Chapter 2 Dragon, Tiger, Turtle, and Phoenix
Ben and Howwl were hanging out. Tennyson had the miraculous on his left hand. “As the Kwami of Probability I have power over luck, both good and bad.” Howwl explained. “When we transform, you’ll have access to my power, so luck will be on your side for the most part. You’ll be Super Lucky!”
“So that’s why stuff was working for that Hex guy?” Ben crossed his arms.
Howwl nodded. “He trapped me in the charm so he could channel my powers by force!” His fur was ruffled about it. “That jerk!”
If he was to cast his magic wildly, one of two things would happen, either something super lucky or super unlucky would happen. Even if he focused it on a person, he could tip the scales of probability, something good would happen for a time, then something bad would happen, depending on the luck the side effects varied. “At your current ability, you’ll be able to use my Misfortune Attacks three times before you power down, so use them wisely.”
“What only three?”
The Misfortune Attack was a unique little charge attack, while transformed one is blessed with good luck, which builds up the bad luck. In Hero mode he can then dish out the bad luck on an object or person to turn the tides of battle. “It’s my Ultimate Move!”
Howwl nodded. “Yes, you are lucky normally a beginner can only use a kwami’s power once before they transform back. You’ll have five minutes to find a safe place before you power down, and I’ll need to eat to recharge.” He could feel it, Ben’s spark, that’d give him an edge and as his powers grow he’d be able to use more kwami power in the future.
‘I’m so lucky, I really hit the jack pot with masters!’ He thought happily.
Hex’s method was taking power by force and it sucked, especially for the kwami. He didn’t want to share the power with anyone, not even with the Kwami. ‘Don’t worry guys we’ll find you and rescue you!’
“So let’s get this straight, you can only use your ultimate move three times before Ben transforms back?” Gwen asked, before laughing.
“Hey quit laughing, it’s not like your powers are so great. The watch times out to you know!” Ben shot back.
“Oh man, even when you get powers they way worse than mine!” Gwen shrugged. “The omnitrix may time out now and then, but I can still use my powers freely until I do.”
Ben huffed. “I’ll just work smarter, not harder!”
“Tsk, tsk, tsk, you shouldn’t compare your alien powers to the powers of us kwami. You’ll see, together Ben and me we’ll be a fantastic team. He’s got the potential to be a great hero!”
Tennyson smiled. “Thanks Howwl!”
“Besides, if we can find my siblings, I’m sure they’ll help you as well. Each of us kwami have our own unique transformations, and as you get stronger you could tap into more of our secrets!” Howwl said. Despite being wolf-like as the kwami of probability good things always happened to him so he liked to share in the fortune. ‘As long as my siblings don’t get too possessive, it should be fine!’
In the old days, when they each had individual masters, and said masters passed on the kwami from one master to the next. The kwami sometimes would brag about the masters they had. They tended to get attached and get irked, if the master transformed into another hero. It was usually the kwami who lacked a master for a LONG period of time who got possessive.
Howwl didn’t want to admit it but he was excited to transform. “Let’s give it a try!”
“Ready!” He had been given what he needed. “Howwl, transform me!” The kwami was pulled into the miraculous.
Magic power began to overflow, the transformation felt long but happened in seconds. Ben’s clothes disintegrated, the miraculous gained more detail. His color spread was a mix of black and green.
A green top and leggings appeared, he gained a belt with various utility pouches. From the belt formed black baggy shorts, on his shoulders formed a thick black jacket with a green 10 on the chest. A hand waves over his face and forms a mask, the whites of his eyes turn black, making his green eyes become a striking emerald with a mystical glow to them. His hair grows a bit and becomes slightly wild. Two wolf-like ear accessories appear in his hair. A green fingerless glove appears on his right hand with black paw pads in the palm, and black shoes appear on his feet, the bottoms of his shoes have green marks on the areas for pads. “Lobix!”
“Another one of your cringy names, it’s as bad as the ones you give my aliens!”
Ben crossed his arms. “They needed names, besides what would you call a lucky hero?”
Gwen smirked. “If it were me, I’d call myself Lucky Girl!” Ben rolled his eyes.
-x-
Ben’s transformation allowed Hex to track him. “I see so he managed to free the kwami, this might be more interesting!”
He tracked Ben down and attacked Lobix. “Surrender the kwami child, you don’t know the powers you wield.”
“I know enough, I know his siblings are in the those other charms of yours!” Lobix cracked his knuckles. “I’ll be taking them back!”
“You can try child, but you will fail!” Hex’s magic was amplified by one of the charms. He called it the Charm of Power, which increased both the power and impact of his spells. Howwl was keeping watch inside the miraculous.
‘That’s gotta be Roaar!’ When one charm glowed he noticed Hex was able to manipulate either Fire, Water, Wind, or Earth. ‘That’s gotta be Longg!’
With Ben transformed all his natural abilities were amplified so while he was a kid, he was able to hit like a truck and fight back against Hex pretty well. His soccer skills and self defense courses coming in handy.
When Hex showed he could conjure barriers and shields of energy, Howwl recognized them. ‘That’s Wayzz!’
With Gwen’s help they landed some hits, but he seemed to be able to heal. ‘That must be Finnix!’ So Hex had the Tiger, the Dragon, the Turtle, and the Phoenix Kwami all nabbed.
