Won't have to wait long. They name it in the next chapter.

Was gonna come here to say this.

Yes, but I doubt that fully understanding the world is even possible. Still, he needs to try to understand as much about the land he is here to fix and rule as he can manage. He also needs to realize that he doesn't know everything and talk to people and keep learning. In particular, he really needs to have a talk with Allora and Lerthelin about all the things that are dangerous to people. He has learned a fair amount about this world, but he needs to know about, for example, all the wildlife that can injure or kill him. As humans in modern societies, we have all learned from childhood to look both ways and be careful when crossing a street. If you aren't careful, you could get hit by a car. Mitchell doesn't have that life information from living in this world. He needs to recognize that and learn it.

Also a good instinct to want to fully understand the world before deciding what parts of it need changing. Some parts of it almost certainly will, but Mitchell needs to fully understand things first.

KITTY! Yay, not gonna lie that little head bump into Mitchell’s leg at the end made me trust and love it completely. I wonder what they’re going to name it? Part of me has a feeling that even though Lethelin had the most adverse reaction to it out of the group, she’s gonna end up adoring the little murder-floof… Also, I’m not sure if I’m remembering this correctly, but I recall something about Awen having a connection to both the land as well as the animals, so my suspicion is that the feeling Mitchell is getting has some actual merit.

It looks like a displacer beast, but I agree it isn't one because it has a different name and expected different behavior. IIRC displacer beasts are chaotic evil and kill for the fun of it. I expect this one will be taught differently and will follow its rules like a lawful neutral.

DevonHexx

It’s not a displacer beast. But it’s not not a displacer beast either. Pretty sure writing in a displacer beast would be copywriter infringement, lol. I’ve always liked them as DnD critters. They are just so lethal and bad-ass. So when I was thinking of animal companions it was one I kept going back to. I’m using lore from the game as needed but discarding it when I want to. Creative license and all that.

Good up date, especially this part. "This world was filled with so many things that he didn’t know about. It wasn’t just that he didn’t know about them. It was that he didn’t even know what to ask. How did one condense an entire lifetime of knowledge about the different races, cultures, and practices into a handful of questions? How was Mitchell supposed to navigate this world?" This is a very good point. Mitchell, to borrow the phrasing from Secretary Rumsfeld is faced with things he knows and things he doesn't know. The biggest problem is probably all the things he doesn't know that he doesn't know. For example, there could be a scorpion-like critter that can spit venom like a spitting cobra. Mitchell has at least run into dragons in fairy tales and fantasy books/films, but he has no idea a spitting scorpion could exist so can not prepare for it. The only way he can find out about it without running into it is if he asks Allora and Lethelin to describe every venomous/poisonous creature they know about. The shadow kitten looks like an interesting addition to the group. The shadow cat description sounds a lot like a D&D displacer beast. Hopefully, the alignment isn't the same or can be helped by better upbringing.
