Pamela Gillespie

Minor quibble re description of princess's clothes. Thigh length leggings is basically tight shorts, is that what you meant?

momonga

My guess is it involves some sort of conspiracy with some nobles tired of being subjugated by the crown.

Jupiter

Thanks for the 1st book! I subscribed to read the ending. Maybe you already answered but will you publish an edited ebook somewhere? will you remove the 1st book from royalroad? Keep the good stuff going!

George

Looking forward to Carlos absolutely blowing his mind with his abilities while he learns from him.

Carl Mason

I would like to see Carlos build a "new" soul plan for him that just scrapes him over the line and leaves him as a very low noble. Who knows what he has to work with, and it would fulfill the request while not placing Kindar in a position to be arrogant toward everyone. Of course, I would also like to see him build the plan and Kindar waste the effort arrogantly by not activating all the synergies.

Carl Mason

The "sleep spell" was enchanted on the box they were being carried in. Once they escaped the box, it would have stopped affecting them.

Matt Null

I can only hope Kindar learns humility and open mindedness under Karlos Tutilage...

Anthony Gerald Miller

I've been waiting about 50 chapters for Trinlen to show up. It's about time! Great entrance line, but we have to wait for Book 2 for him to actually *do* something.

Carl Mason

I am most interested in discovering WHY the armor was tampered with, and on whose orders. And when, is older armor built correctly? Et cetera.

Carl Mason

It is always fun to project potential futures for stories. Especially while geeking out about a quality story.

Carl Mason

For the incantations, you may want to edit the text into a script, so that there is no confusion about what should be said. Maybe it won't be necessary, I don't know.

Irony

The Mercs are most certainly about to die, they know too much about a secret now. Really hope that Carlos doesn’t make that asshole a noble, but I also don’t know if a favor requires him to automatically do it. Super glad to see the teacher, if Carlos takes him into the noble house and shows him the help menu, they’ll change the world. Also glad that Carlos kept the guards, I like those guys. Super excited to see what Carlos‘ second soul structures look like

Carl Mason

Trinlen sure knows how to make an entrance. Also, presumptuous statements, he is also quite skilled at that.

Douglas Miller

That stuff is part of book 2's plot.

AA

What the hell happened with the mercs? Who was behind it? Seriously you just left it all hanging....

Kwame Speller

This book is awesome. I really like the way it is going. Since book 1 completed, I really need an audiobook version with Luke Daniel or Nick Podehl as narrator.

ReadingObsessed

That was pretty darn good. Thinking of doing an epilogue chapter where the princess cleans house a bit?

Elain C. Moria

Ya know... you are evil. Cliff hangers. Book 1, Book 2. Just evil. I want everything three weeks ago dag nabbit. I never realized just how.... stressful, waiting for a new chapter to drop could be. Stress is bad. The causer of stress is bad. ergo.. you must be evil. (nods wisely) I do very much enjoy this story. If you have it in book form, even as say an ebook for kindle, I'd def be very interested in buying the lot. That's how I roll. I don't read one book in a series, I buy the entire set and binge till my eyes bleed. lol Great story. Looking forward to more.

Jake A. Smith

OH SNAP. I had no clue you were actually pursuing an audible edition. Love this news. I can immediately imagine the conversation. “Yeah, so, what I’m gonna need you to do is spend a little bit of time in VS Code, preferably in dark mode, and somehow work out how to vocalize a monospaced font.”

Douglas Miller

It'll probably be a few months. I have to finish editing the book, then the publisher will have to make the audio, and then there's whatever other steps and scheduling delays are involved. Side note, I'm curious what the audiobook narrator will think of the instruction that the snippets of incantations need to have even punctuation be read aloud.

Christian Fagan

I enjoyed this book so far I would like to see the relationship between Amber, Carlos and Purple develop some more. Maybe a possible conflict is the creation/exploration of the dark magic/negative values. A field of magic that while powerful can kill you and wreak havoc on the natural world kind of like radiation or something. Which Amber doesn’t like and Carlos goes ahead and develops it with Purple caught in between? Definitely looking forward to seeing how the house develops and where the story goes from here. Thinking about if the plot line with the plot against the crown in exchange for the crown Jamar betrays the kingdom and joins an empire to be one of their satellite kingdoms would be cool and house Carlos has to basically hard carry the crown would be a cool role reversal. Anyways I’m just rambling as this is all very exciting to think about the possibilities the story could take, a nice steady development arc.

