You're right when you say that Tyrion's injury isn't so bad. In the books, on the other hand, it was much worse. His entire nose was cut off, leaving him badly disfigured. Also, milk of the poppy is basically opium (which is made from poppies), so it's used to treat pain but of course you can also overdose on it and/or become addicted.
