“Don’t… don’t worry about me…”
However, in response to Sakai’s questioning, the man standing at the intersection remained indifferent, replying in a low voice.
Hearing his answer, Sakai frowned.
In fact, the police department had already accelerated its investigation into these mysterious figures appearing in Horikawa.
At the same time, they attempted to communicate with them.
But no matter how much the police interrogated them, these individuals refused to disclose why they suddenly froze in place.
Judging from their reactions, they seemed to already know why they were standing there.
Pulling his thoughts away from the collected investigation reports, Sakai studied the man’s expression. That same mix of despair and numbness—it was identical to everyone else who had been discovered.
With little useful information from the man, Sakai abandoned his plan to continue questioning him. Instead, he signaled to the special rapid-response unit behind him. Two highly trained officers stepped forward and firmly grabbed the man’s outstretched arms.
“Hm?”
As one of the officers placed his hands on the man's arms, an expression of surprise flickered across his face.
“What is it?”
Noticing the officer’s reaction, Sakai asked.
“Nothing, sir. It’s just that his strength is greater than I expected.”
For an ordinary person to hold their arms up like this, even for a while, muscle fatigue would set in, making them unable to resist external force.
Yet this man had been standing at the intersection for an extended period with his arms raised—and even now, when confronted by trained officers, he still exhibited an unusual amount of strength.
Gritting his teeth, the officer applied more force and finally managed to press the man's arms down.
Despite being escorted away by the rapid-response team, the man did not resist at all.
“…It’s useless… none of this matters…”
Throughout the entire transport, the man remained unnaturally cooperative.
Yet he kept mumbling under his breath, as if trying to tell Sakai and the others that all of this was in vain.
---
“Yes, yes… I understand…”
Kyoto, Police Headquarters.
The Prime Minister’s resignation had caused a massive political upheaval in Tokyo.
Various factions were scrambling to seize an opportunity, while the strange occurrences in Horikawa had also drawn some attention.
Even though they were not at the scene like Sakai, and didn’t understand the situation as thoroughly, that didn’t stop them from issuing orders and trying to dictate his actions.
The government had expended significant effort to suppress the media frenzy surrounding Keiko and the time capsule incident. Naturally, they wanted to avoid any further scandals at such a critical moment.
With the Prime Minister stepping down and vacancies in the cabinet, the ruling party was at its weakest. If the opposition seized the opportunity, even if they couldn't overthrow the government, it would still cause significant damage—potentially influencing the next election.
After hanging up the call from Tokyo, Sakai let out a long sigh and rubbed his forehead.
Takayama’s plan to use Keiko’s abilities to assassinate government officials was undeniably deranged, but he wasn’t entirely wrong about one thing—
These high-ranking politicians, from a certain perspective, really were parasites of the nation.
They fed on the country’s future, exploiting it for their own personal gain and the interests of their families. They indulged in the privileges of power but refused to bear its responsibilities.
Unfortunately, he had no choice in the matter.
Sakai despised these self-important politicians, but he was powerless to change anything.
No matter how corrupt, a nation was still a nation.
He hadn’t lost his mind to the extent that Takayama had.
Pushing aside his thoughts, Sakai refocused on the wall in front of him, which was covered in photographs taken by the police department.
Each image depicted a person discovered in various locations throughout Horikawa, standing completely motionless.
Because these individuals seemed bound to the spots where they were found, the internet had begun referring to them as “The Earthbound.”
So far, the police had identified over fifty “Earthbound” individuals, and their numbers continued to rise. Based on the calls received by the department, reports of “Earthbound” cases had exceeded a hundred. Even after filtering out duplicates and prank calls, the emergence of new “Earthbound” individuals remained frequent.
Most of them were adult men, but a smaller portion spanned different age groups.
The youngest recorded “Earthbound” was a twelve-year-old boy found near the Horikawa Bridge. He had been discovered standing by the river, completely frozen in place.
Upon hearing about his condition, his parents immediately rushed to the scene and took him home.
But before long, the boy returned to the exact spot where he had been found—assuming the same rigid stance as before.
The police investigation revealed that the method by which the “Earthbound” moved was unknown.
