It was the year 2012, and the Aconborn family was enjoying a serene evening in the living room. Joseph, the father, was engrossed in watching his favorite tennis player lose a Grand Slam, while Kristen, the mother, was occupied with playing Bejeweled on her phone. Aubrey, their youngest, sat watching cartoons on her tablet, wearing headphones to not disturb the delicate balance of the calm evening. However, the peaceful atmosphere was abruptly shattered when their 17-year-old son, Dev, came rushing down the stairs, sobbing uncontrollably.
Joseph was the first to react, swiftly leaping off the couch and approaching his son. “Where are you hurt?! What happened?!” he desperately asked while inspecting the snow leopard’s face and arms. The absence of any visible injuries only made it worse.
Kristen followed suit, just a moment behind. Like her husband, she tried to calm down the kid who would just not stop crying as if his leg was ripped off “Dev, are you ok?!”. A multitude of thoughts raced through her mind, trying to fathom the cause of her son's distress.
“Dev, for the love of god. Are you hurt?!” Joseph unconsciously shook his son with both hands, resembling a rattle toy.
Dev couldn't articulate his words, but he managed to shake his head, indicating that he was physically unharmed.
A sigh of relief escaped from both parents. Now it was Kristen's turn to delve into the investigation of what could possibly be causing their son's emotional turmoil. "Are you on drugs?".
Once again, Dev shook his head, denying any involvement with substances. He attempted to speak, but all that escaped his lips was a barely audible mumble.
Joseph stooped down to meet Dev at eye level. "Is the car ok?"
Dev, this time, nodded. The hysterical crying had subsided, but a lump in his throat prevented him from uttering any words.
“Dev, honey, snap out of it!” Kristen grew increasingly desperate, hindered by her son's inability to communicate. “We can’t help you if you don’t tell us what’s wrong”.
Still visibly shaken, Dev took a deep breath and cast his gaze downward, unable to make eye contact with his parents. "I think...".
“YES?!” Both parents exclaimed in unison.
Dev looked up again, tears streaming down his cheeks. “I THINK I’M GAY!”.
Joseph and Kristen stared at their teenage son in disbelief. The room fell silent once more, with only the sound of Dev's choked sobs and the television filling the air. They turned their heads to look at each other and burst into laughter. It felt as if a tremendous weight had been lifted from their shoulders.
“Dev,” Kristen managed to say between chuckles “We’ve known for YEARS”.
The young snow leopard, confused, terrified and emotional, could only cry harder. This only made his parents resume their laughter as they got closer to hug their son who they loved as who he was.
Aubrey, still wearing noise-canceling headphones, was completely oblivious of the events that just unfolded.

It had been three years since Dev had come out to his family and, subsequently, the entire town. Fortunately, most people had responded positively to the news. Unfortunately, besides Dev, the only other gay person in town was Mr. Jones, a 74-year-old carpenter.
As he strolled along the gravel path leading to his room, he couldn't help but admire his surroundings. The campus was massive, accommodating individuals from all walks of life. To his left, a group of goth kids were live reading Edgar Allan Poe. To his right, a mixed group of canines and felines were enjoying a game of frisbee. Nearby, some guys were playing Sublime through a Bluetooth speaker. The air was tinged with the distinct aroma of subpar weed. Welcome to college, Dev.
Upon opening the door to the residence hall, the scent of cannabis lingered in the air, causing him to wonder if it had trailed him or if everyone in this place was perpetually high. Everyone seemed friendly enough, so whatever.
He made his way to the elevator, pleasantly surprised by the refreshing citrus fragrance that wafted through the doors.
The room he entered was not overly spacious, but it felt cozy enough to accommodate two people. There were two bunk beds, with the top one already occupied, a desk, and a decently sized window. Dev settled onto the unclaimed bed, barely having the chance to open his backpack before a knock on the door diverted his attention.
Anxious and excited, the snow leopard placed his hand on the handle, aware that the person on the other side would be his roommate for at least a year. "No need to be nervous," he reassured himself. ‘The brochure specifically mentioned a very LGBT friendly community’. Taking a deep breath, he finally opened the door.
“What up, I’m Jake”, introduced an African wild dog, flashing a broad toothy grin. Without waiting for a response, he confidently entered the room and embraced Dev as if they were old friends.
Dev stood frozen, but did not protest “I’m Dev” he murmured, his gaze fixed straight ahead.
The canine dropped his backpack onto the lower bunk bed and flopped down. "Man, I'm exhausted," he declared, his smile seemingly etched onto his face, infectiously spreading its cheer.
Dev couldn’t help but curve his lips as well “I just got here too”.
“Really? Where from?” Jake inquired while rummaging through his backpack.
“Huntsville” The feline replied, taking a seat on the chair positioned in front of the bed.
“Huntsville?!” Jake perked up, his ears twitching. “No way!”.
“Why? You know someone?” Dev leaned in closer, curious and thrilled that this stranger was familiar with his hometown.
“Never heard of it” The wild dog grinned mischievously.
That cheeky grin was undeniably contagious. Dev rolled his eyes and chuckled. "You got me”.
“I’m from Oak City” Jake shared, reclining on the bed and clasping his hands behind his head.
“Oh, that’s where The Rolling Pebbles are from. They’re my favorite band”.
The wild dog suddenly sat up, accidentally hitting his head in the process. "Ouch!" he exclaimed, laughing as he fell back onto the bed. "Dope, they're my favorite band too!"
"No way!" Dev couldn't contain his excitement. Coming from a small town, this was the first time he had ever had such a connection with a stranger his own age. They continued their conversation about The Rolling Pebbles, discussing their favorite songs, memorable concerts, and trivial facts about the band members. However, the topic shifted when Jake noticed the pride pin on Dev's backpack.
“Is that pin yours?” The wild dog pointed inquisitively.
“Ye-yeah… It was a gift from my sister” The snow leopard tried his best to stay cool.
"But it's yours, right? You're gay?" Jake's question seemed to carry an unexpected weight, making it feel as if he had asked Dev if he were a criminal. The peculiar sensation left Dev feeling irritated with himself for reacting this way, which inadvertently caused him to appear annoyed on the outside. "Yeah, I'm gay," he confirmed.
“Tight” Jake smiled and wouldn’t break eye contact.
“Tight?” Dev was completely caught off guard by that response.
“Yeah, it means cool”, Jake clarified.
“I know what it means” Dev’s heartbeat was racing.

