeably stronger.
An unexpected benefit was that his chakra became more responsive and easier to control—a significant advantage.
After a month of practice, Itachi began to grow a little bored.
Fortunately, he finally arrived in the Land of Rain.
It was time to start a new chapter in his journey.
...
Shortly after entering Amegakure, Itachi was intercepted and escorted to a familiar location: Pain’s office.
The escort knocked on the door and left after bringing Itachi to the entrance.
When Itachi stepped inside, he saw two familiar figures.
“Blood Moon, you’re here. I thought you weren’t going to show up,” one of them said.
---
A woman’s voice rang out—it was Konan.
“Oh, being invited by a beauty so warmly, of course I had to come. It’s just that I’ve been tied up with other matters, so it’s been a while,” Itachi responded enthusiastically, a stark contrast to his usual demeanor.
...
“Blood Moon, right? Konan has already told me about you. Is there anything you’d like to know? If it’s something convenient, I can answer for you,” Pain said softly as he noticed how well Blood Moon and Konan were getting along, offering Itachi a bit of special attention.
“Oh, can members of the organization date?” Itachi asked suddenly. His tone was light, but his masked gaze was fixed intently on Konan.
Since Kakashi had exposed his identity during their last encounter, Itachi had taken his disguise techniques to the next level.
His question plunged the office into silence.
Even Pain was momentarily stunned by Itachi’s words.
This Blood Moon… his intentions don’t seem pure. He’s acting quite unpredictable.
As for Konan, her expression shifted. The Blood Moon of the past had been nothing like this flirtatious character. How had his personality changed so drastically in less than a year? She could hardly recognize him anymore.
“Those who join the organization are individuals with dreams, striving for those dreams. Naturally, such pursuits leave no room for romantic entanglements,” Pain said calmly, noticing the cold aura emanating from Konan beside him.
Inwardly, Pain felt a tinge of disdain toward Blood Moon.
To him, anyone who could be swayed by beauty was hardly worth taking seriously.
After all, a heart devoid of distractions makes for a sharper sword…
...
“Oh? Then what exactly is the organization’s dream?” Itachi asked casually, unfazed by Pain’s indifferent tone.
By now, Itachi was no longer the inexperienced fighter he once was. If the opportunity arose, he wouldn’t mind stirring up some trouble to elevate his position.
After all, following orders as someone else’s subordinate was no fun.
Besides, it was just the Akatsuki, wasn’t it? If he felt like it, he could always establish his own “Night Organization” tomorrow...
Though, he did regret one thing slightly—forming a new organization, even with someone like the child-slayer Orochimaru, wasn’t something that could be done overnight.
And unfortunately, Itachi wasn’t particularly skilled at manipulating people.
...
Pain, observing Itachi’s somewhat playful and irreverent demeanor, felt a growing sense of displeasure.
A rebel unwilling to be disciplined wouldn’t do.
When the chance arises, he thought, I’ll spar with him and show this ignorant Blood Moon what real skill looks like.
“Our organization’s mission is to bring peace to the world. Right now, the five great nations and their ninja villages are the ones constantly stirring up wars. That’s why we’re planning to gather the nine tailed beasts—to inflict pain and awe upon them, making them too afraid to act recklessly,” Pain explained calmly, his words filled with grandeur.
Itachi listened to Pain’s words and watched his somewhat dazed expression, suddenly feeling bored.
To the uninformed, collecting all nine tailed beasts might seem like an awe-inspiring feat.
But for someone like Itachi, who understood the broader picture, it just felt bland and uninspiring.
There was no depth to the plan at all.
If achieving peace in the ninja world was the goal, wouldn’t unifying the entire world be a much more reliable solution?
...
Chapter 89: The Talk Fell Apart...
"Oh, the plan sounds good."
After listening to Pain’s explanation, Itachi responded blandly with a disinterested tone.
"Don’t you think this plan has a lot of feasibility?"
Hearing Itachi’s indifferent words and observing his perfunctory expression, Pain grew displeased.
This Blood Moon guy seems really annoying...
"Yeah, the feasibility is indeed good. The plan is also very well thought out."
Noticing Pain’s tone rising slightly, Itachi remained expressionless as he gave a half-hearted compliment.
Pain stared at Itachi deeply. This Blood Moon guy seemed like another unreliable one—not someone who shared their vision.
---
"So, are you willing to join our organization?"
By now, Pain’s interest in Itachi had waned significantly.
Perhaps this was one of those moments where the conversation was just too out of sync...
Konan quietly observed from beside Pain, saying nothing.
"What does joining your organization entail, and what role would I have?"