Many of them had been taken home by family members, only to reappear at their original locations in the blink of an eye.
Furthermore, their unwillingness to explain anything made the investigation incredibly difficult.
For now, the cause of their condition remained a mystery.
---
“Sir! The target is missing!”
Just as Sakai was analyzing the photos of the “Earthbound,” a sudden report from Officer Yamamoto interrupted his thoughts.
The shock on Yamamoto’s face was unmistakable.
The missing individual was none other than the man Sakai and the rapid-response unit had detained at the intersection earlier.
The suspect had been locked inside an interrogation room under strict guard at the police headquarters.
Yet, despite the layers of security, the “Earthbound” individual had vanished.
“What about the interrogation room footage?”
Unlike Yamamoto, Sakai was not particularly surprised.
The fact that “Earthbound” individuals always returned to their original locations was something they had already learned from previous investigations.
He had placed this man in the interrogation room precisely to test whether, under heavy surveillance, he would still disappear like the others.
Apparently, even with all the precautions in place, preventing an “Earthbound” from returning to their spot was impossible.
“Did the cameras capture anything?”
“The cameras were running the entire time, but…”
Yamamoto hesitated, his expression unreadable.
He handed over a DV camcorder.
Taking the device, Sakai began watching the recorded footage.

*Chapter 317: Rumors*
Inside the lens of the recording camera.
The "Earthbound" individual had a blank expression, staring motionlessly in the direction of the camera. He showed no reaction to anything around him, including the police interrogation at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.
He remained silent for a long time.
The police officer in charge of the interrogation seemed to grow impatient and left the room, leaving the "Earthbound" individual alone inside.
"……"
However, even then—
The "Earthbound" individual in the interrogation room still showed no reaction, his dull gaze locked onto the camera.
Watching the footage, Sakai frowned slightly and adjusted the playback speed.
As the video sped up, the shadows cast by the interrogation room's lights shifted, and police officers entered and exited the room. The only thing that remained unchanged was the "Earthbound" individual sitting motionless in his chair.
This unmoving state lasted for over two hours in the recording. Just as Sakai was beginning to grow bored, the police officer inside the room stepped out once again. At that moment, the previously still and lifeless "Earthbound" individual finally reacted.
"There it is!"
Seeing this, Sakai's expression tensed. He quickly adjusted the video speed back to normal.
On screen, the "Earthbound" individual raised his arms, assuming the exact same posture as he had at the street intersection. Then, slowly, he began stepping backward. Under Sakai's watchful gaze, he pressed himself against the interrogation room's wall.
Up to this point, his actions could still be considered normal.
But what happened next completely exceeded Sakai's expectations.
The footage showed the "Earthbound" individual standing against the wall with his arms outstretched. Then, slowly, his body started to sink into the wall—bit by bit—until, eventually, he vanished completely.
Several minutes after the "Earthbound" individual disappeared, the police officers outside finally noticed and rushed into the interrogation room.
"So, this is how the 'Earthbound' individuals vanish."
Pausing the video, Sakai took a moment to process the shock of witnessing the "Earthbound" individual merge into the wall before speaking.
He had always wondered how these individuals managed to escape after being taken away. At first, he assumed it was due to negligence on the part of the officers in charge. But now, it was clear—the "Earthbound" individuals couldn't be contained. They could escape from anywhere they were confined, all to return to another place where they were bound.
Ironically, their method of escape was a perfect contradiction to their name.
---
Meanwhile, the police investigation into the "Earthbound" individuals was progressing slowly.
However, due to media coverage, the topic was rapidly gaining attention.
Unlike Keiko, who appeared through mysterious phone calls, the "Earthbound" individuals physically manifested throughout Horikawa. Even without actively searching for them, people would come across them unexpectedly.
No matter how much the authorities tried to suppress information, the existence of the "Earthbound" individuals was undeniable.
More importantly, while a few of them disrupted traffic, most were not located in crowded areas. Some appeared in narrow alleys, others in parks, and some even inside private homes.
As a result, the government had no solid reason or justification to forcibly remove them.
With media coverage and online discussions spreading rapidly, public curiosity grew.
