Taking the risk - ep9
🕑 Added 2025-06-10 18:22:12 +0000 UTCINT. ANA'S HOUSE - KITCHEN - MORNING - ONE WEEK AFTER MARCUS'S DEPARTURE
Ana stands at the counter, methodically preparing breakfast with scientific precision. She measures coffee grounds exactly, times her eggs to the second, and arranges everything with mathematical symmetry on her plate.
From the basement, sounds of gentle experimentation drift up - Dimitri tinkering with equipment.
Ana calls down the stairs.
ANA
"Breakfast!"
DIMITRI (O.S.)
"Five more minutes!"
Ana shakes her head with fond exasperation and sits down to eat alone, reading dimensional theory papers while she chews.
**INT. BASEMENT LAB - CONTINUOUS**
Dimitri works at a modified sewing machine, carefully hemming a jumpsuit. Echo, now noticeably larger than a normal kitten should be after just one week, sits on the workbench watching with intense golden eyes.
The jumpsuit Dimitri's working on has been extensively altered - taken in at the waist, adjusted for her new proportions, with subtle decorative stitching that serves both function and form.
DIMITRI
*(to Echo)*
"What do you think? Too much?"
Echo tilts her oversized head and makes a soft chirping sound - not quite a meow.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
"You're right. Function over form."
But she adds one more decorative element anyway - a small geometric pattern that catches the light.
ANA (O.S.)
*(calling from upstairs)*
"Dimitri! Breakfast is getting cold!"
DIMITRI
*(to Echo)*
"Come on, fluffball. Time to eat."
Echo bounds down from the workbench with surprising grace for her size and follows Dimitri upstairs.
**INT. ANA'S HOUSE - KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS**
Dimitri enters wearing the modified jumpsuit, which fits her perfectly and actually looks stylish despite being work clothing. Echo trots beside her, now clearly the size of a young adult cat despite being only a week old.
ANA
*(looking up from her papers)*
"That's new."
DIMITRI
*(self-consciously)*
"I modified it. The standard cut doesn't work anymore."
ANA
"It looks good. Really good."
Ana's scientific mind kicks in as she watches Echo jump onto a chair with fluid motion.
ANA (CONT'D)
"Has Echo always been that big?"
DIMITRI
*(preparing her breakfast with artistic arrangement)*
"She's been growing fast. Interdimensional cat, maybe different growth rate?"
Ana observes Echo more carefully. The cat is not only larger but more proportioned than any week-old kitten should be. Her fur has developed complex patterns, and her eyes seem more intelligent.
ANA
"Dimitri, that's not normal growth. That's accelerated development."
DIMITRI
*(adding garnish to her eggs)*
"She seems healthy. Happy."
Echo purrs loudly, as if agreeing.
MONTAGE - DAILY LIFE THROUGHOUT THE WEEK
- Ana organizing her lab equipment with obsessive precision while Dimitri works more intuitively, following creative instincts
- Dimitri sketching clothing modifications in a notebook, showing surprising artistic talent. She designs functional wear with aesthetic flourishes.
- Ana reading multiple books simultaneously, cross-referencing theories with color-coded tabs and notes
- Dimitri teaching Echo tricks, the cat learning with uncanny intelligence. Echo can already open doors and seems to understand complex commands.
- Ana timing everything she does - shower length (exactly 8 minutes), coffee brewing (4 minutes 30 seconds), even her reading sessions (45-minute intervals with 15-minute breaks)
- Dimitri experimenting with different fabric combinations, creating what could only be called functional art. Her workspace becomes increasingly organized and aesthetically pleasing.
- Ana meal-prepping with scientific efficiency, portioning everything into labeled containers
- Dimitri browsing fashion websites during breaks, taking notes on current trends and adapting them for practical wear
INT. ANA'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - LATE AFTERNOON
Ana sits cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by printouts and equations, working on dimensional calculations with intense focus. Her workspace is pristine chaos - everything has a specific place and purpose.
Dimitri lounges in an armchair she's draped with a beautiful fabric she's been working with, hand-sewing intricate details onto another modified outfit. Echo has grown even larger and now takes up a significant portion of Dimitri's lap.
ANA
*(not looking up from her work)*
"Your stitching is getting really precise."
DIMITRI
*(concentrated on a particularly delicate seam)*
"It's just practical modifications."
ANA
*(glancing over)*
"That embroidery is not practical. That's art."
Dimitri pauses her work, looking at the intricate pattern she's been creating almost unconsciously.
DIMITRI
"I guess... I like making things beautiful while they work well."
ANA
"Nothing wrong with that. I just never knew you were artistic."
DIMITRI
(thoughtful)
"Neither did I. It's like these hands know what to do now."
She flexes her fingers, still somewhat unfamiliar with their new proportions.
Echo suddenly sits up alert in Dimitri's lap, her ears perked and golden eyes fixed on something neither human can see. Her fur begins to shimmer with an otherworldly quality.
ANA
*(setting down her papers)*
"What's she looking at?"
DIMITRI
(concerned, stroking Echo's back)
"Echo? What's wrong, sweetie?"
Echo turns to look directly at Dimitri with intense, almost human-like focus. The shimmer in her fur grows brighter.
