guess i shouldve been more clear: we've been together 14 years, but she still feels like she should know more about politics etc even though it doesnt interest her, while I write about it constantly on social media. And she watches lifestyle and gossip content and is invested in cosmetics, clothing and interior decorating. And she knows I barely spend money so she feels bad for spending money on her interests. So thats the dynamic.

Platonism always sounded weird to me, and I know the catholic theology has a lot of “neo-platonism”, how do you understand those ideas in terms of being a catholic? I was born a catholic and practice but I don’t really know anything about these things.
JOE
Amazing response. Wasn't expecting the cat-and-mouse-taco bell stuff. Thanks guys!

baby you can’t argue someone else into faith you gotta just practice it and hope your good example clicks at some point. and decide whether you can live with the possibility that it never will!

as someone raised by and around lots of hippies, my experience is that kids raised around pot either become huge dysfunctional potheads themselves or are just not that interested, depending on the parents’ approach. I have always been extremely circumspect and moderate around drug use and never really felt pot had an social cache or seemed cool; my friends who started smoking young had parents who smoked in front of them and had a dysfunctional/dependent relationship with pot and were just generally really permissive and uncomfortable being seen as authority figures.

I thought the Covid takes on last podcast were nuts — its seems strange to have the risk of long Covid etc priced at literally 0. But beyond that, may should dig into the farm bill, which will be coming up for a vote in 2024, it included both rural farm/crop insurance and SNAP, and is also important for climate and would be a ncie wonky piece of legislation to try and work on. Thanks, y’all are a joy.

How do you two feel about the concept of "self-discipline"? Would you describe yourselves as disciplined people? Do you try to raise Jane and Claire to be disciplined? Or do you think about getting things done some other way?
Matt
For Matt: what do you think is the most effective case for egalitarianism as a good in itself (if you think it is). I.e., the best case for why we should prioritize equality over sufficient minimums? Is it just Rawlianism with some Bruenig tweeks?

It seems like you guys have some pretty strong feelings about your parents (especially Liz’s). My parents have been a difficult part of our lives since my wife and I got married about a decade ago. Particularly because they have expressed (and continue to show) their disapproval of my wife being part of our family. Despite your apparent differences, you still spend a good amount of time with Liz’s parents. Because of our stark differences, we spend very little time with my parents. Any thoughts on 1) what to do about parents who dislike your spouse, and 2) should we try to spend more time with them despite their animosity toward my wife?
Matt
For Liz, I’ve always wondered if you are afraid your parents finding out about/listening to the podcast (unlikely as it may be), and/or your children listening to episodes when they grow up. Are you afraid they’d be offended or hurt by what you’ve said about them?

funny/interesting clare stories? I’m an only child & my bf has 5 siblings so I’m always interested to hear from him about how they interacted as kids and how they can be so different from one another from a young age

Wondering if Matt is familiar with the work of Nathan Fielder, one of the nations greatest trolls.

Liz wrote copious volumes of Fan Fiction in High School? We need the deets!

Liz, what are your thoughts on Martin Luther? I assume not good, but just curious if you think anything he wrote had merit or if anything positive came out of the Protestant Reformation, even if you regard it as broadly negative.
Pepijn Uitterhoeve
question for liz: my girlfriend sometimes feels constrained and judged for liking or doing certain things even though I don't think these feelings are warranted and Im not judgmental whatsoever (and I tell her this clearly) Do you have a similar dynamic with Matt? That even though he says something is fine, you sometimes feel judged or guilty or something?
Owen
Matt, does the deficit matter? Should I be concerned about something bad happening if the deficit goes up in perpetuity? I know you’re not a fan of modern monetary theory, and it seems like the discourse typically breaks down into deficit-mongering libertarians or MMT type thinking, curious if you have a different angle on the matter.
Sam Sturm
Does Matt support the Packers because they’re publicly owned? How would a government-owned NFL team work?

Came here to ask this too! I’m concerned parenthood will put an end to my medicinal choofing, partly because of the hypothetical risk of my future children snitching to my folks about it…

Do Jane and Clare go with you to church on Sundays? Are they going to go through confirmation etc? Looking at starting a family with my agnostic husband and these Qs come up. Curious to your methods.

Why Rawls instead of Habermas? Typical political theory grad student will say they’re two faces of the same coin but Rawls privileges liberalism over democracy and Habermas privileges democracy over liberalism. Do you buy that? And (much) more broadly: where do democratic politics fit into the welfare state?

My guess is Gen Alpha is going to be the most anti-weed generation in generations because all their parents smoke casually and openly so it'll seem lame and uncool.

For Liz, my friend asked me to be her baby’s godmother. She and her husband are raising the baby with both Catholic and Jewish traditions. For example, Baptism will be followed by Seder the next day. Any advice? Things to read, christening gifts, just generally how to support the little guy growing in faith
Molly
What’s the best advice you’ve gotten (or given) about how to discern/navigate big career changes?
Ivan McGillicuddy
Matt, have you read the Auten and Splinter paper on income inequality in the United States? They claim that top income shares of national income are way lower than reported and that the change in top income share since the 80's has been far slower than previously stated. FT were very quick to praise them since it's a challenge to Piketty and others.

Which model of induction stove do you have, and do you like it? We’re ready to make the move, but there are so damn many options. We’re thinking GE Profile currently.

Liz, how do you plan to eventually discuss your use of the laser lettuce with the kids? My daughter is 9 and I know that someday in her teens she is going to smell the reefer at a party and wonder why it smells so much like dad’s home office at night.

what are your views on indoor air & environmental quality? Matt is an induction stove enthusiast, but do you have any thoughts on things like electric heating, CO2 monitors, home air filters, plastics & material offgassing etc?

Another Q I have been meaning to ask for a while, how does that gang feel about The Platypus society, and the notion that the left is dead which is good as it will encourage *real* class consciousness to emerge (and not be captured by a faux-leftist vangaurd)

Can Matt provide a rundown of his gear for hiking/backpacking. I'm interested in things like: Boots, backpack, tent, sleeping bag. How much they cost, what brand, and how he picked them. Question for the team: If a fan ever ran into you two in public, how would you want them to say hi (or maybe you'd rather Brueheads just stay away!). Happy new year!
JOE
Can Matt reflect on his Nader days and the current state of Naderism