Dev quickly checked his phone, glancing at the email containing his room information to confirm he was in the right place. "Room 308?"
The cat nodded, then turned to the wild dog, who promptly hopped off the bed. "Damn, I thought this was 408," he said with a tinge of disappointment. "Hey Dev, there's a welcome party tonight for all the freshmen. It's at a buddy's frat house. It would be dope if you come."
A whirlwind of emotions swept through Dev's mind. There was undeniably a hint of something more than platonic in Jake's voice. "Y-yeah, I'll go”.
“Awesome! I’ll text you the address!” And with that, what appeared to be his new friend was gone, leaving both felines still taking in what just had happened.

Dev didn't need to check the house numbers; he could already discern which house it was from a block away by the obnoxiously loud music. As he approached, an increasing number of beer cans littered the bushes of neighboring houses. The front door was wide open.
In the midst of the chaos, Jake held a ping pong ball in his hand, poised to throw it. Spotting the snow leopard, he shouted, "Dev!" and launched the ball across the table. It landed flawlessly in a plastic cup, igniting an uproar from the surrounding crowd. The wild dog raised his hands in celebration. "It was you! Your luck!" he exclaimed, pointing at Dev.
Surprised, Dev looked from side to side, uncertain if Jake was addressing him. Having just arrived, the scene was pure havoc. He quickly realized that he was the center of attention for the wild dog and a smile formed on his face. "I didn't know I brought luck."
"I missed five throws in a row, then you walk in and it goes in. I don't need any more evidence," Jake said, grinning and winking as he guided Dev to a plastic table on the verge of collapsing under the weight of countless bottles. "We've got vodka, gin, whiskey, beer, rum, and like six different types of spirits I've never seen before. Whatcha drinking?"
Pretending to survey the assortment, Dev feigned knowledge. "Beer!" he yelled over the blaring music, opting for a lighter choice for now.
Jake grabbed two cans, opening one for himself. Taking a sip, he leaned closer to Dev “Let’s go, you’ll be my new beer pong buddy. Josh can go fuck himself, he didn’t land a single ball”. His free hand suddenly grasped Dev’s, interlacing their fingers. The snow leopard did not protest.
They made their way to the side of the table to wait for their turn. Jake didn’t let go of his hand. It was clear to Dev now, Jake had just made the first move. Attempting to ease the tension in his body only made it more apparent. Countless thoughts raced through his mind, searching for a logical explanation. Clearly, this had to be some sort of mistake. Before he could arrive at a conclusion, it was their turn to play.
The two guys on the other side of the table immediately burst into laughter upon seeing their friend return with a new partner. “Jake replaced his teammate again!” One of them announced between chuckles as they set up the cups.