ECHO
(in a small, clear voice)
"Time to come home, Dimitri."
Both women freeze. Ana's equations scatter as she scrambles backward.
ANA
"Did she just..."
Before Ana can finish, Echo leaps from Dimitri's lap directly toward her chest. But instead of a normal cat pounce, Echo dissolves into brilliant light mid-air, the radiance flowing into Dimitri's body like liquid sunshine.
DIMITRI
(screaming)
"Ana! What's happening?!"
The light is so intense both women are temporarily blinded. Ana fumbles across the floor, trying to reach Dimitri through the afterglow, hearing her friend's panicked breathing and small sounds of distress.
ANA
"I'm here! I'm right here! Can you see anything?"
DIMITRI
(voice strained)
"No! Everything's white! Ana, where's Echo? Where did she go?"
Ana's vision returns first, blinking away spots of light. What she sees makes her breath catch in her throat.
Dimitri sits on the floor exactly where she was, but she's been transformed. Delicate, furry cat ears protrude from her dark hair, twitching nervously. A long, fluffy tail emerges from the base of her spine, curled around her body defensively. When she speaks, small fangs are visible, and her eyes now have vertical pupils surrounded by Echo's distinctive golden irises.
ANA
(barely a whisper)
"Oh my god."
DIMITRI
(blinking rapidly)
"What? Ana, what's wrong? I can see again but everything looks... different. Sharper."
Ana scrambles to get a hand mirror from the side table, her hands shaking.
ANA
"Dimitri, I need you to stay very calm, okay?"
DIMITRI
(panic creeping into her voice)
"Why would you say that? What happened to me? Where's Echo?"
Ana kneels beside her friend and holds the mirror up with trembling hands.
ANA
"Just... just look."
Dimitri sees her reflection - unmistakably her own face, but with soft cat ears, golden eyes with vertical pupils, and delicate fangs visible as her mouth drops open in shock.
Her new ears flatten against her head as she faints, collapsing backward onto the scattered papers.
INT. ANA'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - LATER THAT EVENING
Dimitri wakes up on the couch, Ana sitting beside her with a cool cloth and a glass of water. Dimitri's new tail is draped over the arm of the couch, twitching unconsciously as she regains consciousness.
DIMITRI
(groggily)
"Please tell me I had the weirdest nightmare..."
ANA
(gently)
"Your ears just perked up when you heard my voice."
Dimitri sits up slowly, raising a tentative hand to touch the soft fur of her new ears. They flick reflexively at her touch, and she can feel the sensation clearly.
DIMITRI
"This is really happening."
ANA
"Echo... she merged with you somehow. Became part of you."
DIMITRI
(examining her tail with fascination and horror)
"She what? How is that even possible?"
ANA
"I think she was never just a regular cat. Marcus said she'd been with him for fifteen years across multiple dimensions. Maybe she was some kind of interdimensional entity."
Dimitri stands carefully, still adjusting to her new appendages, and moves to the full-length mirror by the door. Her reflection shows all the changes clearly - but somehow, they seem to suit her naturally, as if they'd always belonged.
DIMITRI
(staring at herself)
"I look..."
ANA
"Terrifying? Impossible?"
DIMITRI
(tilting her head, ears moving expressively)
"...actually kind of cute."
Despite the impossible situation, Ana can't help but laugh.
ANA
"Only you would be worried about aesthetics right now."
Dimitri's ears perk up at the sound of Ana's laughter - an involuntary response that makes both women pause.
DIMITRI
"I can't control them. They just... react."
ANA
"What else feels different?"
Dimitri closes her eyes, concentrating.
DIMITRI
"Everything's louder. I can hear the neighbor's TV three houses down. And I can smell... everything. Your shampoo, the coffee from this morning, something cooking two blocks away."
She opens her eyes, pupils dilating in the lamplight.
ANA
"Enhanced senses. Anything else?"
Dimitri flexes her hands, testing her reflexes, then looks at Ana with a mixture of resignation and unexpected acceptance.
DIMITRI
"My balance feels perfect. And these fangs... they're actually pretty elegant."
She runs her tongue over them experimentally.
Ana stares at her friend in amazement.
ANA
"You're taking this remarkably well."
DIMITRI
(touching her ears again, watching them move in the mirror)
"After everything else that's happened to me? At least this time the transformation is... well, Echo always did have excellent taste."
She pauses, a more serious thought occurring to her.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
"Do you think this is permanent?"
ANA
"I honestly don't know, Dimitri..."
DIMITRI
(tail swishing nervously)
"Yeah?"
ANA
"We'll figure it out. Whatever Echo was, whatever this means, we'll understand it. We always do."
Dimitri's tail settles as she considers this, and despite everything, she smiles - revealing her small fangs in a way that's more endearing than frightening.
DIMITRI
"Well, at least I'll look stylish while we work on it."
She strikes a small pose in front of the mirror, and her new features somehow make her look more confident, more complete.
Ana shakes her head, grinning at her friend's incredible resilience.
ANA
"Only you, Dimitri. Only you could turn interdimensional body horror into a fashion statement."
DIMITRI
(ears perking up playfully)
"It's a gift."
