What do you think, author? If you want more ideas, about things MC could do, let me know. Though I cannot afford to pay for the up-to-date chapters, which means the information I can give you is highly limited. But you could ask me how he could try to do certain things, even if you already have your own answers, in case the answers I come up with are somehow useful to the story. Like with the thermometer, a barometer could be made with some airtight material in the form of a hose with outwards flattened ends on both sides, which to be used to connect a metal chamber (with gas inside) with a long exit, with a metal line which to be kept parallel to another line with ruler markings for pressure. The difference in air pressure would cause the leather expansion or contraction of the gas inside the container, with the leather hose inflating or deflating in order to equalize the pressure on both sides of the leather, which would move the needle up or down to reach different pressure ruler markings. For measuring distances, he can use metal with the highest melting point, optionally encased in some other metal and maybe glass on one side, in case it's too brittle on it's own. Speaking of that, if he needs a microscope, he might be able to make one from glass, but getting optically perfect glass might be difficult for him, so he might instead try to work with waterglass (made from lye from wood ash, and beach sand or clear glass made with a recipe which doesn't make it chemically inert), and waterproofed with resin and/or rosin. Or maybe the lens can be made from resin/rosin instead, with the tint being the downside of it's low price. Sure, it might not be that useful for him, but it can be useful for MC's disciples, and for explaining why and how he was able to make the pill by his own, implying some level of luck and/or talent also being involved into replicating the pill(s) so quickly. Optical microscopes, and maybe buying the microscope equivalent for sensing chi or having it custom-made by an artifact refiner, would both make it possible for MC to teach others, and would be a false-herring for why he got so good so quickly, in order to distract attention from his pebble, especially before he can get to storing the pebble inside his soul, or inside his body (a body implant). Of course, there's also the highly unlikely case in which you value my ideas high-enough to give me access to chapters in advance, but I do not expect that to be the case.

At least he brought the metals with him. MC would be smart to make a thermometer, by having a few metal sticks from the metal with the highest melting point, each with two loops, one at each end, one loop used with some rope to make the sticks be like a key chain, and the other loop with a rivet from a metal sample. Maybe also make another, more advanced thermometer. How? Basically, a V made from the lines which both end in a loop and a rivet goes through both of those loops to make an angle. A small distance from that rivet, along the length of the lines, there would be another loop in each of the lines, at equal distances from the rivet. Those loops would have riveted both ends of a small line with two loops, that line with loops being made from a sample metal, so MC only needs to heat the metal in order to see the distance between the two parts of the V. To better calculate the distance, both ends of the I of the V would need a loop, one of them parallel to the V and the other rotated 90 degrees along the axis of the I, the one parallel to the V would have rivetted to it another metal line which would go through the other non-riveted loop. To make it better, instead of a cylindrical line, a flat line would be going through an elongated loop, that flat line having distance markings like a measuring tape/stick, which to be used to more accurately calculate the temperature. Maybe even make it so one side of the sample metal is not rivetted, but simply bent into the other loop, so it can be removed from that loop and both the sample metal and the measuring line can be moved to be more parallel to the two longer lines, for more space-efficient storage. Or maybe only have one thermometer, and have multiple metal samples with curved ends instead of rivets, in order to be able to swap the metal sample (including alloys), and the measuring ruler at the end could have different markings for different metal samples used, but MC would have to make the markings himself. Or maybe have different rulers for different samples, like a key-chain, and just put the ruler of the next metal sample into the elongated loop before you put the metal sample through the normal loops. Having multiple thermometers, one for each metal, would allow more accurate temperature readings, as well as being able to find the common temperatures across the multiple thermometers. That way, if a thermometer gets too close to the melting point of the metal or alloy used for finding the temperature, then it can be swapped with a different one using a metal with a higher melting point.
