Okay, so to clear up Matt’s backstory. Isaac’s father was the coach of the swim team. After they won a championship, Mr. Lahey brought the team back to his house and let them drink illegally. Matt went over to see Isaac, and Isaac’s brother threw him into the pool. Everyone there was too drunk so they laughed it off, but Matt can’t swim so he started to drown. From what I understand, he did not die. He did blackout because he nearly died, but Mr. Lahey saved him before he drowned. He forced Matt to keep the whole incident quiet since he let the students drink. Matt saw Mr. Lahey at Kate’s funeral and wanted him dead. That was the first night Jackson turned into the Kanima, so he answered Matt’s call. After that, he bonded with Matt because he seeks a master. There isn’t really a deeper reason than that for their connection. So Matt used the Kanima to get revenge on the students at that party who let him drown.

He drowned and then I think they gave him CPR to bring him back
