Catherine

Considering what they were told when they became nobles I don’t understand why they would teach Kindar when they know what he’s like. "If you are referring to your soul plan, I must caution you that teaching it to others would be adopting them into your house, and you would be held responsible for their actions." "What about just teaching part of it? Maybe enough for platinum rank? And I have other insights too." "That would be permissible, but any student who adds a ninth structure of their own to the eight learned from your house secrets would found a branch house under yours that you would also be responsible for."

Duck_Giblets

Rumours are like Chinese whispers and the crown will be experts in knowledge gathering and counter espionage. Be amusing to see the houses act on flawed information

TYFTC! So Carlos and Amber now have an intriguing puzzle on their hands. I think with Carlos’ training coupled with Amber’s tenacity as well as including Purple I think they will eventually unlock the tome and its secrets. Not immediatley though, that would be too broken.

Bryan L

I have a feeling that whatever it takes to unlock the book is the actual knowledge, not what's in the book....

Nathan Linder

My guess is the spells at the front are going to be involved in the cipher for whatever cryptography spell Sandaras used was.

Josh

Loving where this is going!

Josh

On the contrary, I think it's entirely in character for Carlos to think things through. And far too few stories show, rather than tell, about characters being diligent and thoughtful and otherwise competent.

Another nice chapter can't wait for next week

Part of me wants him to try cheesing the lock somehow. Perhaps he could make a skeleton key spell, or remake the Knock spell. Perhaps they use the decompiler. Part of me thinks that the reason the first guy failed was because the lock contains all the magic of the book. Like a painting made from all the the words of a script. So dispelling it renders the book blank.

Forint

Here get this What if the chapter started with this: As night fell in the Wilds, Amber stared at the book in her hands, hardly daring to breathe. The title embossed in gold on the front was clear to read: Secrets of Sandaras - Awarded for exceptional merit. Smaller writing in silver lower on the cover declared, "To any thief who steals this book, if you somehow manage to actually extract its secrets, you will have earned them well. Fat chance of that! Seriously, go bother someone else, this is not worth stealing." And automatically, the lock and motivation behind the book(in the title) are both explained without any "telling."

Forint

It really seemed to me like Doug here wanted to explain how such a book could exist and the way he explained everything was too clean. Too logical. That pulled me out. The lock spell, followed by discussion on the key, followed by the independent appraisal. Everything covered and told too efficiently. You could go much faster here by mentioning the independent appraisal, and then skipping to studying the book and explaining the locking mechanism etc while the book is in hand. This would put more of the explanation when the book is being worked on and becomes less tell tell tell. So in short only give us info just as well need it?

BarGamer

I like the exposition.

Monkinto

I meant that more to point out that Carlos and Amber are probably going to actually be the first ones to ever actually unlock it. If I was Sandaras I would have included a function in the lock to notify me if the book was successfully unlocked which could result in some interesting stuff and makes me wonder if Sandaras is still alive as he does appear to be referred to in the present tense.

Connor Mcharg

Well obviously - obfuscation and the equivalent of storing the goods in the base of the locked drawer, rather than in the drawer itself, just seem like basic precautions.

Sid_Cypher

What's the flow? Am I the weird one for appreciating all the details on the book up front (gotta know what WE'RE getting here). I've a suspicion different people have different "flow" stumbles.

Monkinto

Now I’m very curious about what’s going to end up being in the book and I’m betting that neither of the previous books was ever actually unlocked. I can’t wait to find out the reactions of these noble houses when they realize just how screwed they are.

refinery9761

I thought it was fine? It was more exposition for us about sandaras and fits with Carlos working through the justification of actually commiting to it, plus I imagine it will be an important plot device at some point. My only criticism is that I want more faster but that's just me being greedy

Connor Mcharg

That said, Carlos has a good head on his shoulders, and that means taking due diligence when taking such a step, and besides - that information would’ve had to come out at some point anyway, and in my opinion, this is the most realistic time for that.

Andrew Ross

Second!

Forint

Good stuff. In the future you can handwave some stuff. We don't need every single aspect of the book to be explained as logically consistent. For example, we don't need Carlos to question full history of the book and play that conversation out when we know without a shadow of a doubt that he will take the book regardless. It stutters the flow.

Caue f

Woo, first :)
