When the last rays of sun are long gone and the fire of the torch is running out the real horror begins. Going down into the cave system there’s a chance that one of the corridors is an entrance to the Underworld.
Losing touch with one realm is really hard to notice, but after a short time, the presence of the living beings in the undead world is noticed by its inhabitants. Twisted spirits are starting to show up - considered unworthy, they travel through their prison after death. Hunted by their own mistakes and fueled by the guilt they will attack everything in their sight.
If anyone in the party has knowledge about other realms, they can recall information about Spirit Warriors - protectors of the gates of Underworld, who might help them get out - of course if they are worth saving.
But by the time they arrive it might be too late, so the intruders have to fight or flight, in most cases they have to do both at the same time.
In the Underworld steel is worthless most of the time, because only few monstrosities have physical form. Most of the creatures here are ghosts, wraiths, all kinds of spirits, that’s why spellcasters and magic weapons come in handy. It’s hard to kill something that is already dead, but it is possible to banish them for long enough to escape.
Remember, the Underworld is a place for people which lead sinful lives and living here is their punishment, but the barrier between worlds is getting thinner during the night. That’s why these ghosts are able to haunt mansions or graveyards after the moon comes out. But maybe if a living being would be able to survive to the nighttime, it will be able to escape?
You can find out in one way! Throw your players to the death dimension with our map of the Underworld Caverns and see who will survive when the night comes.
