Yea I'm not questioning people with long covid or lingering symptoms. I'm sure it happens. The world's a big place. But as far as I'm aware there's no known shingles to COVID's chicken pox. To assert so suggest some motivated reasoning!

Although the idea of covid reactivating spontaneously is probably nonsense, any covid infection can in theory give you long covid. Covid is a nasty virus but it’s not unique in that regard—our forbears always knew common viruses and other acute illnesses could fuck you up long term. They also seemed pretty aware that indefinite universal masking is intuitively inimical to a healthy society.

Pretty sure 50k people died of COVID between Jan and Sept 2023. You can argue we should consider that insignificant because it’s much less than in previous years (although our tracking systems for COVID cases and deaths are much worse in pretty much every respect), but not that people who advocate for masking shouldn’t compare it to things with a death toll in the 10s of thousands on a pure numbers basis.

The whole concept of a right to the best possible council (looking at you Neal Katyal, and Dershowitz of course) is such nonsense. They always just skip over the fact that they can deny a prospective client. I think they just like the idea of winning the hardest cases so they’ll take on anything that might give them a chance to flex and bend the law to their wills.

Alien stuff is the one conspiracy theory I don’t really understand psychologically. Normally, with this stuff, it seems like people trying to impose a cleaner order or narrative to events that have a dissatisfyingly complex one (a sort of folk element of Hypernomalization, say) and usually cast themselves on the heroic side of that order/narrative, opposing some relatively simple Evil Force at work. But with aliens it’s like… what’s in it for the believers? What evil are we opposing? Suppression of alien presence or technology… to what real end? What materially changes if the alien people are right? Civilization springs forward 1000 years, technologically? Big doubt that we could keep that under wraps. Idk. It’s all so nebulous.

I've had covid several times (TY daycare) and expressed on social that I seem to get less ill every time and credited that to the improved vaccines. Several! People told me that actually that doesn't matter because it's stored in your fat cells and can be released again any time to wreak havoc and give you long covid. I can find absolutely no evidence of this anywhere. It just seems like something perma-coviders have convinced themselves of.

Tangentially related to masking and right wingers. Early in the pandemic my dad got very upset when the local hardware store wouldn’t let him in without a mask and then told him they had some available for purchase (this was pretty early, before places just had boxes of them at the entrance). I asked him how it was different than costco charging him a membership fee to enter the store and he got really mad, saying he shouldn’t have to follow their health guidelines to enter the store. So I asked him if it would be wrong for them to kick me out if I took a shit on the floor in the middle of the store, which he didn’t appreciate either

I'm not sure if Matt is accurately describing the anti-Dobbs position here. I don't think that many people were arguing that Dobbs was bad because the net number of abortions would go down, rather that people facing new abortion restrictions would be immiserated and endangered regardless of what the number did. If you were in Oklahoma in 2023 with a life-threatening complication getting denied treatment by skittish doctors it didn't much matter to you if the nationwide number went up or down.
