“Well, there goes my perfect day. It was good while it lasted,” she sighed as the elevator dinged and the doors slid open to the 66th floor. “Ugh, whatever. I don’t think she can fire me anyway… Luke won’t let her,” she added with a slight pout as she stepped out and made her way toward the changing room.
“Hey Peggy,” Penny called out casually when she spotted the tall, broad-shouldered woman seated on a bench, intently staring at something on her phone. Penny briefly considered jokingly calling her Captain Carter, with a salute. But the last thing she wanted was for today’s training session to become a punishment.
“Penny.” Peggy looked up, her brown eyes unusually intense. “Have you seen this?”
“Seen what?” Penny asked, brows rising as she stepped closer.
“This video,” Peggy replied, extending the phone further with a grave look.
Seeing her so unusually grave, Penny took the phone cautiously, sat in front of her, and pressed play.
The video had no sound. Shaky footage, likely taken from a phone, captured a street from above, most likely a balcony. It was nighttime and it was lit only by the flicker of flames. A line of shops burned as a crowd hurled flaming bottles into windows. The quality was grainy, but it didn’t matter. The faces caught in the flickering firelight were clear enough—some twisted in fury, others grinning in unhinged joy.
Penny gasped, hand flying to her mouth. “How horrible…”
The fire spread rapidly, illuminating the street like daylight as storefront after storefront crumbled under the heat. The video ended just as the last window exploded in a shower of embers.
“So I take it you haven’t seen this,” Peggy said, her tone returning to its usual composed calm, but her posture remained tense—arms crossed, foot tapping.
“N-no, I haven’t…” Penny stammered, eyes still locked on the darkened screen. She handed the phone back hesitantly. “Is this from last night’s Hell’s Kitchen attack? I saw something on the morning news but nothing like that.” Her brows furrowed. “Where did you even find this?”
“It was on a video-sharing site,” Peggy replied seriously. “Though it has been taken down now. People in the comments were saying it wouldn’t stay up long, so I downloaded it to my phone just in case.”
Penny exhaled slowly, still shaken. “Yeah… this is way too brutal for public viewing.”
“Penny, yesterday you mentioned those machines Lucas owns—the ones orbiting the Earth,” Peggy said, her tone serious.
“Oh, you mean the micro-satellites?” Penny blinked, confused for a moment. “They’re more the company’s property than his personal project, I think,” she added quickly. The project was still confidential—she had only found out through MJ and confirmed it via D.A.I.S.Y.
“Yes, satellites.” Peggy gave a short nod. “You said they could locate anyone in the world, as long as you had a photo of them. Was that true?”
Penny’s eyes widened, her posture stiffening as if she'd just been jolted. “Wait… you’re not seriously thinking of using that video to track those people, are you?”
Peggy met her gaze steadily. “Yes. People in the comments were saying this kind of violence has been getting worse for months, and the police still haven’t caught anyone. This could actually help them.”
Penny leaned forward, voice dropping to a frantic whisper as her eyes darted around the room. “N-no, Peggy, you can’t! That’s incredibly illegal!”
“But it would help bring them to justice—and maybe stop these attacks from continuing. Isn't that worth it?” Peggy said, frustration sharpening her voice. “If Lucas has this kind of technology, these machines, shouldn’t he use them to protect people?”
“T-that’s not what the micro-satellites were designed for,” Penny said, rubbing her temples. “They are most likely meant for scientific research… and maybe to find Toni Stark, but even that’s unofficial.” She sighed, sinking slightly into her seat. “Neither Lucas nor the company is responsible for tracking criminals.”
“And if he did use that tech? He would be the one getting hauled in—for illegal surveillance, for violating privacy laws, for misusing restricted systems.”
Peggy stared at her, mouth parting slightly in disbelief. “That’s… that’s absurd.”
“Yeah, well… that’s the law,” Penny replied with a wry chuckle. “But I can send the video to Aunt May. I am sure the Watson Aid group can atleast help some of the poor shop owners who have lost everything.”
Peggy was quiet for a long moment, then slowly set her phone aside. Her brows were drawn together in thought, hands clasped tightly in her lap.
