Also, you state this is a veteran soldier, and how he was ‘far to used to hearing ’, yet the thoughts of this character directly following don’t *feel* like someone who is a veteran. “Not a single one of them seemed affected by the cold—an effect of the chants or some skill, no doubt” I would think a veteran of so many years would have a good idea what is causing this, right? And even if they don’t, this could be phrased as a ‘theory’ he has as to why they don’t get cold. I think it’s little things like this that would really sell this new character

I have mixed feelings about this chapter. Love the concept, but you really laid into the ‘idiotic king’ sentiment. I get that your trying to justify the characters feelings about desertion, but its not very interesting when every interaction feels is one sided. I don’t like the ‘idiotic villain’ trope. It feels like a cop-out. I haven’t mentioned anything so far, I do really enjoy the story, but I feel you should lean more into other traits of the king. You’ve shown before that he doesn’t care about his people, and cares for his own pleasure and rest. An apathetic villain who willingly neglects but is still intelligent is much more interesting to read than an apathetic idiot, and makes for much more interesting conflict! Maybe you could introduce more of the royal court..? Some other third party that has been keeping the kingdom together? Maybe the king is obsessed with fighting the orcs (you’ve mentioned this before) and is driven to near madness sustaining this war? Just seeing a little more reason behind the king beyond ‘stupid king who knows nothing makes stupid decisions?’ I think I particularly took point with this chapter because it’s shown that these soldiers have basically no resources, yet previously this war is used as a justification for why there are no young men / laborers, and where all the governor are strained for resources. Like, you don’t have to siphon those resources off for his luxury bathhouse because he’s an idiot, you can justify the slowing trickle of supplies by simply saying their overextended, the war is unsustainable, ect. I do think it would be interesting to see more moral dilemma with Devin too. The duke conflict was better & felt more natural, I just don’t think the same approach works for the soldier. Lean into the bitterness from being left to die, show, not tell, the story of this tired veteran who just wants to go home. the chapter doesn’t feel very compelling at the moment, but I think this chapter has the potential to be incredible, and I would love to see this character become r