Itachi asked indifferently, his interest in the Akatsuki organization having diminished.
He had changed...
Initially, his plan to infiltrate the Akatsuki was merely a means to sabotage Obito.
But plans often couldn’t keep up with changes—Kakashi had stepped into the fray.
Now, he and Obito no longer seemed like they were even in the same league.
Someone like Obito could just be left to Kakashi; there was no reason for a "boss" like him to personally take action.
After all, the king rules over the pawns; a leader assigns tasks to their subordinates.
That was Itachi’s current mindset. He had changed, yet he hadn’t. Deep down, he was still that simple, straightforward youth...
But he had also evolved.
Once Kakashi successfully transplanted Hashirama’s cells, Itachi knew he had to prepare to evolve his Sharingan into the Rinnegan.
He no longer had the patience to mingle with these early-stage players.
That’s right—the crux of it was that he had grown stronger. His vision had expanded, his goals elevated to a whole new level.
---
"Joining our organization means you’ll perform tasks regularly to earn money for sustaining the group. You’ll also gather intelligence on the nine-tailed beasts, all in preparation for our ultimate plan."
"As for you, you’ll start as a provisional member. This year, our active roster is full. If anyone dies, that’ll be your opportunity to step up. The tasks for provisional and official members are essentially the same—everything is done in pursuit of our ultimate goal."
Pain’s explanation left Itachi with a peculiar look in his eyes.
Such words could bring Wall Street capitalists to tears.
Not only did they pay wages, but they also expected their members to work hard to make money for the organization.
Of course, what truly puzzled Itachi wasn’t that part—Obito hadn’t dared to phrase things like this when recruiting him.
What perplexed him was the absurdity of being brought in with such fanfare, only to be assigned a provisional member status. Was this a joke?
---
"Your organization’s tasks mostly involve bounty hunting and taking jobs from other villages, right?"
Itachi asked, his tone laced with curiosity as he observed Pain.
"Yes, it seems you’re quite familiar with us," Pain replied with a nod.
"Then why should I, as a bounty hunter who gets to keep all the money I earn, join your organization where I’d risk my life for you, only to hand over everything I make? Don’t you think your pitch is a bit ridiculous?"
Itachi’s tone carried a tinge of sarcasm as he addressed Pain.
Unless he was out of his mind, he couldn’t possibly fail to see the imbalance here.
The same lifestyle—one where he keeps everything he earns versus one where he hands it all over. Why would he choose the latter?
"If you have so many questions, are you joining or not?"
Konan’s cold tone interrupted the silence.
---
"What happens if I don’t join?"
Itachi asked playfully, clearly unimpressed by Konan’s attitude.
Pain, meanwhile, was still mulling over Itachi’s words.
He realized that Itachi had a point.
Originally, bounty hunters kept everything they earned.
Joining the organization offered no tangible benefits. Instead, members were treated as underlings, forced to hand over their earnings.
Worse still, the Akatsuki members weren’t just underlings—they were also disposable pawns.
Facing powerful Jinchuriki, anyone with mediocre abilities would just be cannon fodder.
Pain finally grasped the reality: Itachi wasn’t a rogue ninja on the run, seeking refuge. He wasn’t desperate for a safe haven.
Moreover, Pain knew that joining the Akatsuki meant more than being a subordinate—it often meant becoming a sacrificial pawn.
What Pain needed were those who sought peace or rogue ninjas.
---
Instead of being someone who’s used to freedom and keeps their head tied to their belt.
...
“The Akatsuki isn’t a place where you can come and go as you please.”
Before Pain could respond, Konan shot a cold glance at Itachi and spoke.
She was utterly fed up with this Blood Moon.
From the very beginning, his attitude had been irritating—acting like a flirt, asking all sorts of questions. Now he was still behaving like this, dragging things out endlessly.
Were the two of them here to entertain him or what?
“Oh? So you're saying you're forcing people to join now?”
As Konan’s words revealed her true intentions, Itachi’s expression grew indifferent.
He was already calculating whether he could leave Akatsuki unscathed if a fight broke out right now.
Indeed, even with his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, he hadn’t entertained the idea of defeating the Rinnegan—not even a non-original one.
...
“Enough, Konan. Let him go. If our paths are different, there’s no need to force them to align. Since our dreams don’t match, let’s not push this.”
Unlike the furious Konan, Pain spoke magnanimously.
It almost felt like they were playing good cop, bad cop.
But Pain thought differently from Konan. Forced alliances are meaningless. Even if they coerced Blood Moon into joining today, what would it accomplish? He’d just find an excuse during a mission to slip away. After all, the sky’s the limit for a bird in flight.
