VR for laser goggles??
🕑 Added 2021-06-07 00:25:21 +0000 UTCAs you know, eye protection is an absolute necessity when working with powerful lasers. Laser goggles are nice, but have a couple drawbacks. For one, laser goggles only work for a limited range of wavelengths, which means you need multiple pairs of goggles for different laser colors. Another drawback is that it's hard to see the actual laser output through goggles because they filter out the light (as they should!)
A possible all in one solution would be something like a VR headset with a camera in front to isolate the viewer's eyeballs from the laser beams. Now I know practically nothing about VR, but I'd imagine there is something out there that should be easy to modify for this kind of use. Something with adjustable camera settings and low display lag would be ideal, but that isn't necessary as I'm just looking to make a proof of concept more than anything. I'd like to include a project like this as part of a vid on laser safety, as well as maybe strap a huge laser to the goggles for funsies. :D
Does anybody have recommendations for VR headsets/platforms for me? Let me know!

An oculus quest will give you a "pass through" option. Another way would be use the FPV drone goggles with the camera on the headset instead of the drone. Many different routes you could take

It doesn't have to be VR, you could just put a camera and a screen in front of your eyes. So if you took like a welding mask and put a phone in place of the visor and then sealed all the cracks I don't see why that wouldn't work

I would use a vuze 3d stereoscopic camera. They cam do live stream of 3D stereoscopic content. Hook camera up to PC via high quality USB cable with PC connected to 5ghz or wifi 6 network. Set up stream on camera (which you could record as well, btw). Get oculus quest 2 and set up air-link or virtual desktop with PC. Connect to stream with oculus quest. Several advantages. Can set up 3D camera in static position above work bench, 3D is a little wonky because your hands are not where you think they would be, but it is high quality video. Could also do a mount with one of those vuze stereoscopic cameras to front if you want a complete pass through situation. But, the videos of doing cool laser stuff in 3D would be awesome too.

Goggles for sport drone racing are intense but low resolution at 600x800. They get up to 1280 at their best. It's all going to be about resolution. Best bang for your buck right now is the Oculus with 1832 x 1920 per eye. That's pretty darn good for $300. I despise the fact you must register a Facebook account with it. Who knows what information they are gleaning, probably what makes them so cheap.

Depends on how much detail you want, you could probably pretty easily use a google cardboard or daydream as a test, though for full-credit you could pick up an oculus quest for amazingly cheap (compared to competition) with no annoying lighthouses and decent tracking, plus one remote per hand if you care

Take a look at the goggles and cameras used for drone racing. They're already designed for low latency and wide FOV, so all you need to do is cut out the VTX-VRX part. Beware that a lot of the racing goggles like the fatsharks have a pretty small virtual picture (I believe this can be an advantage for racing). Whereas the cheaper box goggles often have a bigger virtual screen. I have the eachines "goggles 2" and they're great, I don't know if they're made any more though.

For proof of concept i’ve used google cardboard to look at 50 mW lasers. HTC hive is your best bet. I had this very idea but my poor software skills prevented me to execute on it.

Your best bet might be the Occulus Quest. It supports a feature called passthrough [0] where it just shows you your IRL surroundings rather than the video game, can be enabled manually. Because it's made by facebook they require you to link it to a facebook account to use it which is kinda dumb, but if you're okay with that at $300 it's a solid option. I've got an HTC Vive, which is pretty good. The passthrough camera is nothing to write home about, but it does work. I've heard good things about the oculus rift (I think that's the one...) It's got a much better camera and uses a few cameras for tracking. I think..