Many people began flocking to Kyoto, searching for traces of the "Earthbound" individuals throughout Horikawa. Some hoped to ask them why they were doing this and uncover the truth. But for most, it was mere curiosity—they wanted to see if the news reports were real. Some even treated the "Earthbound" individuals as sightseeing attractions for photos.
At first, this "Earthbound" craze was a headache for the Kyoto government. However, to their surprise, the phenomenon boosted local tourism.
But as time went on and the number of "Earthbound" individuals continued to rise—especially when they started appearing beyond Horikawa in other parts of Kyoto—
The same curious onlookers who had eagerly followed the trend began to feel fear.
At the same time, rumors that the "Earthbound" condition was contagious started spreading online.
As the initial hype died down, the public began urging the government to put a stop to the phenomenon and investigate its origins.
Unfortunately, neither the authorities nor experts had any clue about the nature of the "Earthbound" individuals.
In fact, due to this crisis, public confidence in the already struggling government plummeted further, turning the Cabinet into a target for national frustration.
Upon hearing this, the former Prime Minister felt even more relieved about his decision to resign—otherwise, he would have been the one taking all the blame.
---
*"Yes, as you can see, I am reporting live from the site of an 'Earthbound' incident."*
In Kyoto Prefecture, a reporter from Kyoto Broadcasting Corporation was covering the latest appearance of an "Earthbound" individual.
Due to the viral rumor that the condition was contagious, the reporter wore a protective suit. His face was tense as he glanced at the motionless "Earthbound" figure behind him.
So far, no one knew the true cause of their existence.
Yet, under the influence of media and online speculation, the belief that the condition was infectious continued to spread—even affecting news organizations.
*"Right now, what you're seeing are personnel from the Tokyo Health Bureau. They are here to quarantine the 'Earthbound' individuals and determine whether this phenomenon is linked to an unknown infectious disease."*
On the local television broadcast, a group of health officials in protective suits cautiously approached an "Earthbound" individual.
*"Hello, we are with the Health Bureau. We need you to cooperate and leave the scene with us for quarantine. We must ensure that your condition does not spread any further."*
*"Please, come this way."*
As they spoke, one of the officials reached out and grabbed the "Earthbound" individual's arm, attempting to move them.
However, the moment he made contact, he realized that the figure was far heavier than expected.
*"I need help! I can’t move him on my own!"*
Gritting his teeth, the official struggled to pull the "Earthbound" individual and called out to his colleague.
*"I’ll help you."*
Another official stepped in, but to their shock, even with both of them working together, they couldn’t budge the "Earthbound" individual even an inch.

Chapter 318: Petrification
"This... how is this possible!?"
Upon witnessing the scene, the staff member's face, partially obscured by a mask, revealed an expression of shock.
According to their information, these so-called "Earthbound" individuals had not eaten since they were first bound in place. Under normal circumstances, an ordinary person would not be able to survive for so long without food. Even if they somehow endured, their physical strength should have already deteriorated drastically. There was no way the "Earthbound" could remain standing in such bizarre postures, let alone stay completely motionless despite the movements of the health department staff.
"Quick! Look at his feet! His feet are turning to stone!"
Faced with the unmoving "Earthbound," the staff members were at a loss.
But then, someone suddenly noticed something unusual. He pointed at the "Earthbound" man's feet, his face filled with shock.
As the staff shouted, the local TV station also reacted immediately.
The cameraman adjusted the lens, focusing on the "Earthbound" man's legs.
On screen, his legs had already begun transforming into a stone-like texture, and his feet were firmly fused with the ground, completely immobile.
The footage captured by Kyoto Television quickly spread across regional TV channels via radio waves.
With the power of the internet, the news of the "Earthbound" individuals turning to stone soon reached the entirety of Japan.
This transformation gave the previously peculiar rumors a terrifying new layer.
Many people who had initially dismissed the "Earthbound" rumors as nonsense now felt uneasy. Panic over the "Earthbound" began to spread throughout Japan, along with speculation that it was contagious.
Everything was spiraling in a disastrous direction.
