Japan will be fucking weird. I suggest you avoid Tokyo and never take a taxi there it's too expensive. Thailand you can eat anything on the street. If you walk one block out of the tourist area in Bangkok you can get a real taxi that will use the meter. If you get in a cab and they haggle about the price, just get out at a stop light and get in the cab behind you. Cambodia is a free for all.

Bruhead in Japan here. Depending on how much time you have, my advice is to take the train out into the country. Get far away from anywhere "meant" for tourists. Walk down a rice paddy field. Listen to the cicadas. Hike to a small shrine in the forest. Eat lunch at a family-owned diner. Learn how to say "good morning", "excuse me", and "thank you", and people will be excited that you know any Japanese at all.
