Chapter 56 – The Island Awakens
🕑 Added 2025-04-02 09:20:11 +0000 UTCThe campfire crackled, flickering bright orange and red, casting long shadows across the makeshift camp. Jean Grey sat cross-legged near the fire, hugging her arms as the cool sea breeze brushed against her skin.
In her palm, she twirled a small silver cross—a gift from Kurt Wagner before she left. She chuckled softly, shaking her head.
"For luck," Kurt had said. Her fingers tightened around it. She wasn’t religious, but she appreciated the thought. Out here, on this strange island, any luck felt better than none.
Jean glanced toward the forest, brows furrowed. It was unnervingly silent. A normal jungle should be alive with chittering insects, rustling leaves, and the distant hoots of birds. But here? Nothing. No crickets. No night animals. Just the rhythmic crash of the waves against the shore and the flickering of the fire.
She looked up. The clouds above swirled continuously, never dissipating, a strange unnatural rotation centered around the island. It made her feel like they were being watched.
Jean sighed. If their theory was correct, then the force they were dealing with was at least Omega-level. Her fingers idly traced the edge of her cross. "Then again," she thought, "Professor once said that if I could ever fully control my power, I’d qualify as Omega-level too."
She clenched her jaw. The idea of her power scared her more than it reassured her. Then—A surge of energy. A wave of something unseen rolled through the island—raw, pulsing, ancient.
Jean's breath hitched. She felt it. It came from the forest. Her head snapped toward the trees, eyes glowing faintly with psychic energy. Then—"GUYS! We’ve got something!" Her voice cut through the quiet.
Logan, half-asleep and grumbling, jolted awake instantly, his instincts flaring. He reached for his belt, popping his claws on reflex. "Bobby! Get your ass up!" Logan barked.
The rest of the team scrambled awake. Scott adjusted his visor. Alex quickly adjusted his suit. Petra groggily stretched, wiping sleep from her eyes. Bobby was the last to sit up, blinking. "Huh? Wha—?" But there was no time. The moment Bobby reached for his gloves, a distant tremor shook the ground beneath them. Whatever was in the forest… was already awake.
The ground rumbled. Jean’s sharp yell had barely settled when—BOOM!
A jagged rock, the size of a boulder, blasted through the treeline at breakneck speed, its sharp edges glowing faintly as if infused with energy. “Incoming!” Scott roared, snapping his visor into position.
A brilliant red beam—pure concussive force—slammed into the rock, shattering it mid-air into a cascade of rubble. But another shot past his blast radius, screaming toward them. “Shit!”
Before it could crush them, Petra threw out her arms. The earth beneath them buckled in response to her will, surging upward like a protective wall. The jagged rock slammed into her shield, breaking apart in a violent explosion of dust and debris.
“Watch your aim, Summers!” Petra called, shaking out her hands.
“Less complaining, more fighting!” Scott shot back.
Bobby Drake wasted no time. He turned toward the ocean, extending his arms. The sea churned, responding to his power, and in a single motion—He froze an entire section of water. With a sharp exhale, he raised his hands and shattered the frozen seawater into thousands of razor-sharp ice shards.
Then—he launched them. The projectiles whistled through the air, vanishing into the dark forest where the attack had come from. For a moment, the team held their breath. Did they hit the enemy?
Then—A wave of energy crashed down from deep within the island. It wasn’t a physical attack. It was something different than before. Something unnatural.
Scott’s watch flickered, then died. Bobby’s portable scanner shorted out. Jean’s telepathic connection to Xavier vanished. “Shit.” Alex cursed, slapping his now-useless comm unit. Scott tapped his wrist-comm. Nothing. Dead silence. Their connection to the X-Mansion was gone. Scott gritted his teeth. “We’re off-grid now.”
Logan stepped forward, claws out, eyes scanning the dark forest. “Focus on the enemy first. Worry about comms later.”
Then—silence. Petra narrowed her eyes. “They stopped attacking.” The team stayed on edge, weapons raised, waiting for the next move. Then—The ground rumbled again.
Scott barely had time to react before another barrage of jagged rocks shot out of the forest. But this time—They weren’t aimed at them. They were aimed at the Blackbird. “They’re trying to take out the jet!” Scott realized too late.
Petra raised her hands, about to shift the momentum of the attack—But before she could—A towering boulder erupted from the ground directly beneath her. It slammed into her chin, lifting her clean off the ground and knocking her out cold.
“PETRA!” Bobby yelled. Her body fell limply toward the earth—Bobby sprinted forward and caught her before she hit the ground. But the damage was done.
Scott and Alex unleashed their powers in tandem, red and blue energy beams colliding into the incoming rocks—But they were too late.
One massive stone lance ripped through the Blackbird’s hull. Metal screeched. The jet groaned. Then—CRACK. The Blackbird split in half. Their only ticket home was gone. The world fell silent.
The only sounds were the distant waves crashing against the shore and the crackle of the dying campfire. No more rock attacks. No more tremors. Nothing. But no one relaxed.
Bobby knelt next to Petra’s unconscious form, fingers pressing gently against her neck.
Jean hurried to his side. “How is she?”
Bobby let out a breath. “She’s alive, just knocked out. Her pulse is steady, but she took a solid hit. We need to keep an ice compress on her chin.”