"Penny… even I know that, this... is the Information Age," she said quietly. "And the one who controls the most information... holds the most power." She looked up, her eyes sharp. "You told me about the advanced AI thing—how it can filter and analyze all the data from those satellites. That means Lucas has access to the most accurate, up-to-date intelligence in the world."
She leaned forward slightly, voice low and intense. “So doesn’t that make him… the most powerful person on Earth?”
Penny hesitated, not answering.
“Shouldn’t someone with that kind of power do something good with it?” Peggy asked, her voice rising slightly. “All that technology, all that potential—surely it comes with a duty. A responsibility to use it for more than just research. To help. To protect people.”
She met Penny’s eyes, her own full of fire. “If you had that kind of power, would you just sit on it?”
“B-but I’m sure even governments have their own satellites and advanced AIs hidden away,” Penny said with a wry smile. “They could do this themselves if they wanted to.”
“Then why aren’t they?” Peggy asked, pointing to the video still on her phone.
“I don’t know... maybe they’re waiting to catch a bigger fish,” Penny offered, trying to sound confident. Truthfully, she wasn’t sure if governments even had tech on par with the Watson Group—she was just assuming based on what Lucas had already built.
“That is horse shit,” Peggy snapped, her voice rising sharply. The sudden force in her tone made Penny flinch.
“Look, I may not know everything about this modern world,” Peggy continued, her voice firm and her hand clenched into a fist. “But I do know this: the greater the power you hold, the greater your responsibility. And if everyone keeps shirking theirs, then innocent people will keep suffering.”
Penny stared at her, stunned. “You... you sound like a real superhero right now,” she said softly, a small smile forming on her lips as her chest tightened with admiration.
“Superhero, huh?” Peggy gave a half-smile, then looked down at her own hands. After a beat, she looked back at Penny with serious eyes. “Tell me something, Penny—if you had powers, real superpowers… what would you do with them?”
“Me?” Penny blinked, startled, and pointed to herself. “What would I do if I had powers?”
Peggy nodded solemnly.
“Well…” Penny laughed nervously. “I would probably make some crazy videos and get super famous.”
“Well, getting famous isn’t necessarily a bad thing,” Peggy chuckled with her. “But what else?”
Penny fell quiet for a moment, then looked down, her tone softening. “...I think I would try to help people.”
She hesitated before continuing, voice tinged with emotion. “You know my Aunt May? She is the head of the Watson Aid Network. She has helped so many people. Even before all that, she used to volunteer at a soup kitchen downtown. There were always people there who needed help… and she taught me that the world only gets better when we choose to be kind.”
She swallowed and looked at the floor, her voice barely above a whisper. “My parents… they were kind people too. That’s what Aunt May always says.”
A soft smile spread across her face as she looked back up at Peggy. “So yeah. If I had powers, I would definitely help people. There are so many out there who aren’t as lucky. And I think… it would make my parents—and Aunt May—proud.”
“That’s truly wonderful, love,” Peggy said with a warm smile, her posture straightening as she patted her shoulders lightly with shining eyes. “Yes… people who have power do have a duty to help others,” she added, her smile radiant.
“...So does this mean a very old superhero is making a comeback?” Penny asked teasingly, looking at her curiously.
“Who knows?... Maybe... I still need to have a talk with someone,” Peggy replied with a mysterious smile. “Come on now, let’s get changed,” she added cheerfully as she stood up.
Penny nodded with a grin as well.
After changing, the two of them stepped out of the locker room.
“You know, that line—‘with great power comes great responsibility’—we should slap that on a T-shirt. I bet it would sell tons,” Penny said with a mischievous grin as they walked side by side.
“Do people actually wear shirts with things written on them?” Peggy asked, raising a skeptical eyebrow.
“Oh yeah, all the time. We could even throw a shield design on the back just to make sure it sells,” Penny said with a wink.
“Haha, let’s just focus on exercising for now,” Peggy said, brushing the topic off with a chuckle.
“Sigh… alright,” Penny said with a dramatic groan.