Hex managed to knock Gwen and Max away and gave chase to Ben. From a haunted looking house, to some catacombs, and into a graveyard. The other two Tennysons following after them. “Your luck is running out child, sooner or later you must use your ultimate move. Then this game will end!” Ben’s luck has been really good making it so he avoids Hex’s attacks and often turns things to his favor.
“You are just taking the kwami’s power, you are no magician, you are just a thief!” This pisses off Hex.
“You think you understand the mystical arts!” Using an incantation Hex brings motion to the motionless and sends some gargoyles to fight Gwen/Four Arms and Grandpa Max. “Your talk has cost them their lives!”
“No!” Lobix calls out.
Max pulls out a blaster. “Don’t worry about us Lobix, protect yourself!”
Gwen snatches up a sword. “Yeah, this is easy!” With one swing she cuts through the stone creatures as if they were butter.
The brunette had enough of this and decided to try and finish this.
“Misfortune!” Ben blasted Hex with bad luck energy, this causes him to be knocked into a mausoleum and the building collapsed on him.
The master magician was able to break free from the rubble. “You blew your one shot to stop me!” Hex cast another spell using his staff to shoot lightning at Ben.
Lobix dipped and dodged and hid behind a tree. The magic user chanted something and the tree began to ensnare Ben. “Hey!”
“Little fool, I studied the magics of the kwami long before sealing them. Their ultimate move is quite impressive, and the magical gifts they bring when transformed are cute, but there is a limit to how much they can share.” He went to take Ben’s miraculous.
“Misfortune!” Lobix cast, surprising Hex as lightning struck the tree, causing Ben to be free and the tree to fall on Hex.
“How are you able to use the move more than once?” He groaned.
“That’s my secret!” Not that he had any idea as to why.
Max and Gwen finish off the gargoyles. Ben manages to throw a rock and land right between Hex’s eyes. “Nice pitch!”
“Thanks I’ve been working on it!”
Hex flies into the air, conjuring up a storm. “Your luck has run out child!”
Ben sets up a round stone, and with one kick sends it airborne and it hits Hex right in the crotch. He tears up and falls to the ground. “Luck only gets you so far.” Gwen picks Hex up and puts him in a coffin.
Lobix uses the last Misfortune on the charms, causing them to crack and break, freeing the other kwami. “We are free, we are free!”
Gwen’s omnitrix beeps and she returns to human form. “Great there are more of them.”
Ben’s miraculous beeps and after a couple of minutes he also returns to normal. Howwl is drained but happy. “Brothers!” Hunger can wait, he was so happy to see his siblings.
It was time for introductions, while that happened Max called the police, with Hex de-charmed it was time for him to go to jail. “This is Lonng, the Kwami of Heroism.” The dragon-like Kwami bowed and Ben returned the gesture. “This is Roaar the Kwami of Exaltation!”
“Hehe, so this is the one who freed us, nice thanks a lot!” Roaar said.
“This is brother Wayzz the Kwami of Protection!” The turtle-like kwami bowed politely.
“Thank you for freeing us!”
“No problem!”
“Last but not least is our bro Finnix the Kwami of Healing!” Like the other kwami Finnix was based off a creature a phoenix, he was red with an orange belly, he had tail feathers going from yellow, to green, to blue, with the tips being purple. He had a blue feather that was curled back on his head.
“Yes thank you for helping us, but we should be leaving, let’s go!” He said turning his back to them.
“WHAT?!” Ben, Howwl, Lonng, Roaar, and Wayzz gasped.
“We were captured some time ago, the others are who knows where, we can’t dilly dally about.”
Ben moved around. “But I can help, I want to help!”
Longg came up beside him. “He has the spirit of a hero.”
Wayzz, Roaar, and Howwl flew over to stand with Ben. “He saved us maybe he can help.”
“He was a great wolf hero, he used my powers well he can handle this!” Finnix was one of the elder siblings, so a lot of the kwami looked up to him and respected his decisions. The kwami could feel Ben was special, he had a spark, which meant he was a fledgling magic user. “Give him a chance!”
“He’s too young, putting him in danger and having him fight our battles wouldn’t be appropriate.” Finnix crossed his arms. There was no telling what happened to the others, they could be caught, sealed, being used by dark desires, or they could just be sleeping.
Ben crossed his arms. “Why can’t I help if I want to, besides you guys need a home you can crash with me, it’ll be safer for you here.”
“Out of the question.” Finnix hissed.
“Then let’s put it to a vote!” Howwl suggested. There were five of them there, so majority would rule. “Who wants to stay with Ben?”
The four kwami raised their hands. “Very well, but don’t think I’ll be giving you my power!” Finnix huffed.
“What’s his problem?”
Longg sighed. “Brother Finnix means well, he doesn’t hate you or anything in fact he’s so harsh because he likes you. As the Kwami of Healing he hates seeing people suffer and get hurt. Having you fight our battles and put yourself in danger, it’s hard for him.”
Ben just smiled. “I’ll win him over eventually!” Howwl slumps.
“Hungry!” Ben chuckled and got him some food.
Out of all of them Finnix had the most complicated history with past masters and having used his power without one had some shocking consequences. He cared about life, and while understood the nature of life and death, pain was something he didn’t like.
Hex was arrested, having lost his staff in the fight, he was mostly powerless.
To be continued...Small Problem
The Kwami sing to try and find their comrade, and even share with Ben their abilities. Tennyson thinks of using two kwami at once, much to Finnix’s disappointment. They track down the Kwami of Memory to a Water Park and he joins the family, but at this park they take height requirements to the extreme, neither Gwen or Ben can get on any rides.
