Reminds me of when my EE brother-in-law was close to getting shocked by 230V mains from an open outlet while helping me renovate my apartment. He was lucky that the "fuse" blew. Later we found out the previous resident had decided to save some 10cnt and had replaced with a a piece of wire. I would have expected something like that in a 3rd world country but not here in Finland!.

For real. I remember my uncle remodeling a few years ago and he found extension cords running through the studs instead of romex.

Are you running new romex or just gonna clean up what you got? That looks like a nightmare, almost seems better to start with new from the panel. Who knows what other splices may be hiding in the walls.
