The Reason

She had barely spoken since the school called about the fight. About how he had slammed another boy into the lockers so hard they cracked. About how he had stared, cold and empty, as the kid cried for help.
His mother watched him drink the milk. He didn’t even notice the taste.
The next morning, it was a smoothie. Thick, purple, with a strange aftertaste that lingered past breakfast. He drank it again. Every day, a new version. She never said anything. She didn’t threaten him, didn’t scold him. She just kept feeding him like he was some project she was recalibrating, not her son.
At first, nothing changed. He still felt anger simmering below his skin, still snapped at people when they got too close. But slowly, the rage softened. It didn’t vanish, it dulled, like the edge of a blade forgotten in a drawer. His outbursts became less frequent, and he started sleeping through the night. He attributed it to her silence, to the calm in the house. He thought maybe he was finally maturing.
He didn’t connect the changes at first.
Only later, weeks in, did he start to notice the way his shirts clung differently across his chest. Or how his voice, once coarse and breaking, now climbed higher in pitch when he laughed. One night in the bathroom, brushing his teeth, he ran a hand along the curve of his shoulder and realized it had changed, subtly, but unmistakably. He lingered in front of the mirror a few seconds too long, trying to map what else might have shifted.
He didn’t mention it. Not to her. Not to anyone.
By the third month, something inside him was starting to reshape itself, not just on the surface. When he walked down the halls at school, he no longer led with his shoulders, no longer stared others down. He started shrinking from loud noise, catching himself before a reaction could rise. Emotions came more easily, grief during a movie, guilt after interrupting someone, even something close to compassion.
He hated it at first.
But not enough to stop.
Even as he noticed the soreness in his chest, even as his waist began to narrow and his skin became impossibly soft, he said nothing. He no longer needed to be told to drink the smoothie. It became part of the routine, something as natural as breathing.
Then, one morning, it wasn’t there.
He came down, expecting the usual glass, but the counter was clean. She sipped her coffee, glanced at him, said nothing.
He waited. Nothing came.
The next day was the same. And the next.
When he finally asked, all she said was, “You’re fine now.”
He wasn’t.
In the absence of whatever she had been feeding him, his body revolted. His emotions returned, jagged and unpredictable. His skin itched. His chest hurt in a different way, like something was being pulled out. His voice dropped half an octave overnight and the weight of it felt unbearable.
He started sweating through his sheets. Crying in secret. He missed the stillness he’d grown used to, the softness. Not just in body, but in being. That strange serenity, like he was someone worth being.
When he tried to recreate the shakes himself, it didn’t work. He raided the bathroom, searched her locked drawers, watched YouTube videos late into the night, trying to figure out what she had done to him.
Eventually, he found the name. And then the pills.
He wasn’t even nervous when he took the first one. Just desperate. The effects were slower now, less dramatic, but he felt them. That warmth again. That lightness, that dissolution of the part of him that once broke a boy’s nose without blinking.
What began as a daily need became something more. He no longer tried to "recover" from it. He leaned in. Let the voice get softer, the shape of his body adjust day by day. He began to choose clothes differently. His hair grew longer. His body changed, this time by choice.
At first, he told himself it was temporary. He’d stop after a few weeks. But the weeks turned into months, and he found he didn’t want to stop. He couldn’t. Every time he skipped a day, something inside recoiled. The old Julian returned, and he hated that person. The one who felt heavy and full of rage. This new shape, this new softness, it felt more like home than anything ever had.
His mother never asked. She must have noticed, but she never said a word.
He grew older. Changed jobs often. Changed circles. Changed pronouns. The old world receded like fog behind him. He built a new one.
By the time he was twenty-four, he no longer needed to be reminded or punished or tricked. He sought it himself. Not out of rebellion. Not out of guilt.
He wanted it. Craved it. Needed it like air.
His chest was full now. Hips wider. Waist tapered. His voice was smooth and quiet. Strangers saw a woman and moved on. No one questioned what had once been there.
He still looked in the mirror some mornings and tried to recall who he had been. Sometimes, he missed the ignorance. The before.
But more often, he was grateful.
Not to her.
Not for the method.
But for the fact that something irreversible had started.
And by the time he could name it, it was too late to undo.
