Even when it's necessary, it's not going to be easy for almost anyone. Necessity may help alleviate guilt later on, but if killing someone, especially up close and personal with a blade, is not an easy thing to do. Soldiers train as much as they do to make the process as automatic as possible, partly because how easy it is for them to freeze at the thought of actually taking a life. And it should be hard.

I’ve enjoyed the story thus far. Honestly though, I have never understood the need to have a main character wail and moan about a killing made in self defense. Perhaps I am simply overly pragmatic.

I always like to slide little Easter eggs into my stuff.

caleb slone

she feels like a real person, with flaws and blind spots.

the ratway? delvin? oh i'm loving this.

What mad scientists vat did you crawl out of? Is this really your first major work? This feels like I'm reading about a man with average emotional intelligence, and a woman who doesn't have a ton of experience who went through severe trauma in the military. REAL people. Not tropes

hawkshe .

Protect him? It feels as though all she does is find new and ingenious ways to hurt him, lol

DevonHexx

You’re not an exactly wrong. But we all process pain and trauma differently. When she’s scared or feeling vulnerable she tends to revert back to her training. To do what must be done to ensure the survival of Awen and the protection of Awenor. She is smart, capable, determined, and steadfast. But she is also stubborn to a fault at times and has a pretty big blind spot when it comes to that. She thinks she is doing what she needs to do to protect him and Awen.

Yeah, I don't feel sympathetic towards Allora at all. She's literally causing both herself and the mc pain for absolutely no reason. If anything I'm mad at her for this.

It didn't read like I was missing anything and it appears I miss read the title. Thx

The book is broken into a three act structure. If you go back to chapter 1 it says part 1, chapter 1. Part 2 starts with chapter 33. Part one covers Mitchell’s arrival in Tewadunn, his capture, release, and leaning to use his new powers. Part two covers him maturing into his new life. Part three will show his first steps in this new world as a leader.

Splatz

Is there meant to be a chapter 33, part 1?

DevonHexx

Communication is possible. There is a comment made by Allora in an earlier chapter where she mentions Ivaran was sending messages back to his commanders. There are magical means of sending messages but obviously it's not as efficient as a simple radio would be.

Josh

Among many other things Mitchell could do: this world and his world are interconnected, and he could attempt to facilitate technology uplift. A world in which people can rapidly communicate over long distances is one where people can call for help, or report a local authority abusing their power, or otherwise provide force-amplification that helps bring limited resources to where they're most needed in a timely fashion. That's in addition to increasing resources. A world with fewer desperate people is safer. A more peaceful world needs fewer forces concentrated in a few places for defense, making it possible to provide support and aid to more distant locations. Or, conversely, a world with more resources can create larger cities that amortize the costs of infrastructure across more people. But whatever Mitchell decides to do can only happen if he first wins.

Geo

Totally agree, Mitchell does have the power to change the world or he will eventually, but I also recognize the logistical problem of enforcing law and order in remote areas like where he finds himself currently. As far as I know there's not really any form of instant communication, and if there is it doesn't seem like it's accessible for common folk. That, coupled with the difficulty of traversing long distances, means that remote areas lack any form of expedient justice. So it likely comes down to whatever the local power decides. I'm honestly having a hard time thinking of a way he could change how remote areas handle things... unless teleportation exists in some form, it's kinda up to people to sort stuff out by themselves.

Josh

> So, what was he to do with this new reality? It sounded like they had courts after a fashion, and a sense of justice, but then there were battles and deaths like the ones that had happened that morning. In towns or villages without any sort of permanent law and order, was this just how things were handled? Well, Mitchell, if you succeed, you'll get to decide how your kingdom handles those kinds of problems, in all their complex and messy detail. If you think you can make your kingdom more just, for everyone, even those in distant towns and villages, more power to you, literally. Go win, and use your power to make the world better. That's the best possible use of power.