Jake A. Smith

Right?? I died laughing at that ending. Excellent.

Jake A. Smith

Um. Holy hell. I just binged this entire thing in one day, including starting from HFY to signing up for my first-ever Patreon account. This was so goooood!! When does the Audible version come out? I have friends that need the link.

Connor Mcharg

(assuming Trinlen is level 15+) “Here, let me show you how boring things have been for me” *Uses mage sight to see where the Black Blades got them to* *Opens a sight portal underneath them to the centre of the carnage*

Pheonixarcher

i am really curious what the mage will do if Carlos tells him of the bug. Wonder if they can build some kind of work around. Wonder what he can do with the help section

viperfan7

I find it funny how a simple levetation spell is possibly the most dangerous, world ending spell inexistamce because someone forgot to add a "if (Target.G > World.G){ break;}"

viperfan7

"what do you mean all the spells? Like all the stuff taught in the academy, did you get hold of some house secret spells?" "Yes" "Oh, I'm also learning how to manipulate mana like a dungeon core, and I can break magic"

viperfan7

And Trinlen just seems like exactly the kind of person who would get into the BEST shinanigans with the help function. He's gonna be fun to have around lol

viperfan7

Oh shit, I didn't realize that. Holy shit they DID IT

Dan Chadwick

Kindar wants to become a legitimate Noble!!! Trinlen arrives to provide some education... Looks like Carlos has a self paid scribe and some very specific questions for his magic tutor!!!

somebloke

Trinlen has arrived! Better late than never.

Douglas Miller

Second stage happens at level 15 only for orichalcum rank, and the Crown is very well aware of that. So yes, a royal noticing that combination means that the Crown now knows that Carlos and Amber are orichalcum rank.

MindWright

I recognize the iron fist in a velvet glove aspect of their rule. But, in a world where anyone has the potential to manifest exceptional temporal power, bolstering new powers and treating them as potential allies until they prove otherwise: That implies a strong tradition and absence of risk aversion atypical of most fantasy royalty characterization.

Green0Photon

Thank you, I appreciate it 🙏

Douglas Miller

Hmm. Adding "until now" at the end might help. I'll do that.

Connor Mcharg

Working out the level of someone below your own, or not too far above is established to be trivial (assuming you have mana sense, which is generally fairly useful, and could even be a structure added in the second stage or later - and as a member of the only family that is publically known to be orichalcum, it's almost certain she also got to second stage at level 15). As for the fact that they're second stage, that would likely require knowing vaugely how many structures someone had (since having enough synergy to reach second stage at level 15 would leave you with one structure), which assessor Varlinden could tell at a glance back in the cave, or it could be that Carlos's guess about various souls' solidity might be related to their stage is correct, which would make it trivial for someone with the experience and a mana sense.

BerciTheBeast

TFTC!

Markell

I’m gonna go on a wild guess and say that either royalty has access to that information either through their plaque, or that the princess being that powerful and experienced that she knows what to look for.

Markell

Trinlen: "Carlos, there you are! Your weeks of tedious waiting in boredom are over at last, for your teacher Trinlen has arrived!" Carlos: *1000 yard stare into the void as he contemplates the amount of people he has seen getting put into the ground including himself in the last two days alone.*

Melissa Harden

Is second stage at level 15 being remarked upon a point of proof the Royal house & guards know House Carlos' sole plan ranking?

Uroš

"Sorry Trinlen, but I actually don't need you anymore. I've got all the spells now."

Connor Mcharg

Well, why would you differentiate between male and female potential heirs to the position of head of the royal family when the vast majority of a person's power comes from their soul plan and not the frail body they were born with? (especially when that soul plan has been proven to be enough to overpower several other very powerful soul plan holders at once) …also, I presume Amber learnt ’help’ about five minutes after Carlos remembered to send her the definition through Purple's bonds.

Jacob

Trinlen's less important now with the search function, but I'm sure (if Carlos chooses to trust him, which will probably happen soon) that having a mage to guide him through the different spells would be helpful. There's too much data to expect a novice to go through and understand quickly.