---
“…This could be a rare disease. In fact, throughout human medical history, such conditions have existed. One known example is Osteopetrosis, also called Marble Bone Disease, a rare disorder in which bones become abnormally dense, appearing grayish-white like stone…”
On a televised program, an expert confidently explained his theory regarding the "Earthbound" phenomenon.
Using professional terminology, he attempted to convince viewers that everything happening to the "Earthbound" was simply the result of an uncommon illness.
"Of course, it's not that simple."
Inside the Kyoto Metropolitan Police Department, Sakai casually turned off the television in front of him, a mocking smirk appearing on his face.
This kind of media manipulation was nothing new to him.
Previously, when dealing with the case of Keiko from the time capsule and the Red String Society, he had used similar tactics—leveraging news programs and media coverage to suppress public panic.
Now, the so-called experts appearing on major news programs were undoubtedly being backed by the authorities.
With the government pulling the strings, media influence quickly dampened the public’s interest in the "Earthbound."
However, while discussions about them gradually decreased online, Kyoto—the epicenter of the phenomenon—was descending further into chaos.
Within just a week of the first discovery, the number of "Earthbound" individuals had surpassed a hundred. Their locations, once confined to Horikawa, had begun spreading outward. A few cases had even been reported in nearby areas.
To ease public panic, the Kyoto prefectural governor immediately dispatched health department personnel to intervene. However, their efforts yielded little success.
As shown in previous footage from the police department, any "Earthbound" forcibly removed from their location would, after a short period, uncontrollably return. Even tying them to a hospital bed did nothing to prevent their eventual return to the original spot.
After multiple failed attempts, Kyoto authorities had no choice but to abandon efforts to treat the "Earthbound."
As the local government stepped back, many who had held out hope for a solution—primarily the families of the "Earthbound"—began to fall into despair. Some even gave up entirely on their petrifying loved ones. Only a few still clung to the hope that they could be restored.
The situation was growing worse.
According to Sakai’s intelligence, after the TV station broadcast footage of an "Earthbound" individual turning to stone, the earliest cases from Horikawa had also begun showing signs of petrification.
Their bodies were slowly transforming into stone.
The "Earthbound" could clearly sense the change happening within them, but they were powerless to stop it. They could do nothing but let the process continue.
Sakai reached up, rubbing his throbbing temple before looking down at the photograph in his hand.
The image depicted the first "Earthbound" individual he had encountered—the one trapped at the intersection. As expected, he too had begun to petrify. His legs and arms had already turned to stone, and the transformation was creeping up toward his chest.
Based on expert estimations, it wouldn't be long before his entire body was completely petrified.
And once he fully turned to stone… what would happen next?
Sakai speculated that, ultimately, he would lose his life—frozen in place forever.
“What exactly is causing the ‘Earthbound’ phenomenon?”
Since their first appearance, this question had haunted Sakai.
He had visited numerous sites, questioned the "Earthbound" and their families, hoping to uncover a reason.
Yet no matter how he pressed, none of them were willing to reveal the truth.
From the expressions on their faces, it was clear they understood why they had ended up in their current state.
But they refused to say a word.
They would rather remain trapped, slowly turning to stone, than reveal the secret.
"Sakai, I found a pattern in the ‘Earthbound’ cases!"
Inside the temporary police office, as Sakai stared at the photograph, deep in thought—
Suddenly, urgent footsteps echoed from outside.
The door swung open, and Yamamoto burst into the room, his voice filled with excitement.
(End of Chapter)
*Chapter 319: The Cause of Formation*
"A pattern?"
Noticing the key term that Yamamoto mentioned, Sakai looked up at the panting officer.
His expression involuntarily brightened with excitement, and he asked in an expectant tone, "Tell me, what exactly have you discovered, Yamamoto?"
Standing in the office, Yamamoto took deep breaths to steady himself before looking at Sakai. Suppressing his excitement, he began to speak.
"Yes, Inspector Sakai."
"In fact, ever since the first 'Earthbound' appeared, I have never stopped investigating their identities. However, because these 'Earthbound' individuals have consistently displayed uncooperative attitudes, the entire investigative process has been difficult. After spending considerable time and effort without progress, I decided to abandon my direct investigation of the 'Earthbound' individuals and instead focused on the locations that bound them."
