“Mom, I’m going to become a plastic surgeon,” those words drifted up from Akane Nagatsuka’s memory. She smiled, saying that had been the starting point for Akane and her mother to begin to repair their long-strained relationship. It had been almost four years since then. Akane went on to become a plastic surgeon and quickly gained a name for being one of the best. She worked under many talented surgeons and learned from them only to go on and improve upon their techniques. She was known as the miracle surgeon, her patients often recovering weeks ahead of others.
Akane saved every cent she earned, with the dream of opening her own clinic in mind. Once her mother heard Akane was trying to build her own clinic, Hibiki insisted Akane move in with her so Akane could save even more money to achieve her dream. As Akane’s name for the most massive implants grew in fame, so too did her bank account. Last year Akane was able to get some interest-free funding from a women's small business.
That funding, along with her sizable nugget of savings. Akane was finally able to break ground at her own clinic. A year later Akane was now standing in front of Dr. Nagatsuka’s Cosmetic Surgery Clinic. After several hours of milling about Akane finally took some time to retreat to her private office for a few moments to decompress. Leaning against her desk with a glass of champagne in hand, she let out a content sigh and smiled “I finally did it,” she said to herself, Taking a sip from her glass, she closed her eyes and peacefully listened to the music still playing out front.
There was a gentle knock at her door. Opening her eyes Akane could see her beautiful mother walking into the room. A familiar voice on the other end said hello “hey Sam it’s me!” Akane said giddily, brushing hair back from her face “that custom order we talked about I need it shipped here yesterday” she said looking up at her mother. Two days passed and the implants were delivered. Akane forbade her mother from seeing them as she wanted Hibiki to be completely surprised when she saw her new size. Akane walked her mother into the operating room holding her hand, then went to clean up and sterilize. Akane thought she was going to be nervous operating on her mother like this. Later that evening Hibiki awoke. Opening her eyes, she was met with a creamy white wall in front of her. Her mind was still foggy from the anesthetic. Hibiki looked around the kitchen trying to think of something to say to Akane when her eyes fell on a postcard Akane had on her fridge. It was from a friend of hers in Japan, Hibiki snapped her fingers “why don’t you open up another clinic?” she said, shaking Akane’s shoulders.
“The same thing would happen if I moved somewhere else in the states' mom,” Akane said through sniffs.
Hibiki pointed to the postcard “then don’t open one in the US baby.”
Akane wiped the tears from her eyes, grabbing a paper towel, she blew her nose, walked over to the postcard and picked it up and flipped it over. It was a message from a fan of her work who had become a friend of Akane’s over the years.
Dear Akane,
I thought it would be fun to send you a postcard instead of our usual emails as a surprise. So, SURPRISE! I hope you like the care package I sent you. Its got some Pocky and other snacks inside, plus a few cute things I brought that I thought you would like. I cannot wait to see you again in person.
