... is the hardest part. I hope Douglas is still with us. And he gets his meds sorted soon.

Matthew Soulanille

I only expect consistency because of the "Schedule: Weekly on Tuesday" post above. I'm also okay with extenuating circumstances if they're communicated (e.g. "sorry, I can't post a chapter this week"—I don't need to know the details). There are ways to emulate consistency, for example, with a buffer, but I recognize that the tier I'm at is paying to skip the buffer. I still want to support Douglas's work, but it sucks to check Patreon and see no new chapter. Since I like reading these weekly, I'll probably just read them on Reddit, but I'll stay subscribed here as long as Reddit / the free tier on Patreon receives weekly chapters.

Lots of people have ADHD and still manage to keep their obligations.

Jouni Osmala

His mentioning of issue of adderall supply means consistency is not reasonable expectation. A more reasonable expectation would be that at random times he just has some solitude and nothing distracting him from writing 3 chapters in a weekend and other times he gets nothing done. ADHD is mistaken as inability to concentrate. But in reality it's inability to regulate concentration and keep distractions away. So when someone with ADHD gets into a groove he may have problems of getting out of it and hyperfocus on it for hours in end and doing something for entire day without realizing time passing. But then again distractions may simply make impossible focus on anything productive at another time. Computer problems he mentioned are one such distraction that may take him out of groove, and that distraction maybe in such a way that he don't even focus solving that issue either but going to a completely tangential issue.

Waiting…

I'm no writer, and if a chapter a week is too much, that's fine, but I'd feel a lot better if that were communicated so I can better choose my preferred membership tier. I really like the story, so I'll probably stick around for another two months (given the holidays) to see if things change, but if not, I'll probably pause my membership and check back in a year. If there's a consistent schedule, even if it's less frequent, I'd be more likely to stick around, although maybe at a lower tier.

Joshua C Hahn

Probably. Mostly my previous comment was trying to bait the simps into attacking so I could troll them and at least get some entertainment from this subscription. But if even the simps have become boring I will almost certainly cancel.

Ddave

Selection bias. Everyone who had an issue with the delays cancelled their membership and left. I'm getting there though...

20 days between releases last time, 16 so far this time but if he publishes before the 18th I will be very surprised. This author's content is good but he is terrible at releasing according to his own schedule. Probably because he has so many simps in his audience. His comments are full of "Don't worry about being late. We understand." And as soon as anyone tries to call the author on not living up to his schedule the simps attack. Just watch what happens to this comment.

Thought platinum is supposed to be 8 chapters ahead ?

Heiko

I was half expecting to see him pull a Krilin force circular saw blade. I see later called it the Destructo Disk. Maybe it had always that name, it's been several decades since I read the Dragon Ball manga. An earthly programmer probably would be familiar with it.

Any word on the next chapter?

Paul Foster

Favorite chapter since mini-Lorvan 😆. I love seeing little glimpses of the personalities of these "stuffy high rankers". Also Carlos getting completely shown up is great in a land of overpowered MCs

John Vistica

Great to see Felton's perspective of our two nobles in action with the runic inscriptions. The six new words were definitely a bonus for him. Hopefully he is sensitive to not let anyone else know where he learned them from. Being able to do their own independent diagnostics and analysis without the armor is a great bonus. When Carlos and Amber are able to dig into the actual sabotaged code, I suspect that there will be traces of an overall control system that invokes the overrides via global parameters. Whether they are able to implement a patch or reset the passcode, we will have to wait and see. Nice to see Trinlen stepping up with the sparring. Great way for Carlos and Amber to learn mage-level fighting. Right now they are effectively unprepared novices but will need to learn to defend themselves fast.

Spells have been likened to mini-soul structures, so i assumed a completed spell is made of essence.

Jouni Osmala

Since some legendary mages can cast with thought alone, according to Amber in one of the early chapters this shows them another good reason to have dedicated soul structure for it. Another advantage of it would be capability of one mind casting while another minds concentrates on observing the environment and another handles the physical body. And another possible advantage is multiple minds preparing spells in the background or casting in the background. And equipment analysis. Multithreading, doesn't need sabotage, just a race condition where system timing causes correct thread to win always to give wrong results for this particular issue. Something along the lines, of anything related to those runes will always be ready before another thread sets a variable to false. And the Carlos could write a fixed version of the spell. Cast it and check the equipment and write the spell down for Felton. And then explaining WHY the original version doesn't work for Felton.

Connor Mcharg

…wait, when Amber was helping Ressara pack up her tent, we got this: “Amber turned back and concentrated 2 minds on trying to mentally incant a pair of Levitate spells to lift the stakes on the far corners of the tent, while her other mind handled physically removing a small pole with her hands. Damn. I can feel the spell activator responding, trying to make the spell come together and take effect, but it's not strong enough. Just doing the final trigger for a spell I prepared beforehand is doable, though.” …but I took that to mean that they could silently activate pre-prepared spells - surely Carlos could do something with that (maybe a sudden levitation up?) Edit - they also may have been able to do some dungeon-style messing with the mana of the silence spell, but I’m pretty sure they’re still trying to keep that a secret.

Sorry Felton saw mana AND ESSENCE move? shouldn't that be aether? Essence is the solid part that is part of the structures. I feel it would be a bigger deal if essence moved.

Douglas Miller

Fixed. Thank you.

David

I've been trying not to make comparisons to DND as I don't know ANYTHING about programming and this story has absolutely subverted my expectations. Realistically do we expect Carlos to break the economy through something like knitting lace like eragorn, building a citadel of a capitol and then imposing his houses will upon unclaimed land, others' lands through trade deals, and then reforming the political system as house Carlos implements a revision upon the magical sytax and system?

Sid_Cypher

Guild secret spell multithreading is funny^^ Silencing the mage is classic, and attacking/protecting the senses (sight/smell) steps towards a security mindset where any and all attack vectors and vulns are considered. Very nice! P.S. Felton's going to be more and more amazed.

rwn

Oh the royal guard armor is gonna end up being a "Reflections on Trusting Trust" thing isn't it?

Tim Judge

yay you're back. Hope the stink doesn't stick to amber. nothing worse than throwing out your favourite shirt cos it CANNOT be cleaned enough.

Paweł P

Do not worry about the delay. And thanks for chapter

Butternut

Small typo: "my knowledge of what it does **it** not precise enough"

Ben Bass

TYFTC! I love casting silence on the space in front of his mouth, works quite nicely in this world. I wonder when Carlos will create macros that will be almost instantly castable, and able to string some complex things together, maybe even silently.

Silence and Darkness, classic DnD anti-caster measures

David

Glad to see you're alive. Hope you are doing as well as you can. These hiccups do not change my support and patronage. I hope you take time as needed. Be well.
