Now that I think of it, the author might be saying Ippo is a panda following those animals brought up. Both are looking serene and friendly, but also fierce and insanely strong when it comes to a fight.

IMO, as much as i like Miyata and understand is Ippo's main rival. I feel like Sendo is Ippo's true rival. Their chemistry is unmatched, and they really be beating the living hell out of another.