“We don’t have time for this!” Alex’s voice was sharp, tension breaking through. “We’re still in combat!”
Bobby snapped his head up, eyes flashing. “And Petra needs us, too! What do you want me to do, leave her in the sand?!”
“Guys…” Jean started, sensing something.
Scott ignored the argument. His body remained tense, muscles coiled, visor locked on the treeline. “We’re boxed in.” His voice was quiet but firm. “No jet. No backup. No way to fall back. We hold this position until Petra wakes up.”
Still—nothing happened. The sea remained calm. The trees stood still. The swirling clouds above the island remained unbroken. “...It stopped?” Alex muttered, scanning the area. Scott’s jaw clenched. “For now.”
A few tense moments passed before her eyes fluttered open. Petra groaned, shifting slightly. Her fingers curled into the sand. Bobby let out a relieved sigh. “Hey, you’re back.”
Jean gently pressed an ice pack to Petra’s chin. Petra winced. “Owww… What the hell happened?” Scott filled her in. When he finished, Petra just stared. “And then it just… stopped?”
Alex crossed his arms. “Yeah. It’s like whoever attacked us got bored or something.”
Jean shook her head, her expression grim. “No. We were being watched the second we stepped on this island. I could feel it. They were waiting for something.”
Bobby raised an eyebrow. “Okay, yeah, that’s creepy. But I just figured it was Logan glaring at me the whole time.” Logan grunted. Bobby smirked. “See?” But the mood stayed heavy.
Alex sighed, rubbing the back of his head. “Alright, but now what? We came here for a rescue mission, and now we’re the ones that need rescuing.”
Scott inhaled deeply, then exhaled. He made his decision. “We go deeper.”
The team turned toward him. Jean frowned. “Scott, are you sure?”
Scott nodded. “We’re stranded, but that doesn’t mean the mission is over. We still don’t know what we’re dealing with. If we can gather intel—figure out who or what is on this island—then when the Professor sends a rescue team, we’ll already have a profile on our enemy.”
A long silence. Then— Bobby exhaled dramatically. “Guess it’s our turn to need saving, huh?” Logan cracked his knuckles. “Not yet, bub.”
…
Flashback several moments before the attack…
A single rowboat drifted to shore, nudged gently by the waves. Jack Hou, clad in his purple and gold robe, grinned as his bare feet finally touched solid ground. He took in a deep breath of the island air, then exhaled with satisfaction.
“Finally! Land!” He turned to his staff—Ruyi Jingu Bang, the mythical weapon of legends—and tapped it lightly against the boat. “We, my dear stick, have discovered a new world.”
His tone was dramatic, his expression full of self-importance. Jack marched forward, striding up the rocky shoreline, and found a large boulder jutting out of the sand. It was the perfect spot. With a flourish, he slammed his foot down on the stone and planted his staff into the earth, striking a grand pose. His purple and gold robe billowed slightly in the ocean breeze.
He tilted his chin up, gazing into the sky with profound self-satisfaction. “From this day forth, let it be known that I, the one and only Jack Hou, have DISCOVERED this island! This hidden land, now claimed in the name of my glorious, handsome self! A new era begins!”
The island itself seemed to react. A strange ripple of energy pulsed outward, unseen but deeply felt. It spread across the land, through the trees, through the waters, and deep into the island’s core.
Something ancient stirred. Something primordial acknowledged his presence.
…
Across the island, Jean Grey’s head snapped up. Her breath hitch. She felt it. It came from the forest. Her head snapped toward the trees, eyes glowing faintly with psychic energy. Then— "GUYS! We’ve got something!"
…
Jack stopped in his tracks, his golden eyes scanning the dense, uncharted island. His lips curled into a smirk as he took in the strange energy coursing through the land, the way the air itself seemed to hum. “Interesting…” he murmured.
He lifted his gaze to the sky, watching the thick, unnatural clouds swirling above the island, a vortex of mist and shadow. Jack’s smirk widened. “So it was you whose energy I felt.”
He tilted his head, as if expecting an answer. The clouds churned—but remained silent. Jack chuckled, tapping his staff against the ground. “Playing mysterious, huh? Alright, don’t answer if you don’t want to. But I wonder… why are you here? Of all places?”
Still, the sky gave no reply. Then—A sudden burst of movement from the forest. Something shot out from the tree line at incredible speed—a thick vine, twisted and gnarled, like a living whip.
Jack’s golden eyes flashed as the vine came straight for him. With a casual flick, he swung his staff.
CRACK!
The Ruyi Jingu Bang met the vine mid-air, splitting it apart with a sharp, clean strike. The vine whipped back, recoiling as if in pain, and then—more came. Dozens. From the forest, an onslaught of twisting vines and roots erupted, each one lashing toward him with unnatural force.
Jack didn’t flinch. Instead—he laughed. A deep, mischievous laugh. “Kekeke… now THAT’S a proper welcome!”
He spun his staff, shifting his stance. Then, with graceful precision, he moved. Jack danced through the attacks, his staff blurring with impossible speed as he deflected, parried, and shattered every incoming strike.
The forest itself was testing him. And Jack Hou? Jack Hou loved a challenge.