"I thought, since the 'Earthbound' are compelled to return to the same spot no matter what, could it be that the place itself is extraordinary?"
"To uncover the truth, I investigated all the locations in Horikawa where 'Earthbound' individuals appeared and compiled statistics. During my inquiries with local residents, I discovered that one of these locations was the site of a hit-and-run accident seven years ago. A motorcycle struck and killed a child at that intersection. The perpetrator fled immediately after the accident. Because the incident occurred at dusk, none of the nearby residents saw the suspect’s face, making the investigation difficult. To this day, the perpetrator remains at large."
"Initially, when I learned about this hit-and-run case, I didn’t think much of it, assuming it merely left a lasting mark on the area. However, during subsequent investigations, I recalled this incident and decided to examine the other locations where 'Earthbound' individuals had appeared. The results were..."
As Yamamoto reached this point, his tone grew heavier.
Sakai's expression also turned more serious. He had already sensed something from Yamamoto’s words.
"Most of the locations where 'Earthbound' individuals appear have, at some point in the past, been the scene of accidents or deaths. Furthermore, the perpetrators of these incidents were never caught. Given that the 'Earthbound' always appear at the location of a death, it is highly likely that..."
"It's highly likely that they are directly connected to the deaths, or perhaps they themselves are the culprits!"
Interrupting Yamamoto, Sakai stood up from his chair, his eyes gleaming.
"The cause of the 'Earthbound' phenomenon is not mere accident—it is the lingering hatred of the dead!"
Although this was still just a hypothesis, Sakai was already inclined to believe it.
"Yamamoto, gather all available records of these deaths immediately. We need to confirm whether the formation of 'Earthbound' individuals is truly linked to crime."
"Yes, Inspector Sakai!"
With Sakai’s command, the entire Kyoto Police Department sprang into action.
As they reviewed case files, Sakai discovered clues he had previously overlooked.
He had been too focused on the 'Earthbound' individuals themselves and had neglected the significance of their locations.
The case files made it clear: most of the locations where the 'Earthbound' stood had been the sites of deaths.
If this had only happened once, it could be dismissed as coincidence.
However, the recurrence of such incidents suggested otherwise. It explained why the 'Earthbound' preferred to turn to stone rather than explain their presence—because from the moment they stood in that place, they already knew the reason.
With evidence in hand, the investigation progressed more smoothly.
By examining the surroundings of 'Earthbound' locations, the Kyoto Police Department unearthed a corpse at one such site. The remains belonged to the perpetrator of a previously unsolved murder case.
As more horrifying cases came to light, public sympathy for the 'Earthbound' began to wane.
The media also shifted its stance. No longer did they report that the 'Earthbound' were victims of a rare medical condition. Instead, they used the cases behind the 'Earthbound' to warn citizens: do not break the law, or you might become the next 'Earthbound.'
---
*Beep beep!*
On a bustling street, sanitation workers dispatched by the government directed a crane operator to fasten ropes around an 'Earthbound' individual’s arms. As the crane lifted, the stone figure snapped at the thighs, leaving its petrified legs embedded in the road while the upper body was dumped onto the flatbed truck.
*Clang!*
Under the workers’ instructions, the crane operator carefully lowered the 'Earthbound' onto the truck bed, causing a dull thud. One of the figure’s arms struck the platform and lost a finger in the impact, yet neither the workers nor the operator reacted.
Looking at the truck’s flatbed, one could see it was already filled with stiff, stone-like 'Earthbound' bodies.
Over the past few days, many 'Earthbound' individuals had completely turned to stone, losing all signs of life.
Scans confirmed that these petrified 'Earthbound' no longer exhibited any biological functions. Even when their heads were broken open, they contained no trace of a brain, bones, or any other human anatomy—only stone.
With this confirmation, the Kyoto government no longer saw a reason to let them remain in public spaces, obstructing traffic and daily life.
Although the method of forcibly removing the 'Earthbound' sparked controversy online, the public outcry remained muted due to the nature of their origins. Even the families of the 'Earthbound' dared not protest too loudly.
Japanese society had turned the 'Earthbound' into a taboo.