And if a fight broke out here, wouldn’t it damage his office?
As a leader, he needed to set an example—leading with frugality and honor.
Yes, Pain and Konan weren’t on the same wavelength.
Pain already knew this negotiation had failed. Their persuasion tactics and operational approach had clear flaws.
As for Blood Moon, letting him walk didn’t mean they wouldn’t kill him later.
After all, he already knew their plans and had wasted so much of their time. They’d have to claim his 30-million bounty to make up for it.
“But!”
Hearing Pain’s words, Konan was furious.
Blood Moon refusing to join the Akatsuki felt like a slap in her face.
She thought about how, during his first mission, Itachi had already caused trouble.
When they finally had a second mission, Blood Moon ghosted them—for almost a year!
Now he finally showed up, but he was nothing like the image she’d described to Pain.
This made her feel restless and incompetent, as if her abilities had fallen short.
And now, not only had he shredded the intelligence she painstakingly gathered, but he’d also humiliated her. He was about to just walk out, leaving her trampled on and disgraced.
Konan had never felt so humiliated in her life, which only fueled her rage.
At first, she had a good impression of Blood Moon because he helped her stall Jiraiya. She even said good things about him to Pain. But now, looking back, it felt like she had been played and mocked.
Her kindness had been treated like dirt...
...
Chapter 90: Payne Takes Action
Hearing Payne's words, Itachi felt a strange sense of unease.
Is this really the Payne he knew...?
Wasn't he supposed to make him feel pain... why is he letting him go so easily?
Just like that?
Itachi's mind suddenly became lively.
He couldn't quite understand Payne anymore...
Seeing Konan's hesitation, Payne gently shook his head.
Itachi clicked his tongue, finding the situation rather uninteresting.
He was currently curious to test the power of his Rinnegan.
After all, if he couldn't win, he could always escape, no big deal.
As he watched Itachi turn and leave, Payne narrowed his eyes slightly, while Konan looked somewhat frustrated.
She had messed up again...
Who was she supposed to complain to? She kept running into situations like this.
She must be cursed.
“He’s left Amegakure, let's go. Let him understand that ignorance sometimes leads to death.”
Payne said, looking at Konan’s gloomy expression.
He waited a moment, and just as Konan was about to speak, Payne softly added,
“Hmm? Him? Are you planning to take action against Blood Moon?”
Hearing Payne's words, Konan subconsciously asked.
Wasn’t Payne just about to let him go? Why was he now preparing to act?
She couldn't quite follow Payne's line of thinking...
This was the difference in their way of thinking.
If a fight broke out in Amegakure, what if they accidentally harmed one of their own? Konan hadn't considered this issue.
However, Payne, as the leader, always thought about such matters.
Of course, if the situation was urgent, these concerns would be minor.
“He dared to bully Konan. I will never forgive him. Let him use his thirty-million-yen head to apologize…”
Payne said softly, noticing Konan’s confusion.
Just like before...
Looking at Payne walking ahead, Konan’s eyes softened.
“He’s back? This damned sense of familiarity?”
Konan thought to herself, her mind filled with thoughts. In that moment, it was as if she saw the past, everything had been so wonderful…
She wished this moment could last forever…
Payne controlled the force field around him, flying toward the village's outskirts.
Konan, with a pair of paper wings sprouting from her back, closely followed Payne.
The feeling made her feel like she had returned to the past.
Her heart seemed to melt...
“Payne, no… Nagato, you've changed… this isn’t quite the you I knew…”
After leaving Amegakure, Itachi, who had been planning to wander around for a bit, suddenly paused, speaking softly.
He had been practicing the Flying Thunder God Technique recently, so his senses were constantly active, sharpening his perception.
After all, his natural talent for perception wasn’t great, so he had to rely on this method to practice.
Through his senses, he detected Konan and Payne quickly approaching.
Itachi calmly made his way toward a less populated area, looking for a more spacious battlefield.
“It seems he’s noticed us, but he doesn’t seem to want to run. I can’t tell if he’s confident in his strength or if he’s just blindly arrogant,”
Payne, flying ahead, slowed down and spoke quietly.
It was as if they shared an unspoken understanding.
“Sometimes ignorance leads to fearlessness,”
Konan replied in a faint tone, her heart carrying a slight sense of disappointment.
But she didn’t show any childlike attitude, instead responding to Payne’s words with calm indifference.
“He’s not bad. He purposely walked toward a less populated area. He must be worried about hurting innocent people. This respect for life is commendable,”
Payne said softly.
At this moment, Itachi had already arrived in a mountain range. Sensing that the surrounding environment was ideal for a fight, he stopped and waited quietly for Pain to arrive.
