a friend of mine visited last week and we played around with some various flavors of chemistry and electricity, which included some pyrotechnic removal of invasive shrubs

Just potassium perchlorate and aluminum. For "small" bangs like this I typically never deviate from this formula since it is very stable for how strong it is. However if I'm going for light generation, I use other formulas.
