Alan Rickman said in an interview that they dropped him 40 feet onto one of those giant airbag cushion things for that final fall scene. Apparently that look of terror on his face as he falls is genuine because the film crew dropped him a second early on the countdown. They counted "3,2,1" and dropped him on "1" instead of "go." You can see the surprise on his face.
