Chapter 10 Shinigami vs Quincy
“Class we have a new student joining us…”
Ichigo was having a heck of a first day of school. On his way he stumbled across some jerks having a larger young man chained up. They were taunting and laughing at him, having taken his precious medallion. No one else was around so Ichigo stepped in and kicked their asses.
He brought the big guy to the hospital and met a tall and handsome man with white hair and glasses on his face. The man seemed cold when addressing him, taking the young man known as Sado off his hands and swiftly asking him to leave.
The orangette didn’t press the matter, he had to get to school, but he could also tell by instinct this guy was dangerous. It was weird without his senses but his instincts were still strong.
“Ichigo Shiba!” He made it to school but he was late, getting a small lecture from the teacher.
Upon seeing him the class began to murmur and whisper. News of a transfer student had already stirred the gossipers and news hounds, with Ichigo’s reveal causing a stir.
Had Ichigo’s senses been sharper he’d have been able to catch some of the things being said about him. It was all such a jumble and they were trying to be quiet about it. The chatter made Ichigo’s ears burn it was such an odd feeling knowing you should be able to do something but couldn’t.
The chatter ranged from he looked like trouble to he looked hot. Ichigo got the weirdest sense from the people around him. ‘It doesn’t matter, just gotta make use of this gigai for now.’ After putting Sora into training Ichigo fetched a gigai from Kisuke Urahara.

It was quite the confrontation. The man was a criminal in Soul Society, the official record was that he had been banished from Soul Society, but truth was he had escaped. Soul Society didn’t have the resources to deal with the man, so they made an arrangement giving Kisuke a form of peace so long as he assisted Soul Reapers stationed in the human world. “Are you really a criminal?” Ichigo asked him.
Kisuke smirked. “Would you believe me if I told you the truth?” The two stared at each other for a long moment. A heavy tension between them growing with each passing second. Kisuke reached into his robes, giving off the impression he was going for a weapon, only to pull out a fan. “You are too young, best do your job!” He waved his fan, waving Ichigo off as well.
“You act like a fool, but I can sense you are a cunning beast. My senses might be dulled but I’m not blind. When I’m back at my best I’d love to hear your story, we can have tea.” Kisuke eyed him over his fan. This boy was quite the beast himself. He didn’t outright deny the possibility there was a truth, but was cunning enough to know that if someone was skilled enough to get over on him, they’d be dangerous enemy and in his current state he’d be dead.
‘How interesting!’ The fan hid a smile.
“If you need a place to stay do come around, I’m sure we can find room for you.” Ichigo nodded and left.

Ichigo thought this would be a good chance to train his body some more, he always relied on his special senses. With them it was easy to read people, telling things about someone that they themselves might not fully understand. From his human studies schools were a place not just for education but also learning human interaction and social skills. At the academy he was kept at a distance because of his title so the experience was a bit different. Here no one knew he was a Shiba, more accurately no one knew the weight or importance of that name.
Not many knew this pain, outside of Rukia Kuchiki from what he gathered. No matter her accomplishments it was expected of her she was a Kuchiki. She was on another level from the rest of her class. Ichigo felt sorry for her having gone through similar experiences. With this gigai he could stay hidden from hollows until he needed to take action.
As he took his seat he felt a pair of eyes on him. ‘What is this?’
This gaze seemed to fall on him now and then throughout the day, sure everyone was looking at him, observing him, but this gaze held anger.
Sado showed up covered in bandages, he gave some excuse before taking his seat. ‘So he went to this school, he looked older.’ The teacher seemed too scared to ask or press the matter.
At lunch the students interested in Ichigo swarmed him, asking him heaps of questions. He recited the cover story undercover shinigami were told to give, throwing in some truths about himself to make the story more believable.
Orihime approached him and was very welcoming. Ichigo greeted her warmly and more open then anyone else. A girl named Tatsuki took offense to this and tried to get in Ichigo’s face about his intentions. Ichigo just laughed. “I have no such intentions I prefer the company of men.” This surprised the girls and the guys, the reaction was mixed. Some girls seemed to lose interest in Ichigo, while others seemed more interested the flames of moe burning in their souls making their gazes all the more intense. ‘Did I say something wrong?’ He had no idea.
Before the day ended, Ichigo felt an angry gaze upon him, time and time again. ‘It’s not a hollow, but what could…’ He thought he had his answer when those thugs from this morning showed up at school looking for him. ‘Were they spying on me?’
They took two boys hostage a brown haired boy named Keigo, and a black haired boy named Mizuiro. Ichigo stepped in, but the thugs thought they had an edge wielding weapons. He had to fight back a laugh, knives, chains, pipes, to a normal person this was dangerous, but for an aged shinigami this was a joke.
These guys were not skilled fighters, first year swordsmen had better stances than these fools. They might as well have come at him with sticks. Effortlessly Ichigo tore through them, bare handed, he disarmed them. He flipped guys twice his size and took them down.
Tatsuki saw things from a distance and even she had to whistle at the technique. ‘This guy’s good.’
A knife was brought to Keigo’s throat. “Don’t move you little freak!” This gave Ichigo pause, the brunette looked terrified. It was clear he thought he was gonna die. “Put your hands up unless you want this guy’s blood on your hands!”
‘There’s no way, he doesn’t know me, why would he surrender for someone he doesn’t know.’ Keigo freaked out.
To his surprise Ichigo raised his hands in surrender. “What are you doing!?” Keigo shouted.
“Shut up!” He held the knife closer to Keigo’s throat, making him cry. “Get up you morons!” He shouted at his men. “Don’t move, let my men beat on you until we are satisfied and we’ll let this one go.”
“Fine…” These guys meant to kill him, this situation was more annoying for the Shiba heir. The men got up and were focused on him, this went too well so they were wary of Ichigo. So when he lowered his hands they flinched.
Ichigo crossed his arms. “What are you doing, put those hands up, do you wanna see this bitch die!”
“Nope!” As soon as he spoke the guy got hit hard in the back of his head, dropping the knife. “Hey there Sado.” The guy gave him a thumbs up. “Get that guy out of here okay?”
Sado nodded and he grabbed Keigo and Mizuiro and moved them away from the fight. With a smile Ichigo went wild kicking their asses and taught them a harsh lesson about fighting dirty.
When the teachers finally showed up it looked like Ichigo was in the wrong here. He was in for a long lecture, even with Mizuiro and Keigo speaking up for him. Sado also spoke up for him, but the teachers didn’t take him at his word.
The big guy also had a bad reputation for fighting, though again in the worst way possible. Though with Keigo and Mizuiro’s backing Ichigo avoided expulsion.
Sado met up with Ichigo after school and offered him his home to crash as a thank you for saving his life and medal. Ichigo accepted. It was a good arrangement as Sado didn’t talk much, so he didn’t ask Ichigo a lot of

