The stone-laden walkway stretches before her without a sound. Nor does the wooden picket-fence (in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint) offer any reply. Nor the sweet-scented flowered trees, nor the dusty town road beyond.
Aunt Polly sighs, and turns to go back inside.
When she re-emerges from inside her shady house, she is holding a large, oak-wood spanking paddle.
It's a mean looking thing, with holes drilled in the face so that it can move more swiftly through the air, and a leather loop on the handle so it can hang from a wall.
Aunt Polly doesn't know what Thomasina's done to deserve a paddling today...but with Thomasina, it's always something...
