The part where Wilhelm says Subaru abandons the path of becoming stronger was because in the scene earlier Subaru implies that he wants something bad to happen so he can solve it by abusing return by death and win Emilia's trust back. That's also why he says "it's not my fault" when discovering Ram's body. Be careful what you wish for I guess. 😂

Subaru staying stuff about Emilia needing him isn't because he actually believes that, it's because he's so insecure about his powerlessness that he's trying to compensate in any way possible
