Gabriel is no soldier. He's a messenger. So when he goes to attack Aziraphale it's understandable to heaven that he keeps missing. But what heaven doesn't notice is the message, burned into the ground by his seemingly random strikes. "They have her. Please help." Aziraphale is both a soldier and an avid reader. He does notice.
