Tired talking point. So a country can never wage war because the enemy will inevitably regroup and fight back? How many Nazi and Japanese imperialist attacks do you see against U.S. forces in Germany and Japan today? Go look up U.S. approval ratings in Vietnam today, they'll shock you. Eternal lasting peace is obviously impossible until the eschaton, war is a reality of life. But pacification, however temporary, is possible.

Funny that Liz would bring up the issue of freedom of speech when most of the people that lost their jobs over palestine posting are the same people that 5 years ago made sure people lost their jobs over posting a pepe meme. That most states are and ought to be ethno-states (what is a nationality if not an ethnicity? what is a nation-state, supposedly the basic political unit of our time, if not an ethno-state?) is just taken for granted in the discourse nowadays, though the consequences are both horrifying and obvious. Heartening to hear some pushback. I recently read some pieces by Hannah Arendt on Palestine, from the late 40s. She seemed to think that a federal state in Palestine with strong protections for the Jewish minority was the best solution. She also argued, rather convincingly, that any long-term solution, ethical or otherwise, would require meaningful reconciliation with the region's Arab population. Even the elimination of a Palestinian population in Israel-controlled territory - whether by emigration, or other means - couldn't change that.

Listening to Matt and Liz talk about the fire incident is literally the closest representation I've ever heard to how my boyfriend and I often discuss things. I just want space to bitch and be miserable and stressed about it and my boyfriend will be like "But it's fine. I'm chilling, relaxed, under control. I took care of it" causing great animosity and strife. Also representation in the bipolar II realm. It's a weird beast of a thing to live with and I send my love and prayers.

Solidarity with Liz and all who struggle with deep dark depression episodes. I recently came out of one of the roughest ones in my entire life where suicide ideation became so pervasive that I actually started devising ways I could take myself out so my family would still collect on my life insurance policies…. I don't know if it gets any darker than that, considering also that I absolutely could not bring myself to speak to anyone about it. But in the end, after seriously thinking and writing about doing it for several months, I found a little bit of strength in facing that head-on… came to the somewhat obvious conclusion that being alive and depressed was more interesting than being dead. That helped me finally snap out of it and now it's hard for me to believe how close I came… Thank you so much, Liz for having the courage to be open about your struggle. It has really helped me.

Hamas isn't going to survive this. Hezbollah and Iran have basically said "you're on your own with this one, guys." 10,000 deaths is a tragedy, but this round of the war was initiated by Hamas; they knew what the response from Israel was going to be and they went ahead and went on a rampage anyways because they thought the rest of the region was going to join in. Gazan civilian deaths were priced in. The blood is on their hands.

Israel responded appropriately when it repelled the initial Hamas attack. Everything done subsequent to that seems harder to justify as it does not seem like killing over 10,000 people will plausibly accomplish Israel’s stated goal of freeing the hostages or ending the threat of terrorism. I think the same logic as abortion bans applies here. If your chosen course of action, in this case killing tons of people via bombing, doesn’t actually accomplish your stated goals, what is the point of the action?

I guess I'm wondering why the resistance to using a can filled with water. That's what everyone I know does. I would suggest definitely using a metal receptical and definitely having the water in there. I have seen plastic catch on fire and burn down a gazebo because the cigarette butts caught each other on fire. Sadly, smoking is a hazard to everyone. And even wet butts can reignite if you throw them in a spot where there's debris. Blah blah, but you know, stay safe everyone.