The days passed, Ichigo sneaking out to do his job while Sado slept. Thankfully with his power hidden by gigai the hollows remained most active at night. In the morning Ichigo patrolled for souls to send to the other side. He tried to be the normal human he needed to be to keep his cover, though he seemed to vanish in the day when his phone went off.
Sado had a feeling something was off about his new friend. He found his body at lunch time with no pulse, only for Ichigo to come back just fine. The same thing happened in the morning and once when he woke up in the middle of the night.
He learned the truth after finding a talking parakeet with a boy’s soul inside it. Ichigo was a soul reaper and he fought monsters called hollows and helped ferry souls beyond. Being touched by a hollow awakened power inside him. This did give Ichigo back up whenever he needed to leave his gigai around.
Ichigo’s lack of senses gave him some trouble or else he’d have noticed Sado, Keigo, and Tatsuki having spirit awareness a sign of potential powers. There was another boy who had powers and since his arrival had been having issues with Ichigo.

He didn’t realize the trouble until something weird started happening, he was getting alerted for hollows only for them to be gone by the time he arrived. ‘What is happening?’
“Confused Soul Reaper?” A boy clad in white appeared.
“Who...who are you?” The boy adjusted his glasses.
“Are your senses that inferior, how disappointing…” Ichigo glared at him.
“Name yourself.”
“Isn’t it polite to introduce yourself before asking someone their name?” Ichigo twitched in annoyance.
“You are young, I believe you are from my class so I already introduced myself to you.” Uryu was taken aback by that.
“Well then...I am Uryu Ishida, the last of the quincy!!!” The orangette’s eyes widened.
“A quincy…” He recognized that name from his history lessons. “That’s not possible.”
“So you know of the quincy, that makes this easy. I challenge you Soul Reaper, face me in combat!” Ichigo blinked.
“No.” Things were quiet for a moment.
“I challenge you soul reaper!” Uryu pointed at him.
“No.” Another pause.
“What do you mean no, I challenge you for the honor of the quincy, as a soul reaper you must accept!”
“Sorry...no…” Ichigo left manipulating the reishi to take to the air.
“Wait come back here!” Uryu gave chase, but Ichigo managed to ditch him.
‘A quincy huh...that’s a surprise…’ He thought and went home.

The next day at school Uryu came after him. “Shiba...I…”
“Nope...not interested!” He waved the quincy off.
“Fight me!”
“Not gonna happen.” He rubbed his ear.
“This is a noble duel we must fight!”
“We really don’t.”
“If you know about the quincy then you have to face me!”
“I do know about the quincy, and that’s exactly why I’m not fighting you.”
“Accept my challenge!”
“Never gonna happen!” He plugged his ears.
Uryu began tugging on his arms and the two scuffled. “When did Uryu and Ichigo get so close?” Keigo asked.
“Weird, but Ichigo is unique in his own way, so shouldn’t be too surprising.” Mizuiro said.
Uryu was being quite the pest, but he was very determined. After school he even came after him in his quincy armor. “Again with this?”
“You are gonna fight me Shiba!”
“I don’t think I will.”
“We shall have a contest of who can kill the most hollows, thus proving who’s better!” Ichigo’s eyes widened.
“Are you crazy?!”
“I have my reasons, so we shall fight!” He revealed some hollow bait.
“Wait!” Ichigo gasped. Ishida broke the bait.
RRROOOOOOAAAAAARRRR!
