OK, so first, read all the cultivation techniques to get a feel for the possibility space. Then try to find a standard of comparison. What makes one cultivation technique better than another? Maybe ask a friendly expert. Then I guess it's experimentation time.

I'm interested what the downsides are to his original cultivation technique. I am guessing there is at least one thing he did wrong, but he could have simply make a top-tier cultivation technique, or maybe he is not yet at the stage where his cultivation technique needs anything more than what he just made. Maybe after he gets to Foundation Establishment, he would need to make meridians in his body, or to get the energy moving through his meridians instead of randomly, maybe also things like using chi you already have in the body, in order to compress more chi to get the right chi compression, because once you got a tiny bit of chi from the next level of compression (aka the next stable configuration or local-minimum-zone) then it becomes much easier to make more. And with his poor talent, I think he would need to use the mental image of particle accelerators, in order to advance past a certain level, but with the advantage of being able to advance to much higher levels than his peers, due to his improved cultivation technique, at least once he improves it like that or in a similar way. Maybe he first needs to make railguns to break through blocked acupuncture points, which would let him unlock more of his meridians, and only after unlocking enough meridians, would he need to make his own pseudo-meridians which to act as particle accelerators, for the purpose of achieving higher compression levels. Though maybe using the mental image of magnetic repelling and attraction could be enough to break through a few levels before that.
