my mom also prioritized teaching my to buy stuff at the store by myself and contended with similar stuff. I also would walk or bike to school. my neighborhood was pretty safe with lots of paths but I know kids who were shuttled around. the biggest thing I noticed was the kids who spent less time independent alone had less of a sense of self or genuine interests, etc

Line of the day comes from Matt: If we’ve got all this shit, we might as well use it😂😂😂 We live in what would probably be considered a “white light neighbourhood”. But for the past 10 years, Inglewood Drive has been transformed into Kringlewood by about 70 16’ inflatable lawn Santas. We have literally become a seasonal must-visit attraction, covered each year by local press and tv. By mid-December it’s a challenge to back the car out of the driveway and during the 2020 covid lock-down, day and night, our sidewalks were full of families looking for something fun to do. There are a few grinches (hubby is still traumatized by the youtube video of someone filming from their car and just missing hitting his that was parked on the street). The young family who had that first Santa have moved on, but the tradition continues, with outgoing homeowners leaving their Santas behind for new families to enjoy.

I’d like to think the ambient noises and technical errors are the most charming part of the low effort/low quality guarantee. It’s the little things like the outdated intro song, the dreaded annual return of the long cough, throat clearing, lighter flicking, Matt fucking up the Rick Perry outro for the 100th time, kids screaming in the background, the obvious inhaling and exhaling of weed smoke, audio hardware malfunctions and sudden unexpected spider attacks that make this podcast great. If Marty Bruenig had a computer from this century and basic internet access he would be incredibly proud of this podcast. And if this program is good enough for Marty, it’s good enough for me!

I just heard the term ‘countdown calendar’ today. Seems an irony given what the countdown is for? Also, can anyone tell me if Americans ever call it the ‘silly season’ too? Or do we just really like an excuse to get drunk repeatedly here.