Once a family had an 'Earthbound' member, they did not only suffer the loss of a loved one; they also had to endure overwhelming social condemnation.
Because everyone knew—
The 'Earthbound' were murderers.

Chapter 320: Script Settlement
"……"
Standing at the intersection, Sakai quietly watched as the Public Health Bureau staff retrieved the Jibakusha (Earthbound Spirits).
The reason behind the Jibakusha's binding had already been widely reported in the media and news, making it common knowledge among the public. Further investigations had confirmed that most of the Jibakusha were tied to unresolved murder cases in their past lives.
However, knowing was one thing.
Even though the cause of the Jibakusha’s existence had been identified, the truth seemed to have no effect on stopping what was happening before their eyes.
The number of Jibakusha continued to increase, with no end in sight.
Under this inexplicable phenomenon, a large number of citizens fled from Kyoto.
Even during the daytime, Kyoto seemed shrouded in gloom.
As people passed by on the streets, their eyes occasionally revealed disgust when they glanced at the Jibakusha being transported in vehicles.
The emergence of the Jibakusha had severely impacted Kyoto’s economy, and the once-stable housing market had plummeted.
Sakai withdrew his gaze from the Jibakusha and turned to leave.
In fact, now that the cause of the Jibakusha's formation had been uncovered, his mission in Kyoto was already complete.
Orders had arrived from Tokyo, instructing him to return to headquarters.
However, just as Sakai turned around, his vision suddenly went black.
——
"Another Jibakusha..."
"Damn it, business has been terrible lately because of them…"
"Why did a Jibakusha have to appear here of all places? So unlucky."
"These Jibakusha… they all deserve it."
Amidst his daze, Sakai seemed to hear the murmurs of those around him. When he opened his eyes, the scene before him was completely beyond his expectations.
He clearly remembered his last location—standing at an intersection in Horikawa.
But now, he was in the middle of a bustling street.
Sweeping his gaze across his surroundings, he noticed the unmistakable expression of revulsion in the eyes of passersby.
A flicker of confusion crossed Sakai’s mind.
Before he could say anything—
In the next moment, his face froze.
Right in front of him stood a vague, motionless figure amidst the crowd. People walked through it as if it weren’t there, yet no one seemed to notice.
However, Sakai could see it clearly.
The figure was staring at him with eyes full of hatred.
And that face—
It was none other than Takayama, the journalist who had been shot and killed during a Special Raid Unit operation.
Staring at Takayama’s hateful expression, Sakai suddenly understood.
Lowering his gaze, he saw his own body—standing frozen in the center of the street, arms raised.
He had become a Jibakusha.
The formation of Jibakusha stemmed from the resentment of the dead. Yet, this hatred had no moral distinction—it was simply hatred.
Takayama’s resentment toward him had turned him into a Jibakusha.
At that moment, Sakai recalled the investigation of a young boy who had also become a Jibakusha. The boy hadn’t committed any crimes—he had simply killed a rabid dog in self-defense while fleeing.
Now, the power of hatred had turned into a curse.
It did not differentiate between good and evil.
It existed solely for revenge.

[Plot Points]: 4,295,250
"Haaah…"
San Marino.
Allen let out a long sigh as he withdrew his gaze from the system screen, where Sakai had now become a Jibakusha.
Looking at the over four million Plot Points on the panel, he felt not only joy but also exhaustion. This time, the system-generated Horror Story script had been exceptionally long.
From its origins at Horikawa High School to the expansion of the Jibakusha legend across all of Kyoto, and then, thanks to Takayama’s meddling, a major shift in the plot—he had been forced to spend a considerable amount of Plot Points just to correct it.
Originally, the story was confined to Kyoto, but he had to extend it all the way to the Prime Minister’s residence in Tokyo.
And because the plot involved high-ranking government officials, the cost of corrections skyrocketed. Just dealing with the two ministers killed by Keiko cost him over 100,000 Plot Points each.
Fortunately, the script was finally wrapped up.
In the end, the four million Plot Points he had earned felt well worth the time and effort he had spent.
Collecting his thoughts, Allen turned his attention to the system’s backend panel.
