*Chapter 1: Who Would Even Think of Finding a Legal Job in Gotham?*
🕑 Added 2025-05-10 08:47:54 +0000 UTCCold, shaking...
A clanging sound echoed in his ears, and the groggy Cody head hurt from the vibrations of the ground.
"Sir."
Half-asleep and half-awake, a voice seemed to be repeating by his side.
Who is this?
"Sir!"
Who is this voice calling out to?
Me?
"Wake up! Sir!"
Cold and damp air rushed in, filling Cody nasal cavity. The air seemed to carry a hint of blood and a strange sense of danger.
This sensation seemed to go straight from his nose to his soul. Cody mind instantly cleared up, as if being pulled to the surface from the deep sea.
He suddenly opened his eyes and saw an unfamiliar ceiling.
No, not a ceiling.
The ground swayed rhythmically with a clanging sound. Outside the window beside him, thick dark clouds were moving rapidly. There were rows of seats on both sides, and he was lying in the aisle between them.
He was on a train.
But why am I in a place like this?
Cody, just waking up, propped himself up and sat on the ground. Around him were rows of empty train seats and a conductor standing beside him.
"Sir, Are You All Right?"
Why is a foreign conductor asking me questions in English?
When the heck did I get on a foreign train?
No, no, I wasn't on a train before...
Cody shook his head hard, trying to confirm that everything in front of him wasn't an illusion.
Unfortunately, everything in front of him felt incredibly real. The slightly cold air, the icy train car metal, the scratches and damage on the carriage details, and the roaring sound of the train all proved the reality of this world.
"But wasn't I staying up late writing?"
Cody desperately tried to recall his last memory. It seemed he was too sleepy while writing and collapsed on the keyboard.
Maybe I was too tired from staying up late and fell asleep, and now I'm dreaming. Or maybe some boring reality show crew is pulling a prank on me?
He thought to himself.
As he was thinking, Cody stood up and sat in a nearby seat. At this time, the conductor was still asking about his condition. Seeing that this passenger remained silent, the conductor couldn't help but feel a little scared.
Of course, there's nothing to be afraid of with normal passengers, but the train only had one last stop left, the terminal station.
That terminal station was called Gotham.
It's possible for normal people to go to Gotham City, but it's unlikely for normal people to go there.
He steeling himself, asked again, but the passenger still didn't respond, just staring at him with a strange, eerie look.
That look was incredibly unsettling. Just being looked at, the conductor couldn't bear the psychological pressure anymore, apologized, and fled in a hurry.
Cody saw the conductor leave and then turned his head to look out the train window. On the slightly misty glass, he could see the gloomy sky outside and the city in the darkness under the rain clouds: towering clock towers, densely packed skyscrapers, bizarre Gothic architecture, and faintly visible in the distance, the messy, low-rise buildings, as well as various English slogans and signs.
Clock towers? Slums? English signs?
Given the architectural style, this city is clearly in Western.
"Where did this bring me? Is this still my home country?"
Cody muttered unconsciously.
"Woo—"
Just as he was still thinking about why he was dreaming of a foreign country he had never been to, the train's whistle blew, then it began to slow down and soon pulled into the station.
Looking at the unfamiliar platform design and the blonde, blue-eyed Western faces standing nearby, Cody stood frozen by the window.
"Clang"
The train doors opened, and passengers carrying luggage and bags of all sizes walked out of the carriages onto the platform outside.
Cody was swept along by the crowd towards the outside of the train. At this moment, he felt like a rootless piece of duckweed, drifting aimlessly towards the unknown distance.
"Why am I still not waking up? Why is this dream still not ending..."
He walked off the train in a daze. After only a few steps, he suddenly stopped again, staring blankly at the English sign above the platform.
Gotham City
"?"
Cody, who had still wanted to deceive himself for a while longer, instantly broke down. Although he didn't know much English, he had seen enough superhero movies to know the significance of that English word.
"Damn it, which crazy bitch sent me to this hellhole!"
Almost in despair, Cody covered his face with his hands. He strongly suspected that he would be skinned, dismembered, and completely devoured by criminals in a dark alley on his first night in this city. As one of the cities with the highest crime rate in the entire United States, normal people here can be said to be few and far between, and there's not a single person who is pure and upright.
If a simple thief were in other cities, he would undoubtedly be an ordinary criminal; but if a person in Gotham City only stole without robbing or committing murder or arson, then he would be fully qualified to run for the title of a good citizen in Gotham City.
Seventy percent of the people in this city are gang members. Besides that, there are some world-class terrorist organizations, world-class killer syndicates, and the rest are some children, the wealthy, capitalists, and some lone-wolf supercriminals, plus the biggest lunatic in all of Gotham.
And world-class unlucky people, which are those who know nothing about this city and accidentally wander in.
As for the police? There isn't a single police officer in the precinct who has never cooperated with gangs or lunatics. This is a city permeated by darkness. If there's any place in this city that isn't dark, it might only be Cody, who has just arrived.
