As the fighting game events approached their climax, the atmosphere inside the arena grew increasingly electric. The energy was at its peak as the finals of the Dead or Alive tournament began—one of the most anticipated matches of the entire ZAGE Fighting Games lineup. Both finalists were from Japan: a skilled player known as KO-Koro and his equally formidable opponent, Akito. KO-Koro chose to fight with Mai Shiranui, while Akito selected Sarah Bryant. The crowd buzzed with excitement, eager to see which of these two fan-favorite characters—and their top-tier players—would come out on top.
The audience grinned and chuckled throughout the match. While both KO-Koro and Akito played seriously and skillfully, there was another element drawing everyone's attention—the over-the-top jiggle physics on display. Yumi Ichijou, trying to keep things professional as the host, said awkwardly, “Whoa! Look at Akito go! His Sarah Bryant moves really gracefully... but, well, I don't think that's the main attraction.” She sighed, clearly flustered, which only made the audience laugh louder.
In the end, it was Akito’s Sarah Bryant who claimed victory, winning the match with solid technique and crowd-pleasing flair.
Up next was the match everyone had been waiting for—the highly anticipated clash between Endo, also known by his e-sports name Hayabusa, and the rising contender Takayuki. This would be the ultimate proving ground. Could Takayuki rise all the way to the top, or would Endo once again defend his crown and remain the champion?
Host Yumi Ichijou’s voice burst with excitement. “Now! The most thrilling match of the entire tournament is here! Will the rise of Takayuki continue? Or will Endo reclaim his usual place at the throne!? Let’s find out!”
Takayuki smiled and approached Endo. “Hope it’s a good match,” he said calmly.
Endo returned the smile with a nod before both players quickly made their way to their respective arcade stations. As expected, Takayuki selected Ken, his go-to fighter. Endo, however, chose his signature character, Chun-Li, without hesitation.
Yumi Ichijou lit up with excitement as she addressed the crowd. “Oh! Hayabusa is taking this seriously! He picked Chun-Li right away!”
Normally, Endo used random characters unless he truly respected his opponent. His instant choice of Chun-Li made it clear—he wasn’t taking Takayuki lightly. The atmosphere thickened with anticipation as both players settled in, ready to clash at full strength.
The first match kicked off with intensity right out of the gate. Takayuki initially read most of Endo’s movements well, using his awareness to control the pace. But Endo, familiar with Takayuki’s reactive style, switched strategies. He began to shift between aggressive bursts and slower, more deceptive plays, making it difficult for Takayuki to keep up.
The adaptation worked. Endo—competing under his e-sports alias Hayabusa—won the first round with a score of 3–1. It wasn’t an easy win, but it was convincing.
“WOAH! Hayabusa takes it!” Yumi Ichijou announced with excitement. “But it wasn’t an easy victory! Can Takayuki come back from this!?”
The next match kicked off—and to everyone’s surprise, Takayuki had completely adapted to Hayabusa’s earlier strategy. The once-chaotic pressure Endo used was no longer catching him off guard. “Chaos!” someone in the crowd shouted, stunned by the sudden shift.
Takayuki played with remarkable calm and precision, reading Endo’s movements with growing confidence. In the end, Takayuki won the match 3–1. Hayabusa was left speechless, clearly shocked at how quickly Takayuki had adapted to his playstyle.
The match continued into the third round, where Takayuki narrowly lost 3–2. Endo had shifted gears dramatically, unleashing a wild and aggressive offense that overwhelmed Takayuki. He pressured with relentless speed, mixing in unpredictable combos and perfectly timed attacks. Takayuki struggled to adapt, and the round slipped through his fingers despite his best efforts.
But in the fourth round, the tables turned again. Takayuki didn’t panic—instead, he studied Endo’s approach. He noticed the shifts in aggression, the subtle habits in Endo’s attacks, and began to anticipate his moves. Bit by bit, Takayuki chipped away at Endo’s pressure, turning the match into a mental chess game. With tight parries, clever spacing, and precise counters, he turned the tide and claimed the round 3–2.
The crowd exploded with cheers. It was as if no one could breathe during those final moments. The battle was dead even, and every exchange felt like a clash between equals. Yumi Ichijou, wide-eyed and smiling, leaned toward the mic and exclaimed, “Hoo! That was insane! What a game! And now—it all comes down to this! The final match! Let’s see how this unfolds!”
Yumi Ichijou said excitedly, her voice almost trembling with anticipation. Endo grit his teeth and muttered to himself, “I need to go into overdrive.”
Summoning every ounce of focus, Endo exploded into action. His gameplay became a whirlwind of raw aggression—unrelenting pressure and rapid inputs that pushed his Chun-Li to her limits. His moves came fast and hard, each one more intense than the last but still Takayuki still able win 2 round against Endo.
