You're asking the right questions. I hope the answers satisfy you.

To add on to my comment, I wonder who sits down and thinks first, Mitchell, Alora, or maybe it is Revos who tells them to think. Alora is trying to fight a war. She risked a lot to bring Mitchell to Awenor and if he doesn't want to help, she needs a plan B. She was already willing to drag him away from Earth, so drafting him isn't that much of a step further. The interesting thing is just what does she think he can do. Even if he is bound to Awen, how does that help her get rid of Milandris? Her description didn'ty suggest the king gets militarily effective powers, just a healthier land. How does that help overthrow a usurper?

Interesting story and I like the way you are subverting the tropes. That the chosen one doesn't want any part of it is different. Although I think in his place I might have tried to get some more information first. For that matter, the process of gaining the information might have eased the blow to Alora. If he asked, just how what am I supposed to do to help Awenor when I have no combat or leadership skills, she might grasp that he is not the best choice. On the other hand, if she told him that Awen could give him those skills and improve his abilities, he might grasp that this isn't hopeless. However, I wonder who is going to think of a compromise first. For that matter, Alora can just tell him no she will not send him back. He can either volunteer or be drafted. She could also tell him that she will send him back once they have freed Awenor from Milandris. She can stress that his only chance to return to earth is to aid her in restoring Awenor. She would be correct, since his only alternatives are fleeing and hoping he can find someone who can send him back out of the kindness of their hearts, surrendering to Milandris hoping that he will send him home instead of just killing him, or defeating Milandris and hoping Alora will send him home after Awenor is freed. The question then is what is the actual situation. It looks like a multi-year conspiracy has decapitated the government. However, who is Milandris? Is he another ruler who seeks to add Awenort to his holdings or is he a conspirator seeking to rule the country for himself? That matters, because it affects how much he has in resources. A ruler of another country can draw on that country;'s resources and troops. A conspirator only has the resources of his conspiracy. For that matter, we know he has wiped out the Onyx knights and most of the guards, along with the king. However, is there a resistance movement? Are there remnants of the guards still holding out? How is Milandris governing? Is he using his own people or has he just made himself king and expected the government to continue under his new management?