ForNatureOfPredatorsStories4837

Honestly, they may all be minor details, but that’s the one of the things I like about this series, almost always when there is translation magic/technology in a story, everything is translated perfectly without error, which even between two languages that originally came from the same language (I mean like with how French and Italian both came from Latin) just would not happen, it’s a minor detail, but I love it

Connor Mcharg

Possibly, but we can't be certain - Carlos released the human tesla coil from the un-lift *after* the sense of wrongness retreated, so it's possible for active spells to continue through the starting of the BSOD, but I don't know if that's because Carlos was concentrating on keeping it active, or because it was bugged, or just because it hadn't been cast using an enchantment (which we know would cause a spell to fail, since they lost their shields).

Orlando Escobales

Yay! Fantastic end to book one, ans I'm exciting for what is coming up next.

viperfan7

I wonder if they'll teach him how to access the magic wikipedia

viperfan7

Fucking hell trinlen is in for a TRIP. Imagine he starts talking about a long lost spell and what it does, and Carlos just goes and "oh hey, you mean this spell" and just casts it. And he just keeps doing that

pukeofhurl

If magic is really programming and he has the list of all inputs and learning keywords is all it takes trial and error while slower would keep his secret alot better

Skylar Ittner

The sleep spells probably fell apart when the magic did a BSOD. Or when the caster was incapacitated/killed, which many of the mercenaries were.

Connor Mcharg

Soooo… What happened to the sleep spells? Do Carlos and Amber still have them hanging out on their imitation soul surfaces? So it seems that either there's a system-wide sabotage of crown guard armour, or there's a viral sabotage (we didn't get to see any scans that didn't involve a suit of armour that had scanned a known sabotaged suit) - I'd recommend Carlos, Ressara, and one of the guards (along with anyone else they deem apropriate) return to the dead zone so that Carlos can go over one of the sabotaged enchantments with a fine toothed comb. Also, I hope Carlos's response to Trinlen's arrival is something along the lines of “Ah! Perfect timing - I could use some help with categorising these spell words I found…” (just to mess with him).

blaze87b

I would imagine it's like discovering the game you just bought has a command console. Sure, you could use it, but you still should have the knowledge of how the game works to use it effectively

Green0Photon

Woo, that's a fun cap off for book 1. Lots of interesting future setup. > Instead, he'd put it out of his mind without even realizing and never thought about it again. Something about this sentence made me misread it first go around, thinking that it was a shitty statement of an omniscient view into the future similar to what bad fanfic authors often do, declaring to the reader that Carlos would never investigate it again. Upon reread, it's obviously not that, and it's him being annoyed that his attention was diverted, learning about that type of ward in the first place. But there's something in the way that it's phrased that had me read it wrong. I don't know if it's worth editing, but I figured I should mention it. I'm so rarely caught off like that in the stupid high amount of reading I do.

Brandon C

Congratulations on finishing your first book! I am looking forward to what you have in store next!

Brandon C

That is interesting that the language doesn’t distinguish between prince or princess. It suggests they are of equivalent status, which is a big deal within royalty and nobility. Also, I wonder how Trenlen will react to the “help” spell. I’m assuming Amber knows the spell by now.

Douglas Miller

"Relative" is right. The Crown will stop being benevolent to you faster than you can blink the instant you try to stop being subordinate to them.

MindWright

Well, that went rather well. One rare aspect of this world is the relative benevolence of the crown. It's an unusual backdrop for this kind of story, and that makes things very intriguing.

pukeofhurl

I wonder if he needs a teacher anymore with !help Thanks for the chapter! Looking forward too book 2.

Kevin Neely

Ha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You have arrived at an unusual time new graduate.

Maurice Brown

Oh this was worth the wait and it’s nice to see someone so powerful that Carlos is just caught flat footed. There’s an old DBZ fanfic where the story is told from Krillin’s point of view. He described that trying to sense Perfect Cell’s power level was actually painful as it was just so far beyond his. That’s the impression I got from this. More… I need more!

Justin Drake

TYFTC

Alistershade

Well worth the wait. Thanks for the chapter!
