In this clip, a threaded galvanized steel rod heats so quickly that the zinc boils off faster than it can burn in air. There was an initial peak current of 30kA, ending around 10kA when the rod finally exploded 0.2 seconds later.
This is lightning levels of current!

it's very hard to get around this but thankfully it isn't really a problem either. it's the initial small area of contact and oxide layer burning off, which allows a better connection to hold immediately after

yeah it's DC. i have a couple silly AC/induction experiments in the video. later on I might build a huge inverter for the bank in order to run enormous tesla coils and plasma devices from them

Just when I was starting to wonder what forces would prompt it specifically to explode and bend instead of melt or merrily continue to blackbody away, in comes the explanation about the flash-boiling zinc. Finally an actual reason to say "come back, zinc!"

What an awesome sequence of events!!! That was very different than what I was expecting. Was that initial shower of sparks at each end by design or does that represent a bad connection somewhere or some other unnecessary losses?

quite a few since there is quite a bit of capacity to this bank. i just trickle charge them with a lab supply when i'm not blowing stuff up with them