Now in Final round Takayuki fought to stay alive, but the momentum was against him. His character’s health bar dropped to a sliver—just one hit left. Meanwhile, Endo’s Chun-Li was still holding strong at mid-health. The crowd was frozen in anticipation, the tension thick in the air as the two players entered what could be the final exchange.
“Oh damn! Will Hayabusa win!?” someone in the crowd shouted as the tension reached its peak. Both players kept their distance, carefully watching for any sudden movement. They were feeling each other out, exchanging quick pokes and feints like two warriors locked in a mental duel.
Suddenly, Takayuki sprang into action, parrying every one of Hayabusa’s moves with razor-sharp precision. The rhythm of the game shifted—Takayuki was reading Endo like an open book. But just as the momentum leaned in Takayuki’s favor, Endo launched Chun-Li’s super move—an overwhelming flurry of kicks and strikes.
With only a sliver of health remaining, Takayuki was a hit away from defeat. The crowd collectively held its breath.
Then, something unbelievable happened.
“Oh my god! Ken—Takayuki—is parrying the entire super attack!” the Yumi screamed.
Strike after strike, Takayuki deflected everything. Each parry was timed to perfection. The audience erupted into gasps and cheers as he danced at the edge of elimination. Endo gritted his teeth and thought, How!?—his ultimate move had just been neutralized.
When Chun-Li’s super finally ended, Takayuki wasted no time. He immediately activated Ken’s Enhanced Super, launching into a brutal sequence. The combo connected cleanly, chaining into a wall-carry and juggling Endo’s Chun-Li midair. The crowd went wild. But Takayuki wasn’t done yet.
With flawless execution, he extended the sequence with a follow-up combo—each hit calculated, each cancel deliberate. The screen flashed. Hayabusa’s health bar evaporated.
And then—it was over.
Hayabusa lost. The impossible had just happened, right in front of a roaring crowd who had witnessed one of the greatest comebacks in arcade history.
Takayuki Roar “YEAHHHH!” and the crowd are roar too they chant his name “TAKAYUKI TAKAYUKI , TAKAYUKI!” Takayuki grinned and bow to audience with full of confidence. And Yumi Ichijou can’t contain her excitement “Whoa Congratulatiosn for Takayuki! the one who beat the "Invicible" Hayabusa! And please welcome our new Champion of Street Fighter 2! Takayuki!” .
Takayuki smile and bow then next are the champion ceremony.
Each champion from the various fighting games received their share of trophies, commemorating their hard-earned victories. In addition to the trophies, they were also awarded the prestigious ZAGE Champion’s Card—a special, limited-edition card that granted them free access to any game from ZAGE one game each. One card was given per game category, making it a prized item among competitors.
What made the card even more special was its design: Zaboru himself had crafted the artwork, personalizing each card with the champion’s photo, their favorite in-game character, and their official e-sports nickname. It was more than just a reward—it was a badge of honor, a token of legacy in the ZAGE competitive scene.
Yumi Ichijou smiled and raised the mic with excitement. “Next! It's time for the ultimate challenge! Are any of you ready to face Zaboru Renkonan himself, as per ZAGE tournament tradition?”
The crowd erupted with cheers, and several champions eagerly stepped forward. Without wasting a moment, the matches against Zaboru began.
One after another, the champions tried their luck—but as expected, Zaboru dominated. With calculated precision and overwhelming skill, he defeated each opponent with ease. It was a showcase of experience and mastery, a reminder of why he stood at the top.
All except one.
When Takayuki stepped up, the atmosphere shifted. The cheers grew quieter, replaced with a sense of anticipation. Unlike the others, Takayuki didn’t falter. He held his ground, reading Zaboru’s movements, and managed to take a round from the undefeated champion.
The crowd erupted. Takayuki had just done what no one else could—he made Zaboru work for it.
"Ooh! Takayuki got a round from Zaboru!" someone shouted, stunned. It meant Takayuki was truly able to hold his own against the legendary Zaboru. Zaboru smirked and thought, "He's really good... Damn, next year there's a chance he might beat me." He chuckled softly, recognizing the potential in Takayuki.
Though the final score ended 3–1 in Zaboru's favor, Takayuki's performance made the match incredibly exciting. He had managed to steal a round from the master, and more impressively, he stayed composed under pressure—calm, precise, and even mimicking Hayabusa’s aggressive style.
Watching from the crowd, Endo—aka Hayabusa—gritted his teeth. "Damn, I can’t believe I lost," he muttered, but then cracked a grin. "There’s always next time."
With that, Endo quietly left the ZEB arena.
After the award ceremony, the lights dimmed, and the crowd was treated to a live concert by Z&Z, the band formed by Zaboru and Zankoku Band. It was the perfect send-off to an unforgettable day.
And with that, the ZAGE Fighting Game Tournament 1996 officially came to a close.

Next ZAGE tournament: Teams of 5 on the same game or a team of 5 but with each player playing a different game. This would be a good way to introduce the concept of an e-sport team.