Pain's Deva Path didn't have many techniques, but the ones it did possess were extremely powerful.
This was exactly why Itachi wanted to test the waters, to understand the gap between them.
Better to know now than to suffer a massive loss due to overconfidence later.

"Finally, you're here. Took you long enough," Itachi muttered calmly as he spotted two figures flying in from the sky.
"Commendable courage, but unfortunately, it seems you don’t know your limits. A mere mortal daring to face a god," Pain remarked coolly as he hovered in the air, exuding an aura of confidence.
Konan, however, frowned deeply. She hated Blood Moon's (Itachi’s alias) demeanor—this misplaced, ignorant confidence was truly irritating.
...
"A god, huh? Sure, flying is pretty cool, but calling yourself a god? That's a bit much," Itachi replied, his expression blank as he casually turned his cup in hand.
"Konan, step back. Let me see what makes this self-important man so bold," Pain said softly, glancing at Konan.
Initially, he had been somewhat intrigued, interested in seeing Blood Moon's capabilities. But Blood Moon’s provocative words killed any desire for conversation.
At Pain’s instruction, Konan withdrew, retreating to a safe distance to observe the battle.
...
"Obito, Pain's about to make his move. That guy looks familiar—wasn't he the one from last time?"
In the shadows, two figures stood on a tree branch. Zetsu spoke with some excitement, while Obito remained silent, quietly observing Blood Moon.
He seemed more mature now. The ripples in his memory from their previous encounter had caused him not just pain but also growth.
"Blood Moon..." Obito muttered the name softly.
...
"Your sensory abilities are impressive. Can’t you sense the vast difference between us, Blood Moon?" Pain said as Konan moved away, glancing briefly toward Obito and Zetsu’s location before addressing Itachi.
"Oh, so you're the one picking a fight with me? I thought we agreed that no hard feelings would follow failed negotiations. Yet here you are, spouting these cold remarks. What's the point?" Itachi replied dismissively, interrupting Pain’s dramatic rhetoric.
"If you know the gap between us, why didn’t you run?" Pain asked, curious. He couldn't understand what gave Blood Moon the confidence to stay and wait.
"The gap may be significant, but are you truly certain you can stop me?" Itachi countered without flinching.
...
"Heh..."
Pain laughed, baring his pristine white teeth. If he had burst into loud laughter, the scene would have been even more absurd.
Seeing Pain so dismissive of him, Itachi shook his head, finding it rather dull.
As someone who had transmigrated into this world, he had never underestimated anyone. Yet here was Pain, clearly inflated with self-importance.
Such arrogance. Did he truly think himself invincible?
After all, this was merely one of Pain’s avatars. What was there to be so smug about?
Itachi’s chakra began to surge, silver light spreading out from him.
Seeing this, Pain didn’t hesitate. Extending his right hand, his fingers curled slightly as if grasping something.
"Universal Pull!"
Pain didn’t believe in holding back. Faced with someone as bold as Blood Moon, he naturally responded with full force, unleashing Universal Pull.
In his left hand, a black rod materialized, ready to impale Itachi.
He intended to show Itachi the true meaning of the word "gap."
I’m allowed to act superior—you’re not.
...
The moment Pain raised his hand, Itachi knew no good would come of it. He had been waiting for this.
"Bang!"
Itachi’s body flew toward Pain, pulled by an invisible force.
The black rod in Pain’s hand struck Itachi square in the chest, driving into his heart.
But in a flash, Itachi’s body transformed with a faint sound—into a mere log.
"So scary," Itachi remarked mockingly, stepping out from behind a tree and patting his chest in feigned fear.
This was the essence of his "Blood Moon" persona: endless taunts.
...
Pain frowned slightly. In that brief moment, he had only detected a slight fluctuation in Itachi’s chakra.
It shouldn’t have been enough time for him to react, let alone use a Substitution Jutsu. When had he prepared it? Before Pain even arrived?
Pain’s expression darkened as he slowly withdrew the black rod.
...
Itachi simply stared at Pain, silently gathering information.
From his perspective, Pain’s techniques, though powerful, likely had cooldown intervals.
This was the perfect time to observe and identify weaknesses.
He silently counted in his mind, tracking the time between Pain’s uses of Universal Pull.

PS: I slightly revised the chapter about stealing the Scroll of Seals.
Although Tobirama possessed all seven chakra natures, apart from Water, his Wind and Fire techniques probably weren’t listed as forbidden jutsu in the scroll.
So, besides the Flying Thunder God Technique, Itachi only copied a few other forbidden techniques.
High-level Wind and Fire techniques will come later.
